Abstract

Purpose — This study examines the determinants of cognitive abilities among school-age children in Indonesia and their effects on subsequent educational attainment and labor market outcomes. Methods — The study uses longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) for 2000 and 2014. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) is employed to identify the determinants of cognitive abilities, while Instrumental Variable–Two-Stage Least Squares (IV-2SLS) is used to estimate their effects on education and wages. Findings — Children’s cognitive abilities are influenced by parental education, parental psychological health, residential location, educational expenditure, and birth order. Higher childhood cognitive scores are associated with greater educational attainment and higher wages later in life. Implications — Policies aimed at improving children’s cognitive development should strengthen family socioeconomic conditions, parental well-being, educational investment, and support for children in disadvantaged areas. Originality — This study provides longitudinal evidence from Indonesia linking childhood cognitive abilities with later educational and labor market outcomes. It also applies an IV-2SLS approach to address potential endogeneity and produce more robust estimates.

Abstract

The important role of banks in supporting sustainable development which includes economic, social and environmental aspects through social and environmental responsibility. One way to make this happen is through the application of the concept of green banking, which places environmental sustainability as a top priority in the banking sector. From this, this study analyzes the impact of profitability, company size, and leverage on green banking practices in the Indonesian Islamic banking sector by considering the role of good corporate governance (GCG) as a moderating factor. Using multiple regression and moderate regression analysis (MRA) shows that profitability has a significant positive effect on green banking disclosures, while firm size and leverage have a negative relationship with green banking practices. The results confirm the role of GCG as an important moderating factor, strengthening the positive relationship between profitability and green banking and reducing the negative impact of firm size and leverage. The implication is the need to focus on improving GCG to encourage broader and more effective green banking practices among banks, while taking into account the complexity of the interactions between these factors.

Abstract

Purpose — This study examines the relationship between trade openness, poverty, and income inequality across 34 Indonesian provinces from 2015 to 2019, while accounting for differences in access to basic services, employment, port infrastructure, and regional income. Method — The empirical analysis employs panel regression models using fixed effects, random effects, and Least Squares Dummy Variable specifications. Model selection is guided by the Hausman test. Poverty is measured using the poverty headcount, poverty gap, and poverty severity indices, while income inequality is measured using the Gini index. Findings — Trade openness is positively associated with poverty incidence and income inequality. In the preferred random-effects specification, trade openness increases the poverty headcount with a coefficient of 0.897 (p < 0.10), while the preferred fixed-effects specification shows a positive effect on the Gini index with a coefficient of 0.0411 (p < 0.01). However, its effects on the poverty gap and poverty severity are not statistically significant. Higher regional income and greater access to several basic services are generally associated with lower poverty outcomes. Implications — Trade expansion should be accompanied by inclusive policies that improve access to basic services, decent employment, and workforce skills. Strengthening these areas can help low-income households benefit more from economic openness while reducing the risks of higher poverty and income inequality. Originality — This study contributes to the trade–poverty literature by examining multiple dimensions of poverty and income inequality within a provincial panel framework in Indonesia, providing evidence that the distributional effects of trade openness differ across welfare indicators.

Abstract

Purpose — This study examines the role of coal and water resource circularity in supporting industrial electricity distribution and evaluates the broader economic impacts of National Strategic Projects (PSN) in Sumatra. Method — Using panel data from seven Sumatra provinces for 2011–2021, the study applies Fixed Effect EGLS estimation using the Coal Circularity Dimension Index (CCDI) and Water Circularity Dimension Index (WCDI), complemented by Interregional Input-Output (IRIO) analysis. Findings — Coal circularity, water circularity, and PLTU-generated electricity positively and significantly affect industrial electricity distribution. IRIO results also indicate stronger manufacturing linkages, household income, and employment, although weaker effects remain in water supply, waste management, recycling, and related sectors. Implications — Resource circularity can strengthen the economic benefits of infrastructure development, but greater integration of environmental sectors is required to improve the sustainability of implementation of PSN. Originality — This study integrates resource circularity indices with panel-data and IRIO analysis to assess both provincial resource efficiency and interregional economic impacts of PSN development in Sumatra.
