Abstract

Limited understanding regarding healthy relationships, religious implications, the impact of LGBTQ occurrences, psychological susceptibilities associated with LGBTQ, and inappropriate approaches towards LGBTQ individuals can heighten one's susceptibility towards developing LGBTQ tendencies or mental disorders. This initiative, referred to as IbDM, will be executed with the utilization of a social campaign approach and interactive talk shows, to cultivate positive awareness and effective strategies for addressing and preventing the rise in LGBTQ transmission. The social campaign involve distributing pamphlets and pocketbooks about LGBTQ matters across all faculties in Unand, serving as a reminder and platform for introspection in anticipation of LGBTQ transmission. Additionally, incorporating interactive and captivating talk show activities featuring knowledgeable speakers will enable the dissemination of understanding, thereby enhancing the academic community's awareness in a more profound manner. The content presented during these activities will encompass various aspects of LGBTQ, including social and religious dimensions, cultural and legal considerations, and health-related perspectives. This activity has provided an overview of the perceptions of students involved as participants regarding LGBTQ behaviour. All participants (100%) view LGBTQ as deviant behavior, the importance of the role of parents in building children's character and identity, and the large influence of the social environment as a barrier to LGBTQ. Therefore, it is important for the role of policymakers at the central and regional government levels, leaders of higher education institutions, the academic community, health practitioners, and other fields to be able to work together in enforcing strict legal regulations against LGBTQ, socializing the impact of sexual identity and orientation deviation, strengthening the role parents and social environment as deterrents to deviant sexual identity and orientation behavior.

Abstract

Red guava fruit is one type of fruit that quickly changes colour, texture and spoilage. This is of course a problem for farmers. At harvest time, not all of the fruit is marketable. So sometimes farmers just leave the fruit on the tree, because if harvested it will only increase operational costs. The KWT Jambu Biji Bengke Sakato, VII Koto Sungai Sariak, Pariaman is a group of red guava farmers. They tried to find a solution to this problem by discussing with TIM PPM KIMIA UNAND of the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, Universitas Andalas. Finally it was agreed that the solution was to make products from red guava. The products made in this program are dodol and red guava ice cream. The KWT members and the Tim PPM KIMIA UNAND together made these two types of products. The results obtained, dodol and ice cream made are quite delicious and have an attractive appearance. This product can be an alternative to red guava processing that has economic value.

Abstract

Optimal nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting the growth and development processes of children. One abundant and easily accessible source of nutrition is milk. The protein and calcium content in milk support bone formation, brain development, and various bodily functions. This community service activity aims to provide education to elementary school students about the benefits of milk as a nutritional source and to enhance milk consumption habits. Education is conducted through face-to-face interactions using lecture and discussion methods. The material is presented through PowerPoint presentations, videos, and the distribution of leaflets to the participants. To assess the success of the educational activities, pretests and posttests are conducted on the participants. The results of the educational activities show an increase in the average posttest scores compared to the pretest scores regarding the benefits of drinking milk. This indicates that the educational activities have successfully improved the participants' understanding of the importance of including milk in a healthy diet.

Abstract

Indonesia is a disaster-prone region because it is located in the Ring of Fire and at the confluence of four tectonic plate faults: the Eurasian, Indo-Australian, Philippine Sea, and Pacific plates. A disaster is an event that cannot be predicted in terms of its arrival and impact but can be reduced in terms of risk. Community preparedness related to disasters needs to be improved because of the risk of disasters that can threaten the lives and livelihoods of people affected by disasters. Padang City is one of the coastal areas in West Sumatra Province with the risk of disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides because one of the factors is its geographical condition, which is located in a potential natural disaster area. Therefore, preparedness training is needed to help people who live in disaster-prone areas cope with and reduce disaster risks. This disaster preparedness and mitigation training was held on 8 November 2023 at the Batang Arau Village Office, Padang Selatan District, Padang City. The conclusion obtained after the implementation of this activity is the community's insight into the importance of being prepared and mitigating disasters that have the potential to occur in residential areas.

Abstract

In the Baruah Gunuang Public Health Center area, located in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise, with only 14% of hypertension patients regularly seeking medical check-ups in 2022. Additionally, only 69.44% of patients adhere to regular treatment, far below the target of 100%. To address this issue, community awareness must be increased through the Empowerment Movement of Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Hypertension Cadres in the SIGADIS Program (Hypertension Prevention and Detection Action). This program aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of cadres in monitoring and managing hypertension within the community. The program was conducted by the Faculty of Public Health at Andalas University in collaboration with the local health center from September to October 2023. Activities included outreach, training, and health screening involving community members appointed as cadres for hypertension prevention in each village. The results of this program showed an increase in the knowledge and skills of the cadres in hypertension prevention and control, as measured by a 5-point increase in pre-test and post-test scores, with no participants scoring below 80 by the end. This improvement in competence is expected to strengthen the role of cadres in education, early detection, and patient recruitment for hypertension, thereby reducing the prevalence of hypertension in the area. The SIGADIS program serves as a community empowerment model for addressing health challenges related to hypertension, particularly in areas with limited access to healthcare services.

