Abstract

Unila retention pond water not only received stormwater but also greywater from Griya Kencana’s drainage outlet. It might drive the to water quality degradation. Hence, the stacked Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) were utilized to treat the water. MFC utilize microbial activities to degrade the organic pollutant in wastewater while simultaneously generating bioelectricity through biochemical reactions. In this research, the MFCs was configured in series and parallel set up with overall number of cells was 12 for each configuration. But in parallel, it consists of two set of 6 cells series set up. The reactor consisted of graphite that function as the anode and zinc to work as cathode. The spacing between electrodes was 1 cm. Each cell of MFCs was design as air cathode system. The operation of MFCs was a batch system with Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) 7 days. The research objectives were to evaluate the capability of stacked MFCS (series and parallel) to treat the water in term of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Removal and to generate electricity. The results demonstrated that the stacked MFCs had successfully treated the water with efficiency of COD removal 22.34% for series configuration and 8.51% for parallel configuration. The systems also achieved electricity generation by maximum voltage 8.11 V and 4.12 V for series and parallel respectively. Maximum current value for series MFCs was 0.14 mA and parallel MFCs was 0.15 mA.

Abstract

The ash of Imperata cylindrica (cogon grass) contains silica that can be utilized for sodium silicate production. This work investigated its extraction using a sodium carbonate-assisted alkaline process. To evaluate silica recovery, 25 g of cogon grass ash was extracted with sodium carbonate solution at 100 ± 5 °C under different extraction times, sodium carbonate concentrations, and solvent volumes. The resulting filtrate was concentrated to obtain sodium silicate solution, and the effectiveness of the extraction process was assessed through silica recovery. The results revealed that all operating variables investigated had a significant effect on silica recovery. The best result was obtained at 75 min extraction time, 25 wt% sodium carbonate concentration, and 350 mL solvent volume, with a silica recovery of 41.59%. The increase in silica recovery was attributed to enhanced silica dissolution and improved mass transfer between the solid and liquid phases. The increase in silica recovery was influenced by more effective silica dissolution during extraction. Even though the recovery was lower than that commonly obtained from rice husk ash, cogon grass ash can still be considered a promising alternative silica source.

Abstract

Heat exchangers are essential equipment in petroleum processing, functioning to transfer heat between fluids to enhance process energy efficiency. Over extended periods of operation, the performance of these heat exchangers can decline significantly due to the formation of fouling on the heat transfer surfaces. This study aims to analyze the heat transfer efficiency and evaluate the impact of the fouling factor on a shell and tube heat exchanger (HE-05) operating in the crude oil refinery unit at PPSDM MIGAS Cepu. The research method employs a quantitative approach based on actual operational data obtained through direct field observations, including temperature data, flow rates, fluid densities, and equipment technical specifications. Performance evaluation was conducted by calculating the overall heat transfer coefficient, fouling factor, pressure drop, and thermal efficiency. The analysis results indicate that the overall heat transfer coefficient under clean conditions (Uc) was 4.65 Btu/ft².hr.°F, while under actual operating conditions (Ud), it decreased to 4.31 Btu/ft².hr.°F. The obtained fouling factor reached 0.0169 ft².hr.°F/Btu, exceeding the recommended minimum standard value, which indicates an accumulation of foulants. Nevertheless, the heat transfer efficiency of the equipment was recorded at 82.8%, which is classified as good and remains within the ideal efficiency range for shell and tube types. The pressure drop values on both the shell and tube sides were also confirmed to be far below the maximum allowable limits, suggesting that the equipment is still hydraulically suitable for operation. Based on these findings, scheduling periodic maintenance and cleaning is highly necessary to sustain the operational efficiency and performance of the heat exchanger
