Abstract

Libraries play a strategic role in improving the quality of education by providing informative and relevant collections. Collection development policies are essential, particularly for academic libraries that support theses and research conducted by the academic community. This study employs a literature review method, referencing various sources such as scientific books, journal articles, research reports, and regulations in both printed and electronic formats. Additionally, the study compares two journal articles discussing collection development policies in academic libraries in Africa, namely the Imo State Academic Library and the Tanzanian Academic Library. The findings indicate that both libraries have implemented collection development policies, including selection, acquisition, user studies, preservation, weeding, evaluation, and collaboration. However, the involvement of users in the selection process of library materials remains limited. Therefore, this study recommends increased user involvement in the selection process, the establishment of a Collection Development Department, periodic weeding, and enhanced collaboration among libraries.

Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of the use of information media in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The method used is a qualitative research method with a case study approach accompanied by interviews with random sampling techniques. The information media that became the research material was the information board in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. The Bogor Botanical Gardens are a plant conservation area under the supervision of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Although in its current development the function of the Bogor Botanical Gardens also includes a tourism function. To meet this need, the Bogor Botanical Gardens has prepared information media in the form of an information board that is integrated with the Bogor Botanical Garden's web page. From these developments the author intends to examine the effectiveness of the information media. As a result, there are still many things that must be addressed regarding the information media. Its presence is still considered ineffective for some people because of the difficulty of accessing web pages even though they are already using a QR code. Thus, this is an important note for the Bogor Botanical Gardens manager regarding the effectiveness of using the information media.

Abstract

Social skills are an individual's ability to interact effectively with others in various social situations. These skills encompass how a person communicates, understands, and responds to their needs, emotions, and actions of others in a positive and constructive manner. The purpose of this study was to determine the social skills of librarians at the Library Service Unit of Lancang Kuning University. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the subjects were librarians and library users at the UPT of Lancang Kuning University. The result show that librarians already have good social skills as seen from how librarians respond to librarians who enter wihout following the rules in the library, such as carriying bags into the circulation room, noisy visitors, visitors who bring food and drinks, and users who repeatedly committing mistakes. Furthermore, librarians are willing to listen to users even while engaged in other tasks, addressing their complaints, and understanding their needs. Friendly attitude facilitates effective communication between librarians and the users. Additionally, librarians were capable of delivering verbal statements, such as setting boundaries and actively listening, as well as employing non verbal communication, including facial expressions, hand gestures, vocal intonation, and a professional appearance, to create responsive and communicative interactions.

Abstract

Shelving is a crucial task in library operations, where librarians arrange library materials on shelves systematically based on classification numbers. To optimize space usage, bookshelves are typically designed with multiple levels. This design requires librarians to reach overhead or squat down when accessing items on the topmost or bottommost shelves. Repetitive shelving activities performed over extended periods can lead to fatigue and an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, especially in the upper body. This study aims to assess the working posture of library staff at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, during shelving activities using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) method. The study adopts a qualitative observational approach, with the RULA worksheet serving as the main assessment tool. Findings reveal that five out of six library staff members obtained a RULA score of 7, indicating a very high ergonomic risk. One staff member achieved a lower score due to the use of an assistive device—a small chair—while working. Based on these results, it is recommended that improvements be made to working posture and that ergonomic aids be provided to reduce injury risks and enhance employee comfort during shelving tasks.

Abstract

This study focuses on students’ information literacy skills in completing academic papers. The level of the informants’ abilities has not been comprehensively and in-depth explored, making it necessary to conduct this research. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, aiming to obtain a clear understanding of the informants’ information literacy competencies in preparing paper assignments. The conceptual framework for assessing information literacy skills uses the SCONUL Seven Pillars Information Literacy Research Lens. The informants consist of five students from the Mathematics Education (Tadris) program, class of 2021, at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The results indicate that the informants have not fully mastered information literacy skills. The first informant has not mastered the competencies of managing, gathering, and evaluating information. The second informant has not mastered planning, gathering, evaluating, and managing competencies. The third informant has not mastered scoping, gathering, managing, and evaluating competencies. The fourth informant has not mastered scoping, planning, gathering, and managing competencies. The fifth informant has not mastered scoping, evaluating, and managing competencies. Factors inhibiting the development of information literacy skills include limited participation in completing paper assignments, insufficient availability of library collections, ineffective use of keywords that match information needs which increases search time, and the lack of citation use in paper preparation.