Abstract

The discovery of active compounds such as citronellol, citronellal, and geraniol in citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus) opens new opportunities for using essential oils derived from this plant. These compounds are well-known for their aromatic properties and various benefits in the derivative product industry. Combining these three compounds presents immense potential for developing high-quality products such as soaps, aromatherapy, and pesticides. Community engagement activities were conducted in Cibarani Village, Lebak Regency, Banten. The fertile land in Cibarani Village is well-suited for cultivating citronella grass (C. nardus). The activities began with outreach and training sessions to educate the local community on the potential of C. nardus essential oil. This initiative aimed to equip the community with adequate knowledge and skills to process C. nardus oil into various derivative products. The derivative products introduced included botanical pesticides for controlling pests in cultivated plants. This information is particularly beneficial for the Mekar Rahayu Farmers Group, enhancing their knowledge and understanding of the potential of C. nardus essential oil as a botanical pesticide. It is hoped that the community will be able to produce botanical pesticides for personal use and sale to other farmers, thereby increasing their income. Simultaneously, the team also collected samples of citronella grass from Cibarani Village for distillation. The C. nardus oil obtained was analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to identify the dominant compounds. The essential oil produced from citronella grass in Cibarani Village, based on GC-MS results, revealed the main components as geraniol at 25.53% with a retention time of 13.212 minutes, citronellol at 15.71% with a retention time of 12.694 minutes, and citronellal at 17.19% with a retention time of 11.422 minutes.

Abstract

Leprosy is still a health problem in several countries, including Indonesia. Disability due to leprosy is a health threat for sufferers and causes quality-of-life problems that can disrupt the productivity of leprosy patients. Ocular involvement in leprosy is joint, but little data has been reported. Apart from multi-drug treatment (MDT), leprosy sufferers must also be able to carry out continuous self-care to prevent further disability. This is a collaborative activity between the Department of Ophthalmology and Dermatology Venereology of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Andalas in Puskesmas Pauh Kamba district of Padang Pariaman. This is an advocacy activity on self-care (3M: Seeing, Examining, and Protecting) and eye examination. The activity was followed by interactive discussions and continued with a direct examination for skin abnormalities and disabilities, eye examination, and fundoscope. The activity results were obtained from 24 respondents, 11 men and 13 women. The age range is 16-59 years (67%), with the highest level of education being Elementry School graduates, which is 11 people (46%). In the self-care questionnaire of patients, 40% behaved well, and the results of eye examinations almost suffered from dry eye complaints without disabilities.

Abstract

Adolescents are at an age that is vulnerable to sexually deviant behavior. In this phase, providing sexual education is the right step to prevent deviant sexual behavior by teenagers. The number of deviant behaviors in adolescents can affect their reproductive health for the next life. This counseling aims to increase the knowledge of adolescents at SMAN 6 Padang regarding adolescent sexual behavior such as adolescent nutrition, adolescent psychology, adolescent growth and development, adolescent sexuality, reproductive tract infections (ISR) and STIs, HIV/AIDS prevention, and reproductive health for the future, which will come. The activity methods used are counseling and active class sharing using PowerPoint media, posters, and leaflets, as well as a questionnaire with a total of 30 questions; the targets of this activity are students who are members of PIK-R at SMAN 6 Padang. There was an increase in the average response knowledge during the pre-test of 66.75 and post-test of 84.00 with a pre-test standard deviation value of 16.802 and a post-test standard deviation value of 13.338. Based on statistical tests on the frequency distribution results, there was an increase in question scores; the results of the gain score test were low on HIV/AIDS material (0.230) and reproductive health of the elderly and reproductive age (0.257). The gain score results were moderate in child growth and development (0.634), sexuality, gender, and domestic violence (0.692), reproductive tract infections (0.375), reproductive health psychology (0.454), and adolescent nutrition (0.474). From these results, it was concluded that there was an average difference between the pre-test and post-test participants' knowledge, so it could be said that there was an influence of sexual behavior education outreach activities on adolescents. The hope is that after this activity, adolescents will care more and know how important education and education regarding sexuality is for adolescents and can avoid various kinds of sexually transmitted diseases, leading to a healthier and more informed generation in the future.

Abstract

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the significant health problems in the world, including in Indonesia. The prevalence of hypertension in Lima Puluh Kota Regency in 2022 reached 15% or 10,688 out of 70,250 people who took blood pressure measurements. However, only 627 people (11.8%) took blood pressure measurements and received hypertension services according to standards. Therefore, it is necessary to increase public knowledge about hypertension. This service activity was carried out in September 2023 through the emo-demo method, which expects health promotion efforts through an emotional approach. The service activities were carried out on 37 community members, and it was found that there was an increase in the average score of community knowledge from 51.56 to 90.63. An increase can follow this increase in community knowledge, attitudes, and actions toward efforts to prevent and control hypertension, including the prevention of complications of hypertension in the community.

Abstract

By current global needs, students are expected to be able to adapt to a rapidly changing world and participate actively in society. Students must become lifelong learners who need reading literacy and numeracy literacy competencies. Literacy Numeracy, often called numeracy, can be interpreted as the ability to apply mathematical concepts and skills to solve practical problems in everyday life. Starting in 2021, this ability will be measured through the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) aimed at classes V, VIII, and XI. The aim is to obtain information about the quality of a school so that it becomes a basis for improving the learning process in that school, especially concerning students' numeracy and literacy abilities. The problem faced by the Shalih Children's Character IT SMPS (KAS) is a lack of guidance on students' numeracy literacy skills needed to take AKM. Therefore, the Service Team from the Department of Mathematics and Data Science felt it necessary to carry out service at SMPS IT KAS as a continuation of the guidance that had been carried out in the previous year. The method used is to apply the Contextual Teaching Learning model, which helps teachers link learning material with real life and encourages students to connect their knowledge with application in everyday life. It is hoped that implementing this service can help teachers guide students in preparing for AKM in the following year.
