Abstract

“Us” and “them” or othering often brings about world’s most feared phenomenon, xenophobia. This qualitative study purposes to disclose attitudinal strategies used in Chinua Achebe’s “things Fall Apart”. An excerpt from it was analysed through the “APPRAISAL”, especially the “ATTITUDE”, and ‘PERIODICITY” theories. Results reveal that “us” is framed with 4 (+) values and only 2 in (-) while “them” is constructed through only 1 (+) value and 3 (-). The vast majority of the attitudinal strategies used is “Jdg.”, occurring 7 times making up 70%. The other which emerges is “Apr.” which appears only 3 times and contributes 30%.  As commonly held, “us” is narrated in more favors and fewer negatives and “them” in the opposite way to achieve planned hidden goals of persuasion.

Abstract

Due to the increasing rate of human’s economic activity and rapid population growth, twenty first century has seen an unprecedented environmental change. These changes have an unprecedented impact on climate, life-sustaining systems on the earth. Future generations are exposed to great harm by the way in which humans exploit environmental resources of the earth. There is a call among environmental ethicists to review human ethical relationship with the environment as to attain sustainable development for the now and the future generations. Hence, the essence of this paper is to discuss the anthropoholistic environmental ethics, sustainable development and the future Generations. This paper argues that humans need to strive for a new and more respectful relationship with the natural environment in other to attain sustainable development. Also, human obligations towards sustainable development for the future must find a firm basis in social ethics: those obligations have to do with our conception of a just society.

Abstract

Education is a very important variable of economic growth and development. It could be said that the rate of growth of an economy is directly proportional to the quality of education meted on the populace. This is the reason every society strives to educate its citizens. However, Nigeria remains backward in terms of education delivery. There are millions of unemployable graduates rooming her streets searching for jobs. Though many reasons could be pointed as the cause of this, this work beams its searchlight on policymaking and implementation. It argues that if the right policies are made and dutifully implemented, the quality of education would improve. Using the tool of Feyerabend’s anarchism, the work analysed the Nigerian Policy of education, pointing at areas of weaknesses and recommending action points for government and policymakers. It concludes that if Feyerabend’s anarchism is made to guide policy-making in Nigeria, educational progress would ensue.

Abstract

This work examined the thoughts of Taoism as propounded by Lao-Tzu and Complementary Reflection as propounded by Asouzu to discover their nexus and their point of diversion. One basic difference between the two is that complementary reflection is not a religion but Taoism is at once a philosophy and a religion. Notwithstanding the differences in nuances, contents and emphasis, we discovered a striking similarity between the two thoughts – there are geared towards complementarity. However, I believe the major weakness of Taoism over complementary reflection surrounds the concept of Tao, which is a mysterious unverifiable principle of integration.
