Abstract

This research investigates the impact of school-based English clubs on language skill development among Indonesian high school students, addressing the educational gap in English proficiency as an impact of globalization. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the study engaged 21 active members of a combined English club at Benteng Rotterdam, Makassar, employing online questionnaires and focus group discussions to gather data on participants' experiences and challenges. Findings reveal that participation in English clubs significantly enhances students' speaking, listening, and reading skills, with 81% of students reporting increased confidence in speaking. However, challenges such as inconsistent program implementation, pronunciation difficulties, and limited vocabulary retention were identified. This study contributes to the understanding of extracurricular language learning by highlighting the effectiveness of English clubs and offering recommendations for improving their implementation. Insights gained from this research can inform educators and policymakers in designing more effective language learning environments that support students’ needs and foster equitable access to language education.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the TikTok application on the motivation and academic achievement level of Generation Z students in higher education. The data in this study was collected quantitatively with a survey involving 40 students from various semesters in the English study program at Tidar University. The results showed that using TikTok helped students in some ways and harmed them in others. In favourable terms, 54. Seventeen per cent agreed 'strongly' with the proposition that 'TikTok is a source to access relevant and interesting information easily', recognizing the truth of digital communication and content that appeals to Generation Z. Some respondents had a negative attitude towards TikTok. Some respondents had a negative attitude towards TikTok, stating that TikTok can make students lose focus and contribute to procrastination, which is a hot issue in the modern world, namely the problem of time management in the educational framework. This study proves that using TikTok creates a dilemma between risks and possibilities for Generation Z students in educational settings. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of using TikTok in learning and teaching, students and educators should better understand the subject matter and find ways to use TikTok effectively to complement the learning process and simultaneously prevent negative implications. These guidelines are necessary to bring out the instructional facilities of TikTok and prevent the disruption of the learning process.

Abstract

This study explores the role of appraisal systems within student-teacher interactions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, focusing on how these linguistic resources shape the educational experience. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, audio recordings, and semi-structured interviews with EFL teachers and students in Majalengka. The analysis, grounded in Systemic Functional Linguistics, identified key patterns in the use of appraisal language, including expressions of attitude, engagement strategies, and graduation. The findings reveal that positive appraisals significantly enhance student engagement and motivation, while the strategic use of engagement and graduation in feedback helps create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Teachers' positive attitudes and validation of students' contributions foster a sense of belonging and confidence among learners. Conversely, negative appraisals, though less frequent, can adversely affect student morale and participation. This research highlights the critical role of nuanced and supportive communication in EFL education. It offers practical insights for educators to refine their interactional strategies, emphasizing the importance of positive reinforcement, inclusive engagement, and calibrated feedback. The study underscores the need for further research to explore appraisal systems in diverse educational settings and their long-term impact on student outcomes. By bridging the gap between linguistic theory and educational practice, this study aims to contribute to the enhancement of pedagogical approaches in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

English has become one of the most important languages in the world. This makes English a competency that is very necessary in today’s global work or educational institutions. However, many of us have limited access to learning and developing our English language skills. Therefore, this paper aims to find out the perceptions of students at one of the Islamic universities in East Java, which requires students to stay at a university boarding school that has an International Day program as a medium for developing students’ English skills which it is also aimed to be the requirements for the students graduation from the university boarding school. To achieve the objectives of this research, interview analysis was used to describe their perceptions regarding the implementation of the program. This research also used a qualitative approach with direct interviews with 5 students from different educational backgrounds. The results of this research figured out that some students only regarded the International Day program as a form of formality for the university boarding school graduation. However, there are also those who use this program as a murajaah for their previous English language skills and as a medium for developing English language skills. Apart from that, this research also highlights the existence of a gap between students’ expectations and reality regarding the implementation of the International Day program, and it was found that there is a quite big gap regarding this. So, it is necessary to evaluate the implementation of the program in terms of intensity, rules, and supervision, as well as additional support for each student, so that students can be more active in carrying out the program. Overall, this research provides insight into the students’ perceptions of English language skills development programs and emphasizes the importance of aligning program implementation with the students’ expectations for better future outcomes.
