Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the effect of using anagram game to improve students’ vocabulary mastery at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 4 Baubau. The research used quantitative approach and applied quasi experimental design. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Baubau. The number of population was 185 students. The sample was class XI MIA 5 as the experimental class and class XI MIA 1 as the control class in which the total of both classes was 60 students. The sampling technique in this research was cluster random sampling. The instrument of the research was tests in the form of multiple choices. The data obtained were analized by using SPSS 22.0 program. The result of the research shows that the mean score of experimental class in pre-test is 55.17 and the mean score in pre-test of control class is 47.50, while the mean score of experimental class in post-test is 72.83 and the mean score of control class in post-test is 56.83. The data shows that the mean score of experimental class is higher than the control class. The result of hypotesis testing is found that tcount 57.44 > ttable 2.021 and the probability value (sig.(2-tailed)) 0.000 < 0.05 which means that Ha is accepted and H0 is rejected. Thus, there is a significant effect of using anagram game in improving students’ vocabulary mastery at eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 4 Baubau.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the english teachers strategies to increase the students motivation in learning english. This research used descriptive qualitative research method. Sources of data in this research are the English teacher and the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Lasalimu. Instruments used in this research were observation and interview. In validating the data, the researcher used data source by comparing the result of observation and interview. This research is analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of data analysis including reducing the data, displaying the data and taking conclusion and verification. The result of the research showed that the strategies used by the teacher in motivating students to learn English at the tenth grade of SMA Negeri 2 lasalimu are giving praise, giving suggestion, and playing motivation videos. Because by this technique it can attract the attention of students in teaching, students do not get bored quickly, more enthusiasm in learning English and increase knowledge they have. The strategies to increase motivation given by the English teacher to the students were extrinsic motivation (based on the source of motivation) in teaching English as media to arouse students of reaching the goal.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate See subtype verbs in English and Wolio languages: the meanings and grammatical properties. The research is descriptive qualitative research. The sources of the data in this research include events, information, and documents. The techniques of collecting data are observation and interview. The data were analyzed through some steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion and verification. The result shows that the English See subtype verbs identified are see, hear, smell, taste, feel, observe, notice and perceive. While the Wolio See subtype verbs identified are kamata, rango, bou, penami, namisi, and tuminda. In the aspect of meaning, the Wolio See subtype verbs do not always have the same function with English in the use. Some verbs in Wolio language have more wide semantic range, such as ‘kamata’ and ‘namisi’. ‘Kamata’ refers to become aware of somebody/something by using of eyes either in a glance or over period of time and carefully or not. In addition, ‘kamata’ also can be used to see a movie, witness the accident, and observed somebody or something. ‘namisi’ also can cover feel and perceive. Though it is a transitive and intransitive verb at once, but the passive sentence of this verb is not allowed. In addition, this verb also does not have the imperative form when it refers to ‘perceive’. Contrast with ‘tumindaea’ that has more narrow semantic meaning. ‘tumindaea’ is just used to pay attention or notice somebody or his/her speech or advice.

Abstract

The problem statements of the research were: 1) how is the social context of author reflected in novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett; 2) how is the social life happened in the society reflected in novel The Help; 3) how is the social function of novel The Help. The research used descriptive qualitative method by applying sociology of literature approach. The technique of data collecting used note and read techniques. The results showed that there are some conflicts happened in novel The Help: 1) the context of author explained about how black maid was discriminated against by white people in Mississippi. Many kinds of discrimination towards black maids like quote in the novel said that white people assume that blacks were a disease. One of the losers was black and he became depressed because white behavior was very brutal; 2) the social life reflected in society explained about condition in Jackson, Mississippi when black maids felt uncomfortable and treated unfairly with their social life; 3) social function explained about the role of the government. In this case, the government has failed because indirectly they support white people. In Mississippi they did not have black government because they did not need blacks to participate in politics.

Abstract

The problem statements of this research were: 1) what effect did the instructional design and delivery of English course to the student satisfaction?; 2) what impact did lecturer roles have on the student satisfaction, including feedback and assessment?; 3) what student duties and responsibilities were critical for a pleasant online class experience?; and 4) how effective were the management and support systems at delivering services when they are required? The method of the research used a quantitative approach by using survey method. The results of the research were: 1) the effects of the instructional design and delivery of English course to the student satisfaction were during English online class, the students were given chances to use materials from various sources and to interact each other virtually; 2) the impacts of lecturer roles had on the student satisfaction, including feedback and assessment were important, especially by providing various contents and sources of materials, help students in overcoming learning problems, feedback and assessment; 3) student duties and responsibilities were important, including motivation and interaction in joining English online class; and 4) the management and support systems were generally effective at delivering services when they were required.

