Abstract

The Qur’anic Semantic Analysis of Encyclopedic Model: Critics to Semantic Model of Toshihiko IzutsuThis research attempts to build a new model of semantic analysis to the Qur’anic text, which is called encyclopedic semantics. This research contributes to the improvement of Qur’anic semantic analysis of Izutsu and as an alternative model. This article employs a qualitative method and research and development (R & D) with analytical descriptive to the data gathered. Analysis of the data consist of several steps, namely analyzing Izutsu’s model of Qur’anic semantics, identifying and verifying several limitations on Izutsu’s model, building a new design of Qur’anic semantics to perfection, and lastly, demonstrating the new model in the semantics applied to the Qur’anic text. This research shows that based on the laxity found in Izutsu’s model, this research creates a new model of semantics analysis to the Qur’an called encyclopedic semantics as an alternative model to the existing model from Izutsu. The semantics model of encyclopedic perfects the Izutsu model with significant differences. The semantics model of encyclopedic aims at rendering the meanings of the Qur’an from global to particular.  In contrast, the Izutsu model is to achieve meanings from particular to global. Besides, encyclopedic model of semantics is part of mawdlu’iy (thematic) method of interpreting the Qur’an. This model gains its legitimation from Islamic tradition. The sample of this model is shown in the application of the Qur’anic word maṭar.

Abstract

Asbāb al-nuzūl are socio-historical events surrounding the revelation of the Qur’an and they are important aspects to understand the meaning of the Qur’an. Unfortunately, in many tafsir that written either in classical or modern exegesis many exegetes seem to ignore the important messages of these socio-historical aspects of the Qur’an. Many exegetes only focus on the texts and produce the textual-doctrinal understanding of the Qur’an that detached from its context. This article based on the claim of universality of the messages of the Qur’an to all human beings across time and space. This article employs interpretative-analysis method to analyze the use of Asbāb al-nuzūl in kitab tafsir – classic and modern - and to seek a new understanding in both: the theory a well as the use of Asbāb al-nuzūl for Qur’anic interpretation. This article shows that the study of Asbāb al-nuzūl should be concerned not only with the specific events of the revelations but also with the spirit of the time when the events occurred in order to understand the basic meaning intended by the texts revealed in various occasions. Therefore, the meaning of the Qur'an should be derived not only from the general meaning of the texts but also from the contexts of the revelations (al-ibrat bi umum al-lafzh ma’a mura’at khusus al-sabab). Interpreting the Qur’an by paying attention to socio-historical approach will lead us to a more dynamic and dialogical interpretation with the cultural contexts without ignoring the ethical principles of the Qur’an.

Abstract

Wahyu merupakan suatu perkara yang sangat penting dalam agama Islam bahkan menjadi asas kepada kewujudan Islam itu sendiri. Begitu pula tema wahyu dalam khazanah ‘‘ulūm al-Qur’ān. Oleh sebab itu, berbagai kajian tentang wahyu banyak dilakukan oleh para pemikir Muslim, ia sentiasa dijadikan sasaran musuh Islam untuk melemahkan Islam dan umatnya. Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid adalah satu nama besar dalam dunia Pemikiran Islam yang mencoba menawarkan gagasan baru mengenai wahyu tersebut.Dalam mengkaji tradisi (turath) di bidang pemikiran terutama pada kajian‘ulūm al-Qur’ān, Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid berbeda dengan para pendahulunya. Jika para pendahulunya lebih cendrung mengekor atau taqlīd dengan pemikiran yang sudah ada, justru Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid lebih memilih untuk mengkritisi pemikiran- pemikiran tersebut,. Bahkan lebih jauh lagi Ia  bukan sekedar mengkritisi, tetapi tidak segan-segan untuk menolaknya. Sikap kritis Abu Zaid diwujudkan dengan menggiring, ‘‘ulūm al-Qur’ān sebagaii objek kajiannya menuju taraf ilmiah rasional. Karena kajian ini  masih dianggap jalan di tempat, yakni masih berada pada wilayah teologis-mitologis. Sehingga belum ada upaya-upaya untuk menuju ke taraf yang lebih tinggi, yaitu taraf ilmiah-rasional.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pandangan Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid tentang wahyu. Metode yang digunakan dalam penulisan adalah deskriptif analisis. langkah awal yang ditempuh adalah dengan mengumpulkan data-data primer dan sekunder kemudian mengklasifikasikan, mendeskripsikan dan selanjutnya menganalisis.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa Abu Zaid mengkaji wahyu dengan analisis unsur budaya sehingga yang membedakannya dengan penafsir lainnya adalah antara wahyu dan budaya,. budaya-sosial sangat berperan dan berpengaruh penting terhadap munculnya sebuah teks. Abu Zaid menjelaskan proses  pewahyuan Alquran dengan meminjam teori model komunikasi Roman Jakobson, meskipun tidak sama persis.“Proses pewahyuan menurutnya adalah sebuah tindak komunikasi yang secara natural terdiri dari pembicara, yaitu Allah, seorang penerima, yakni Nabi Muhammad, sebuah kode komunikasi, yakni bahasa Arab, dan sebuah canel, yakni Ruh Suci (Jibril). Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid juga dipengaruhi oleh Toshihiko Izutsu, dan  al-Jurjani.

