Abstract

Most agricultural households in Indonesia are small-scale farmers making them prone to food insecurity. Until recently, no study has assessed the impact of farm size and sociodemographic characteristics on the food insecurity status of agricultural households using a nationwide agricultural household survey in Indonesia. Our study aims to address this gap by utilizing the results of the first Indonesian Agricultural Integrated Survey conducted by BPS in 2021. Applying the Rasch Model and Multinomial Logistic Regression, we found that the farm size has a positive impact in lowering the probability of agricultural households experiencing moderate or severe levels of food insecurity. Our study also found that agricultural households with a higher probability of being food insecure are characterized by having higher members of households, relying only on agriculturalactivities for their livelihood, lower education attainment of household heads, and being led by female farmers. Our study recommends improving the farmers’ agricultural scale by focusing on the improvement of the yield. It can be done through the adoption of mechanization and digital technology. Moreover, we also recommend a social assistance programme for food security targeting agricultural households with characteristics identifiedin our findings.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Climate change poses major challenges to the global economy and society, requiring coordinated efforts to alleviate its impacts. Given the nature of climate change, the adoption of central bank policies offers a more holistic strategy for managing and mitigating climate risks, thereby bolstering the resilience of the financial system and the economy. This paper aims to explore the critical tasks of coping with climate risks and proposes an integrated central bank climate regulatory framework to foster sustainable economic growth, by exploring the transmission mechanisms of central bank policies to support the establishment of just transition targets. The framework delineates three essential strategies, namely: (i) data, tools, and research, (ii) regulation and supervision, and (iii) climate transition policy. This paper shows that the central bank’s climate policies to manage transition risks can navigate just transition and support the achievement of sustainable economic growth. The operationalization of these strategies extends beyond the traditional purview of centralbank activities, necessitating a collaborative and synergistic approach among regulators and industry stakeholders to guide the global economy toward sustainability.

Abstract

The blue economy concept has been adapted as a strategy in setting development programmes and public policies in managing Indonesia’s marine resources. As a supporting instrument, accurate field data is needed when compiling the ocean account. Meanwhile, the support of qualified resources is needed during the field data collection process. Research on mapping water areas using satellite technology and machine learning techniques in producing water maps, especially in coastal areas. The approach is suitable for arranging a physical asset account, which is a component of the ocean account framework. So far, no research has implemented these developments to produce ocean physical asset account. Therefore, this study will cover in arranging the account by utilising Sentinel-2 imagery and implementing Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning methods, which according to previous studies are superior methods for mapping water areas. The modelling results show that there isan extensive change in coral, seagrass, and mixed ecosystem types (a combination of coral, seagrass, and macroalgae ecosystems) between 2020 and 2023.

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the development of the National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) contained in PERPRES 109/2020 and PERPRES 3/2016 concerning the Acceleration of Implementation of National Strategic Projects. The KSPN development in the concept of 10 new Bali but the problem is that some of the KSPN developments are located in environmental conservation areas. This research will look at the interlinkage, income impact, and labor impact of the KSPN construction using the 2016 Interregional Regional Input-Output (IRIO) tables obtained from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) RI and using project value calculation scenarios from KSPN whose data were obtained from the KPPIP. The results of this study indicate that on the Degree of Sensitivity Index (IDK) the dam processing industry sector, the electricity and gas procurement sector is a sector with strong values, but in a linear the air procurement, waste management, waste and recycling sectors are sectors that have no impact from the KSPN. In the Degree of Distribution Index for the electricity and gas procurement sector, the sector with the largest spread of values for weak sector results varies. The results of the Income Impact analysis show that the wholesale and retail trade sectors; car and motorbike repairs as well as the processing industry, while the air supply sector, waste management, waste and recycling are sectors with a small income impact and also have an impact on employment on several islands in Indonesia. The Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries sectors are the sectors with the strongest employment impact on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan due to the existence of KSPN. The recommendation from this research is that there is a need for government evaluation, especially in selecting KSPN in environmental conservation areas as well as development in the circular economy infrastructure concept.

Abstract

This study investigates the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in Bali using nighttime light remote sensing as a proxy for socio-economic activity. The monthly NTL data from the Suomi-NPP VIIRS instrument, spanning from 2014 to 2021, are analyzed. This study focuses on changes in NTL trends before and after the restrictions, specifically the Large-Scale Social Restriction and Welfare Activity Restriction programs. To ensure that the NTL used in this study accurately measures human activity, we integrate the data with built-up area maps from the Global Human Settlement Layer. An ARIMA intervention model is employed to assess the impact of the restrictions on NTL, revealing a significant decrease in certain regions. Furthermore, we find a moderate correlation between NTL and Bali's quarterly GDP data. This study also highlights the potential of NTL remote sensing as a near-real-time proxy for socioeconomic change, allowing for the early evaluation of policy effectiveness. Abstract

The severe economic contraction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has led to high unemployment rates among college graduates. Fresh graduates entering the labor market are often highly sensitive to prevailing economic conditions. The impact of graduating at an unfavorable time can also vary significantly among workers, depending on their field of study. This study has two main objectives. First, it examines the effect of graduation timing, proxied by the unemployment rate, on labor absorption in Indonesia and how long these effects persist. Second, it analyzes the differences in job market sensitivity across disciplines among college graduates in Indonesia, particularly during economic contractions. The data used in this study come from the 2021 Indonesian National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas). The findings indicate that those who graduate during unfavorable economic conditions tend to experience significant income declines for over 10 years. Moreover, they face lower chances of obtaining decent jobs and are more likely to be overeducated for their roles. Additionally, college graduates from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields experience less income compared to those from social sciences and humanities disciplines. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers in promoting income stability, aligning education with labor market demands, ensuring equal access, and fostering cross-disciplinary inclusivity. These efforts could contribute to developing a resilient and adaptive workforce capable of overcoming economic challenges and supporting sustainable economic growth. Keywords: labor market; unemployment rate; STEM; income JEL Classification: J24; J21; E32