Abstract

The problem in this research was how is students’ motivation in reading English at grade VIII SMP Negeri 4 Baubau. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The population of the research was grade VIII of SMP Negeri 4 Baubau which consisted of 11 classes with total 345 students. The sample in this research was taken with random sampling technique that was class VIII.1 which consisted of 25 students. The instrument used was Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ). The research outcome showed that 5 students out of the total student are in high motivation category, 13 students out of the total students are in average motivation level, and 7 students out of the total students are in low motivation level. Then, it can be concluded that the students’ reading motivation level is in the average motivation level.

Abstract

The problem statement of this research was does the use of animation video improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Baubau. The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of animation video improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Baubau. The type of the research was a quantitative research with applying quasi- experimental method. The population was the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Baubau as many as 325 students. The sample was taken using cluster random sampling amounted 58 students. The data collection was carried out by using an instrument that was test. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the application of animation video on the vocabulary mastery of seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Baubau. The t-test results show that the probability value (t-count) is 2.295 and sig (2-tailed) is 0.025 which is less than 0.05 so that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected. It means, there is a significant effect before and after the application of animation video, as well as the average value of pre-test and post-test experimental class 51.55 to 80.76. as well as the control class 55.24 to 70.28.

Abstract

Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah apa strategi guru dalam mengajar membaca dan bagaimana tanggapan siswa terhadap strategi yang digunakan guru dalam mengajar membaca di SMAN 1 Kambowa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui strategi guru Bahasa Inggris dalam mengajar membaca dan untuk mengetahui tanggapan siswa terhadap strategi yang digunakan guru dalam mengajar membaca di SMAN 1 KambowaPenelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah seorang guru bahasa Inggris di SMAN 1 Kambowa dan 25 responden siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Kambowa. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi, wawancara dan angket. Teknik analisis data adalah tiga tahapan yang dirumuskan oleh Miles dan Huberman yang terdiri dari reduksi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan analisis data menunjukkan bahwa guru menggunakan dua macam strategi dalam pembelajaran membaca di SMAN 1 Kambowa, yaitu QARs (hubungan tanya jawab) dan permainan. Respon siswa terhadap strategi yang digunakan guru yaitu dari 25 siswa terdapat 20 siswa (80%) dalam kategori sangat setuju dan 5 siswa (20%) dalam kategori setuju.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to identify the most common types of code mixing employed by the teacher at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau, as well as the justifications for doing so. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach. One of the English teachers at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau was the subject. Interviews and observation were used as the data collection methods. Data reduction, data visualization, and conclusion drawing/data verification were the three data analysis techniques used in this study. Based on the results of this study, the teacher at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau employed insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization as three different methods of code mixing. The most common type of code mixing used was alternation. The results of the interview session revealed that the instructor at SMP Negeri 14 Baubau mixed codes when teaching English in the classroom because of the students' poor English proficiency and habit. It made it simpler for students to comprehend the lessons that the teacher was conveying or explaining by using code mixing when teaching English.

Abstract

Banjir merupakan fenomena alam yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor-faktor di luar kendali manusia, tidak mungkin untuk sepenuhnya mencegah terjadinya banjir. Oleh karena itu, fokusnya adalah pada pengurangan risiko dan dampak yang ditimbulkan oleh banjir. Pengabdian masyarakat kepada korban banjir sangat penting karena memiliki banyak manfaat, seperti pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar seperti makanan, air bersih, pakaian, dan tempat tinggal. Selain itu kebutuhan Pendidikan dan sarana penunjang Pendidikan juga sangat diperlukan oleh anak sekolah yang terdampak banjir. Selain kebutuhan materil, bantuan berupa dukungan Psikologis juga sangat diperlukan, dimana banjir bisa menyebabkan trauma dan stress bagi para korban. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan di Sabbang Paru, Kabupaten Wajo, Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan khususnya pada salah satu sekolah yang terdampak dan jauh dari perkotaan, yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 8 Juni 2024. Metode pengabdian yang dilakukan berupa difusi iptek yaitu pemberian bantuan berupa peralatan alat tulis, buku cerita dan papan tulis. Serta advokasi berupa pemberian edukasi tentang tanggap darurat bencana banjir, trauma healing pasca bencana dan juga games hiburan untuk memotivasi para siswa/siswi yang berdampak banjir. Pengabdian ini mendapat apresiasi dari masyarakat khususnya pihak sekolah yang berdampak banjir, bantuan diterima langsung oleh kepala sekolah dan beberapa perwakilan siswa. Motivasi dan keceriaan juga tampak dari siswa/siswi yang datang setelah diberikan motivasi untuk menggapai cita-cita melalui Pendidikan.
