Abstract

This study aims to explore how the concept of multiculturalism is viewed in the Qur'an, how Islamic scholars (mufassir) interpret verses related to multiculturalism, and to what extent multiculturalism influences the essence of being a Muslim. This research is classified as a library study, conducted by collecting various data and information relevant to the topic. The data were examined and analyzed through a study of books, Qur'anic commentaries (tafsir), and scholarly articles related to the subject. The research produced three main findings. First, the Qur'an supports multicultural values, as reflected in several verses that address the diversity of tribes and nations (Q.S. Al-Hujurāt/49:13), the fact that humanity was not created as a single homogeneous community (Q.S. Al-Māidah/5:48), and the call for justice toward all people regardless of their faith or ethnicity (Q.S. Ali ‘Imrān/3:64). Additionally, the Qur'an affirms that there should be no compulsion in religion (Q.S. Al-Kāfirūn/109:6), and that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, irrespective of religious background (Q.S. Al-Anbiyā’/21:107). Second, classical commentators such as Abū Ja‘far aṭ-Ṭabarī (d. 310 AH) and Ibn Kathīr (d. 774 AH) implicitly support the principle of multiculturalism through their interpretation of the word sawā’, understood as universal justice for all, whether Muslim or non-Muslim. Third, the influence of multiculturalism on Islamic identity lies in the understanding that a true Muslim must believe in Allah, have faith in the Last Day, and consistently perform good deeds for all of humanity without discrimination based on religion, nationality, race, language, or other differences.

Abstract

In religious life, there are many differences in characteristics and styles of religious teachings and practices. These differences do not only appear in the context between groups but also between generations. In Islam itself, diversity has existed for a long time until the present. The crucial problem of the many differences is the emergence og claims to absolute truth from each group which often also leads to conflict. To get out of the circle of disputes, this article proposes the views of an Islamic thinker, namely Abdolkarim Soroush, regarding the theory of contraction and expansion. This article includes the results of qualitative research with data sources and documents published from various sources of scientific papers in the from of books and articles and also from other data sources related to this article. The result of this article regarding Soroush’s ideas is that it is necessary to distinguish between religion and religious knowledge in order to achieve effective reconcilation in seeing how one should behave in the presence of many different views, which what we have considered so far is understanding religion, non religion so that there will be potential truth and falsity from each group’s perspective. From this reason, the attitude that needs to be taken is to explore the many different  views in order to gain new meanings from religious teachings, not necessarily fight over each other’s claims to the authority of absolute truth.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of online da'wah on the religious life of the community in Sukaraja Subdistrict, Medan Maimun, in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The phenomenon reflects a shift in community preferences for acquiring religious knowledge, from traditional sermons to social media as the primary source of religious information. The research focuses on the extent to which online da'wah influences the understanding and practice of religion among local residents. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to religion. It is a field research utilizing in-depth interviews, documentation, and analysis of articles relevant to online da'wah. The collected data is analyzed to understand how the community uses social media in their religious lives. The findings indicate that online da'wah has a significant impact on the religious life of the Sukaraja community. People find it easier to understand religious teachings through online media compared to traditional sermons like mass gatherings. The positive effects of online da'wah include improved understanding of previously unclear worship practices, reduced engagement in negative behaviors such as gossiping, and increased interest in sharing da'wah content such as videos, motivational quotes, Qur’anic verses, and hadiths. However, the use of online da'wah must remain grounded in the Qur’an and Hadith and must avoid provocation or hate speech. The study concludes that online da'wah plays a major role in supporting the community’s understanding and practice of religion, particularly by providing accessible and relevant alternative learning sources for the modern society.
