Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the tolerant and susceptible soybean genotypes to drought stress. Twenty two genotypes were tested on three levels of drought stress, based on soil moisture conditions: 80% of field capacity (FC ), 60% FC and 40% FC. The experiment was conducted in plastic house at the experimental field of Meteorological Station, Sampali, Medan, from February to May 2000. The results show that increasing on the severity of drought caused significantly reduced growth and yields, which indicated by the reduction on shoot dry weight, stem diameter, filled pod number, seed number/plant and seed dry weight. The level of growth and yield reductions varied 1 among genotypes. The highest variation was shown at the drought level of 60% FC. Sindoro and Lokon were selected as tolerant and susceptible genotypes, consecutively. It was concluded that the adaptation of tolerant plants strongly related to their ability to improve the root system and to reduce the transpiration surfaces. Abstract

Potatoes can be severely affected by late blight, a fungal disease caused by Phvtophthora infestans. which can destroy the foliage and tubers of the crop. Initial attempts to control late blight in potato deployed resistance genes (R genes) derived from the hexaploid Solanum demissum (RI - Rll). However, their immunity reaction can be easily overcome by the development of new virulent factors. It is currently accepted that the most effective solution against late blight involve the use offield-resistant varieties as part of an integrated pest management strategy. Field resistance to Phvtophthora i!!festans were examined in a diploid segregating potato population. The population produced crosses between Solanum microdontum genotype (MCDI67) and ~ tuberosum genotype (SH2988) have been assessed for resistance to f.. infestans (late blight) in the field and prol1ed to segregate for f.. infestans resistance. A genetic linkage map of this population was constructed by using PCR-based CAPS markers. The result showed that one QTL on foliage resistance to late blight were linked with marker GP 180 on chromosome 4 of potato in coupling phase. Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the effect of volume and source of growth media and lettuce growth and yield in Deep Pool Growing System (DPGS). The study was conducted from September to December 2003 at Deep Pool Growing System facility, Danasworo Hydro - Garden Ciapus, Bogor. The Study was arranged in randomized completely block design with two factors. First factor was volume of growth media ( 20 cm³ and 110 cm³). The second factor was source of growth media (synthetic foam, cocodust, rice-husk + OSF and rice-husk + cocodust). Medium volume of  20 cm³ with rockwool was used as a check. Nutrient compotion of the solution was as follows (ppm): Ca 117, Mg 24, K 210, NH4 25, NO3 233, SO4 113, and PO4 60, Fe 2.14, B 1.2, Zn 0.26, Cu 0.048, Mn 0.18, and Mo 0.046. Medium volume of 20 cm³ with synthetic foam obtained the best yield for all parameters. Therefore, this treatment could replace rockwool as medium for lettuce production in DPGS.   Key words : Deep Pool Growing System, hydroponics, growth medium

Abstract

Two parallel experiments were conducted to study the effect of training and pruning on the growth and development of durian. Two-years old durian clones Matahari and Monthong had been pruned and or trained for 19 months as open center, central leader, palmette leader and left untreated (control treatment) in five (for Matahari) and six (for Monthong) replications.             Training and pruning treatments resulted in more open crown as indicated by lower (35 - 40%) leaf area index, better growth analysis as indicated by better dry matter partition and growth rate. Relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) of trained and pruned trees were high during 12 - 15 months after treatment, although their absolute growth rate cumulative crown dry matter low compared to untreated trees. Compared to pruning \, training treatment gave higher contribution to NAR.             Due to wet climate of  local Bogor and ontogeny of the durian used in this experiment (at late juvenile stage, 3.5 year old durian), the effect of training and pruning on the development of the durian as observed by flushing phenology had not been revealed. Flushing rhythmic pattern of treated and untreated durian were almost same.   Key words: durian, tree architecture, training, pruning, phenology.

Abstract

The experiment was aimed to study the quality and shelflife of Fremont fruit harvested from different land elevation. Fruit were harvested according to orchard harvest criteria. The experiment used Randomized Complete Design, with the treatment of land elevation level i.e. 500 - 600 m, 600 - 700 m, 700 - 800 m above sea level. Land elevation level influence peel color, at the higher land elevation level the orange color on peel was more appeared. Land elevation level in the range of 500 - 800 m above sea level did nor affect firmness and total soluble solids  (TSS) content in fruit juice at harvest time, however there was a tendency that higher acid and vitamin C content were observed in fruit of tree grown in the higher land elevation. The decrease on weight of fruit, fruit firmness, acid and vitamin C contents and increase of TSS content were observed during storage. The fruit of Fremont not be stored more than four weeks, because in this experiment, the fruit at four week after harvest experienced significant weight loss and severe peel shrinkage they resulted in unmarketable fruit.

Abstract

The need to produce numerous and good quality plantlet in short time has been carried out with in vitro culture. The objective of this research was to study BAP and sucrose effect on the in vitro multiplication of small ginger. Research was done in Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory, Department of Agronomy. Bogor Agricultural University from November 2002 until August 2003. The treatment used BAP 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ppm and sucrose 20, 30, 40, 50 g/l. The result showed that sucrose significantly influenced shoot number in 2-5 and 8 Week After Planting (WAP) and leaf number in 2-7 WAP; root length, root number and explant fresh weight. BAP only significantly influenced leaf number in 7 WAP and root quality. With time shoot color changed from green to yellow. Higher RAP and sucrose concentration increased micro rhizome percentage. Sucrose 40 g/l or RAP 2 ppm gave numerous shoot and high explant fresh weight. Key words : Zingiber officinale Rosc var. amarun, In vitro, BAP, Sucrose

Abstract

Gynura procumbens (Back) has been used for traditional medical treatment in Indonesia. Micropropagation. one of propagation methods, becomes an effective method in propagating the G. p.rocumbens (Back). The in vitro research using The group Randomize Block Design was conducted to study the growth and development of G. procumbens (Back) explant by applying combinations of BAP ( 0, /,2, and 3 ppm) and IAA (0, 0.5, and / ppm) in the Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. The results showed combination of BAP 3 ppm and IAA 0.5 ppm was the optimum combination for the shoot multiplication, which produced 85.4 shoots per bottle. BAP 3 ppm combined with / ppm of lAA resulted in 100 % callussed culture with the largest diameter. Key words: Gynura u.rocumbens (Back), BAP, IAA, in Vitro
