Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' interests in towards courses at English Department of Universitas Prima Indonesia in Medan. This qualitative study uses a case study design involving 60 students in the 5th semester of the Academic Year 2018 as participants. Data are obtained through questionnaires and interviews, thus the results showed that students have higher interests in the courses of teaching and education than other variety of courses taught in the English Department. The second interest was found in language skill courses. The reasons were to determine their future goals as teachers as well as the major program decision. Students argued that the majors they chose were following their interests, but some students were still unsure about the majors and interests they had chosen. This study suggests that lecturers should motivate the students to strengthen their competences particularly to identify the students’ interests in teaching or any other goals.

Abstract

This paper intends to provide details with regard to the forms, structures and positions of vocatives prevalently utilized by writers to address former President Ferdinand E. Marcos in news articles of the three leading Philippine newspapers (Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, and Manila Bulletin). A total of 90 news article samples were collected and pragmatically analyzed to answer the research questions at hand. Results revealed that Filipino news article writers favored the use of single- word and phrase forms of vocatives. As regards the vocatives structures, one – word noun (N) structure , Adj. + N + N, Det + Adj. + N, and Det + N phrasal structures are predominant in the top three dailies. Also, medial is the most preferred vocative position followed by initial then final position. Since vocatives have pragmatic implications, the employment of address forms (e.g. dictator, strongman, the author of Martial Law, and tyrant) to refer to Marcos suggests negativity as these terms indicate inappropriateness in the context of use. Consequently, it can be inferred that while writers’ presentation of Marcos in their articles exhibits fairness, there is a general lack of sensitivity and awareness regarding the suitable usage of some vocatives in Philippine culture.

Abstract

The study at hands is a cross-cultural exploration of request strategies in Kuwaiti Arabic and British English dialects. A mixed method approach of a qualitative and quantitative analysis was used (i.e., a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and semi-structured interviews). Data was collected from a total of five hundred participants, two hundred and fifty from each group. Sixty participants were chosen for the semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the collected data was based upon Brown and Levinson's (1987) social variables (e.g., power, distance, and ranking). Also, the data was analyzed following Blum-Kulka and Olshtain's (1984) Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP). The results of the study revealed that Kuwaiti Arabic and British English participants used the conventional indirect level in the form of query preparatory in most situations. Furthermore, power as a social variable affected Kuwaiti Arabic and British English participants’ flow of a request in conversations. Participants used direct request strategies when the power of the speaker was high. As for the semi-structured interviews, the results indicated that there is a sociocultural norm between the Kuwaiti society and the British society, which affected their use of requests.

Abstract

The preparation of teaching and learning resources in environment education (EE) is important because it supports the attainment of the goals of RA 9512 and addresses the lack of teaching and learning resources in EE (Kimaryo, 2011). Using mixed methods of research, the study aimed to review the English Education curriculum to identify entry points of EE integration using the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) EE materials, and to develop and to validate exemplar session plans with EE integration in different English Education courses. Data were gathered using documentary analysis, assessment of the DENR EE materials, and assessment of the proposed session plans using rubric. Results show that the entry points for EE integration is adequate, and that the DENR EE materials are found to be appropriate, relevant, and highly flexible as instructional materials for EE integration in English courses. EE can be integrated in the different parts of the lesson such as the motivation, lesson proper and assessment. The proposed session plans were rated excellent by the jurors, and therefore serve as acceptable and relevant materials for the mainstreaming of EE in the English Education curriculum. Wide dissemination and pilot-testing of the session plans integrating EE are recommended.

Abstract

This paper discusses Sufism reasoning in Islamic education which is based on the meaning of ihsan as the basis for character building, referring to the Al-Quran as the main source of guidance for Muslims. Sophistication of ihsan as an approach, presupposes a close relationship between the heart and psychology. Through the intellectual approach, it can develop personality, and mental health that can increase piety, laughter, sincerity, gratitude, and other good deeds. This literature study confirms that ihsan as an educational approach is not only based on rewards and punishments, but rather based everything. His activities on love and affection. Although ihsan is understood as a means of getting closer to God in the world of Sufism, but to some degree ihsan can be a practical approach in the world. Character education. Here Ihsan can become a model of Islamic psychotherapy useful for preventation, curation, and mental rehabilitation, such as stress, traumatic, psychosis, psychoneurosis, frustration, and depression with love as the main foundation. Educators must instill an understanding of love and love to students through an ihsan approach, because without it, no matter how sophisticated the educational approach is. Used unsuccessfully. Therefore, ihsan can be one of the approaches in character education that teaches learners about love and love. A perspective that sits love as a symbol of communication and interaction between each other.
