This article examines the relations between Mālik schools and Andalusian scholars, the development of ḥadīth riwāyah and its relation with the social and cultural conditions in al-Andalus. Andalusian scholars, being influenced by views of Mālik b. Anas and his schools, made some tolerant standard for ḥadīth transmission. They did not make differences in narrative symbols and its hierarchy, except within the scope of the method. The validity of hadith is not solely determined by the strict criteria and subjective narrative, but also by the society and how they understand the narrative. There were social and cultural power relations with ḥadīth knowledge in al-Andalus that were influenced by critical and relative epistemology. Studies of hadith in al-Andalus focused more on the study of comprehension and meaning (sharh) of ḥadīth, which give practical benefit and applicable knowledge to the society.

The textuality of the Qur'an contains a high quality of literary aspect. Therefore, a literary approach to the Qur’an is one of the ways in the understanding of the meaning and message of it. This approach has been used by modern and contemporary Muslim scholars, and even by western scholars of Qur’an studies. This paper discusses Mustansir Mir’s thought and literary approach to the Qur’an, focusing on the story of Joseph. This study shows that Mir reflects on the nature and power of God and reveals the moral messages in the scene and structured dialogue on the passages in Sūra Yūsuf. It also reveals that Mir’s approach to the story is structural where he elaborates the structure, plot, and scene of the story and connects them with the moral message of the story.

In the Islamic doctrine, Allah is the creator, while the universe including human beings is the creatures. The universe glorifies Allah. Glorification is the proof of the universe’s obedience to Allah. The study aims to shed light on how the universe performs such a glorification. This article examines the concept of tasbīḥ al-‘ālam proposed by Muḥammad bin al-Ḥusayn Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (544 H/1149 AD – 606 H/1209 AD), a rationalist, in his book Tafsīr al-Kabīr aw Mafātiḥ al-Ghayb and compares it with that of Muhyiddin Ibn ‘Arabī ( 560 H/ 1149 AD), a mystical interpreter, in his book Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Karīm. This study shows that there are distinct processes and ways of how the universe commends to God. According to Ibn Arabī, the commendation by the universe is the process of getting annihilation and the unifiction of existence (waḥdah al-wujūd); while al-Rāzī clarifies that the process itself is in metaphoric meaning (majāzi) contingent upon the condition of each part of the universe.

There has been a wide presumption that hadith literature authored by Indonesian Muslim scholars is simple and static. This article challenges this view. It examines Miṣbāḥ al-Ẓulām, a commentary of Bulūg al-Marām, by Muhajirin Amsar al-Dari to show the dynamic development of the study on ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth (disputes over hadith). Grounded in the hermeneutic approach, this article argues that the development of hadith studies in Indonesia from time to time is not as simple as the general presupposition entails. This article shows that the development of hadith studies is raised following the provision of studies on ikhtilāf al-ḥadīth. The tradition of writing hadith in Indonesia began in the 17th century and, as a result, a number of hadith literatures have been produced by Indonesian Muslim scholars. This development challenges some scholars’ perception that the studies of hadith in Indonesia remain simple and the science of hadith in the country is hardly available.

This paper aims to demonstrate how the adoption of the theory of metaphor by Ricoeur to the “Light Verse” in the Quran. One of the most famous verse in the Quran is “the Light verse.” Beside the metaphor of light, the verse includes the metaphors of “the niche”, of “the lamp”, of “the glass”, and others. The metaphor “God is the Light” is the vital feature of the analysis. The next metaphors in the verse are an extension of that metaphor. The “light” metaphor with its principal meaning as “source” will be analyzed using the theory of metaphor as created by Paul Ricoeur in The Rule of Metaphor (1978). The application of this concept will unfold how this metaphor is employed creatively. It makes a parable of the gradation of lights and contains how it is widened to cover a broader aspect of faith, i.e., being the center and open to accept His light. The result of this experiment with metaphors in the Light verse shows fresh analysis that God illuminates on every creation in all realms.

Spiritual tourism is not a new phenomenon. It has been studied from tourism perspectives. However, when the tourism became a global trend of religious expression, the perspective of the sociology of religion get its place. In Indonesia, although Muslims perform hajj, visiting and praying in famous cemeteries (ziyāra), and umrah are also included into this trip. Spiritual tourism at the same time has affected and has been affected by religious views, including the understanding of what is referred to as Sunna. This condition has enfolded how umrah is performed as a social trend today. By looking at the concept of spiritual tourism from sociological perspective, this paper further utilizes umrah and hajj travel agencies’ angle in seeing of what is so called Sunna, and how it has influenced the performance of umrah. The study demonstrates the important role of travel agencies in forming a strategy to attract pilgrims by two steps: by binding umrah as a recreation/travel and placing it as a modern distinctive way of worship.

One example of the living Qur’an and hadith are found in South Borneo. Living Qur’an and hadith refers to various ways in which this scriptures are practiced in Muslim daily live. In South Borneo, this deals with the phenomenon of memorizing the Qur’an as a bride-price (jujuran) for marriage among the Banjarese people. This tradition has been practiced for various reasons. Using phenomenological method, this study records the views of the people peforming this tradition and attempts to explain its practice and meaning. This study reveals that jujuran is an acculturation of the Qur’an with the local tradition. The people believe in the power of the Qur’an and make this to bless their important life cycle, such as marriage. The jujuran reflects various reasons, ranging from groom’s seriousness to memorize the Qur’an and to marry and the best award for brides. However, most do not know the authoritative tradition from the Prophet regarding the bride-price of memorizing the Qur’an but are inspired by popular literature and novel that contain stories of the Qur’an as bride-price.

Muslim feminist hermeneutical methods to the Qur’an is a response to the conservative interpretations which hegemonizes knowledge construction to shape the tradition and the methodology of the patriarchal reading of the texts. This approach demonstrates that the Qur’an is compatible with modernity and supports gender equality. This article explores one of the leading Muslim feminisit scholar, Amina Wadud, and examines her Qur’an feminist hermeneutical method. Amina Wadud is a Muslim feminist who proposes feminist hermeneutical method to interpret the Qur’an which she called ‘tawhidic paradigm.’ This article shows that Wadud’s hermeneutical approach interrogates the patriarchal reading of the Qur’anic verses that privileges one sex over another. According to her, in understanding the Qur’an three principles should be considered, namely: first, the context in which the Qur’an was revealed; second, the grammatical composition of the text; and third, the whole text, that is its weltanschauung or world-view.