Abstract

AbstrakTulisan ini berusaha untuk menelusuri kembali seperti apa sejarah penurunan Alquranuntuk mengetahui bagaimana pesan-pesan Alquran tersebut mampu membangun tatanan sosial baru berdasarkan petunjuk Alquran. Tulisan ini dilandaskan  pada  kenyataan  bahwa  Alquran  diturunkan  secara  berangsur-angsur  selama  ±23  tahun  kepada masyarakat  Arab  pada  waktu  itu,  mengomentari  keadaan  dan  peristiwa-peristiwa  yang  mereka  alami  bahkan menjawab  pertanyaan-pertanyaan  dan  permasalahan  yang  mereka  hadapi.  Banyak  di  antara  pesan-pesan  Alquran bersifat bantahan yang nyata atas norma-norma sosial yang diberlakukan masyarakat Jahiliyyah. Isi Alquran bukan hanya  mereformasi  tatanan  masyarakat  yang  ada  tetapi  bahkan  merevolusi  konsep-konsep  yang  sudah  baku  dan menggantinya  dengan  konsep  baru  yang  mencerahkan  dan  membebaskan.  Tulisan  ini  diharapkan  dapat mengembalikan kita pada pemahaman menyeluruh tentang makna dasar Islam datang dan mampu secara lebih bijak memahami kondisi masyarakat modern dengan berkaca pada tujuan penurunan Alquran bagi kehidupan umat Islam.

Abstract

Muslim feminist hermeneutical methods to the Qur’an is a response to the conservative interpretations which hegemonizes knowledge construction to shape the tradition and the methodology of the patriarchal reading of the texts. This approach demonstrates that the Qur’an is compatible with modernity and supports gender equality. This article explores one of the leading Muslim feminisit scholar, Amina Wadud, and examines her Qur’an feminist hermeneutical method. Amina Wadud is a Muslim feminist who proposes feminist hermeneutical method to interpret the Qur’an which she called ‘tawhidic paradigm.’ This article shows that Wadud’s hermeneutical approach interrogates the patriarchal reading of the Qur’anic verses that privileges one sex over another. According to her, in understanding the Qur’an three principles should be considered, namely: first, the context in which the Qur’an was revealed; second, the grammatical composition of the text; and third, the whole text, that is its weltanschauung or world-view.

Abstract

This paper examines the sexual agency exercised by married Muslim women in Bandung, Indonesia, in their marital relationships. Dominant discourses teach that women should obey their husbands, and most women believe that they should serve their husbands sexually whenever required. Sex is a taboo subject and women should not discuss sex or initiate sex. Their sexual desire is not acknowledged. However, in-depth interviews with 42 married women, and some husbands, found that a few exceptional women managed to challenge or negotiate around these dominant discourses. The paper examines their exercise of agency with regard to the initiation of sex, positions and practices that they prefer, their ability to say no to sex, ways to avoid having sex and their demand for mutual pleasure in sex.

