Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of reading attitude toward students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau. This research used a quantitative approach by applying ex-post facto method of causal comparative design. The population of this research was all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau with the number was 320 students. The sample of this research was 30 students who were selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and test. The study results showed that the R score was 0.436 categorized in the moderate category. This means that a positive and moderate correlation existed between the reading attitude and the reading understanding of students. Besides, the score of Fcount was 6.559 with the significant value was 0.016. Because the score Fcount was greater than Ftable (4.18) and the score of significance was lower than α (0.05), it meant that null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. So, based on the finding of research and data analysis, it could be concluded that there was significant influence between reading attitude and students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Baubau.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties of eleventh grade students in learning English at SMA Negeri 1 Batauga. The research design uses a mixed-method design, which is used to describe students' difficulties in learning English. The research subjects were 12 students. The place of this research is SMA Negeri 1 Batauga. The research data were collected through test and interview. Data were analyzed based on the type of analysis by Miles and Huberman—data reduction, presentation, and conclusion or verification. Based on the data obtained in the field, especially the results of test and interview, it can be concluded that the level of students’ learning achievement of SMA Negeri 1 Batauga is low. And the factor that affects the difficulty of students in learning English is the motivation or low interest of students in learning English. This is indicated by their indifference or reluctance to learn English. This reluctance has an impact on their mastery of English, especially English vocabulary and grammar as well as their reading and speaking comprehension skills. This is because students of SMA Negeri 1 Batauga rarely repeat English lessons at home and do not memorize English vocabulary gradually. The results of the interview also showed that the students' environment did not have a positive influence on students in learning. That includes English teacher and parental support.

The sources of the data in this research include events, information, and documents. The techniques of collecting data are observation and interview. The data were analyzed through some steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verification. The result shows that the English See subtype verbs identified are see, hear, smell, taste, feel, observe, notice and perceive. While the Wolio See subtype verbs identified are kamata, rango, bou, penami, namisi, and tuminda. In the aspect of meaning, the Wolio See subtype verbs do not always have the same function with English in the use. Some verbs in Wolio language have more wide semantic range, such as ‘kamata’ and ‘namisi’. ‘Kamata’ refers to become aware of somebody/something by using of eyes either in a glance or over period of time and carefully or not. In addition, ‘kamata’ also can be used to see a movie, witness the accident, and observed somebody or something. ‘namisi’ also can cover feel and perceive. Though it is a transitive and intransitive verb at once, but the passive sentence of this verb is not allowed. In addition, this verb also does not have the imperative form when it refers to ‘perceive’. Contrast with ‘tumindaea’ that has more narrow semantic meaning. ‘tumindaea’ is just used to pay attention or notice somebody or his/her speech or advice.