Abstract

Qur’anic Interpretation in Indonesia has been long interconnected with the tradition in the Middle East, especially in Haramayn and Egypt. Many Indonesians studied many Islamic disciplines from prominent ulama in these regions. One of them is Mahmud Yunus, who studied at Al-Azhar University, Cairo. He was influenced by the prominent ulama of Al- Azhar, i.e., M. Abduh. Abduh is famous for his thought of Islamic revivalism. This research investigates the possible influence of Abduh’s reformation thought to Mahmud Yunus Qur’anic interpretation, which called tafsir Qur’an Karim. This research employs a qualitative method with a historical approach and content analysis to analyze the data. This research shows that Mahmud Yunus is influenced significantly by Abduh’s reformation thought and can be seen from Yunus’ interpretation in his tafsir. The influence includes combating blind taqlid (unquestioning acceptance of religious thoughts), rationalizing the ‘mythical’ understanding of the Qur’anic texts, and emphasizing the belief that the Qur’an is compatible with science and the changing social reality. Kajian tafsir di Indonesia memiliki keterkaitan yang erat dengan pemikiran tafsir di Timur Tengah. Hal ini dapat dipahami karena banyak ulama Indonesia belajar di sana terutama Haramayn dan Mesir. Salah satu ulama yang memiliki keterpengaruhan tersebut adalah Mahmud Yunus yang sempat belajar di Al-Azhar, Kairo, Mesir. Secara spesifik, Yunus banyak mengadopsi pemikiran pembaharuan dari tokohpembaharu Mesir yakni M. Abduh. Penelitian ini bermaksud menelusuri keterpengaruhan pemikiran pembaharuan Mahmud Yunus dalam karya Tafsirnya Qur’an Karim dari pemikiran pembaharuan M. Abduh. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan menggali kajian pustakaatas naskah tafsir Mahmud Yunus dan Al-Manar dengan menggunakan analisi isi dan historis. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh pembaharuan Abduh terlihat dalam penafsiran yang dilakukan oleh Mahmud Yunus dalam Tafsirnya berkaitan dengan beberapa aspek diantaranya adalah: penolakan atas taqlid, bid’ah dan khurafat, rasionalitas atas beberapa pemahaman yang bersifat mitis dan kesesuaian antara al-Qur’an dengan perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan perkembangan masyarakat.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss mental health from the perspective of religious psychology. This research method is qualitative through literature study with a religious psychology approach. The results of the discussion of this study include the notion of mental health, mental health criteria, religious psychology, and mental health from the perspective of religious psychology. From this analysis, it can be concluded that the tendency for mental health relations in the psychology of religion originates largely from ancient times. Religion can have a significant impact on human life, including health. Because people who have good health will always feel safe and feel happy under any circumstances, so people in good health will always introspect on all the conditions they do in order to control and control themselves.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to discuss the hadith of the Prophet about garlic. This research method is qualitative through the approach of takhrij and sharah hadith with chemical analysis. The result and discussion of this study is the health benefits of garlic according to a scientific perspective. The conclusion of this research is takhrij and syarah hadith of the Prophet about the permissibility of eating garlic which is also beneficial for health from a scientific perspective.

Abstract

Translating the Qur’an into other languages is an urgent task following the spread of Islam not only to Arabic-speaking countries but also all over the world including Indonesia. The purpose of this article is to examine the process of the Qur’anic translation in the Sundanese Qur’anic translation and tafsir. This article investigates various preferred words choices by ulama in four Sundanese Translation and Tafsir namely: Qur’an Miwah Terjemah Dina Basa Sunda (QMTDBS, hereafter) published by the team members of West Java Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2005; 2) Tafsir Al Qur’an Basa Sunda (TQBS, hereafter), also published by West Java Ministry of Religious Affairs in 1981, 3) Tafsir Ayat Suci Lenyepaneun (TASL, hereafter); and 4) Roudhatul Irfan (RI, hereafter) written by K.H. Ahmad Sanoesi. Special attention is directed to investigating three aspects namely: 1) The procedure of using plural forms; 2) The usage of language levels; and 3) The preference of word choices for the translation of the same Arabic word. This research employs a qualitative method with content analysis of the text of Sundanese tafsir from different eras to accommodate the use of the Sundanese language in the changing society. The philological analysis also utilizes to scrutinize different word–by–word translations in these three texts. This research shows that: (1) There are differences in using plural forms from the source language into the targeted language in these Sundanese tafsir. For QMTDBS, they mostly eschewed the plural structure systematized in the Sundanese language. To our analysis, the shifting usage of the first aspect (1-plural) related to formulating the simple translation (uncomplicated) by eliminating one of the plural forms. The second aspect (2- language level) from coarse/refined to more refine language is associated with the changing society in Sundanese. The Qur’an which is positioned as sacred text represented high society and therefore uses more refined language. The third category (3) of various dictions usage is connected to territorial and context conventions which certainly influence the meaning-making of the translation process. Some Sundanese-translated words may not represent the equivalent meaning of the source language and it becomes one of the limitations in the translation process.
