Currently, social dynamic is growing fastly. A similar situation can also be seen in Indonesian societies, including in the smallest scale, which is family. This study aims to answer whether the definition of family that is used by the Indonesian government is still relevant to portrait the condition of societies in this country nowadays. This study used literature review as the primary data source and anthropological approach as an analysis tool. This article presents discussions on family dynamics in Indonesia, family and marriage, long distance family, as well as family and Indonesian culture. In conclusion, the family concept in Indonesia should not be constrained by structure, location and gender division. Therefore, Indonesia as a state should construct a more flexible definition of family to adjust community diversity and to shed lights on various family contexts and individual experiences.

Data on contraceptive methods use are needed to evaluate the family planning program and contraceptive needs in the future. Therefore, it is important to understand the changing of contraceptive methods’ usage and influential factors to choose a certain contraceptive method. This study aims to find out the displacement dynamics of modern contraceptive use in Indonesia, both short term and long term methods. The study analyzed data from the National Socio-economic Survey (Susenas) in 2015 by using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The results of the study show a shifting on contraceptive use that was previously dominated by the short-term methods to the long terms ones, mostly by couples of childbearing age with a smaller number of children. This study also found a correlation between the choice of contraceptive method and the number of children ever born to couples of childbearing age. The changes of couples of childbearing age’s mindset on the desirable number of children are likely to be considered when deciding to shift to long-term contraceptive methods, such as tubectomy, vasectomy, IUD, and implant.

The issue of women empowerment has been a critical development agenda, both in national dan international level. However, it would be difficult for women to be empowered if gender inequality still exists in essential aspects in development processes. This article aims to find out regencies/municipalities with high gender inequality in West Sumatera Province. This study employed a biplot method to analyze the 2015 Gender Empowerment Index data. Such method categorized regencies and municipalities in West Sumatra into three groups based on the components of gender empowerment. Of the three groups, the first group has prominent characteristics regarding their gender inequality that shown from high gender imbalances concerning women and men as professionals, managers, administrators and technicians and representation in parliament. Meanwhile, the second group features regions with a medium level of women’s contribution to income and women’s representation in parliament. Furthermore, the third group is attributed to a high proportion of women in parliament. The results from biplot method analysis show of 99.94% and STRESS score of 15.98%. These values indicate that the results are quite similar to the real condition.

Maternal and child mortality is still considered a health issue in Indonesia. Health behavior during pregnancy is an essential factor that determines the health of mother and baby. This study aims to examine the behavior of maternal health during pregnancy in Medan City and to analyze its important social determinants. Quantitative data collection using a survey of 400 households in 20 urban villages in Medan City, North Sumatera Province. This study found that 49% of respondents had good behaviors during pregnancy, while those with moderate and poor behaviors during pregnancy were 22% and 29%, respectively. Ordinal logistic regression model indicates husband education, insurance ownership, service quality, and household financial autonomy as social determinants of maternal health behavior during pregnancy. Many factors influenced maternal health behavior during pregnancy both from supply and demand side of health services. Thus, to improve maternal health behavior during pregnancy, it is essential to develop the mother’s knowledge of the importance of antenatal care. Besides that, health service providers also need to ensure the quality of their health services

Family resilience is needed to support its members to face challenges and prevent them from risks of the problems around them. Although the concept of family resilience has been mentioned in Law No. 52/2009 on Population Growth and Family Development, universal indicators to understand the level of family resilience have not been available yet. This study aims to (i) analyze the category of family resilience between intact and single families; (ii) test the reliability and validity of family resilience indicators; and (iii) examine the effect of family structure towards family resilience. This paper used data from the study of the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection in collaboration with the Center for Gender and Children's Studies LPPM-IPB in 2015 in Bogor Regency. Reliability and validity tests indicate family resilience indicators that used in this study are reliable and valid. Also, intact families is more resilient than single families, both of each component and in total. These findings indicate the significant effect of family structure on total family resilience. Future research is recommended to test the validation of a broader scope of family resilience indicators that look at the different demographic and socio-economic conditions of the regions.

Semarang is a metropolitan city located in the northern coast of Java Island with about 1.7 million inhabitants. This city encounters two problems concerning with water, namely rob floods and clean water availability. This paper aims to study about access of the population to clean water and the issues faced by the community related to its availability. This study used data from the research conducted by Urban Human Ecology research group, Research Center for Population - LIPI in 2012. This study applied a qualitative approach through interviews and focussed group discussions (FGDs). The results show that people who live in areas that are often hit by rob floods cannot access clean water and have to buy it to fulfil their household needs. Another problem faced in the city is undrinkable groundwater due to environmental degradation and seawater intrusion. On the other side, the regional water company (PDAM) in this city has not been able to serve clean and drinkable water for the entire area of Semarang due to its limited service network. In order to meet the need of water, it is recommended to strengthen the company capabilities through human capital development as well as an expansion of clean water networks in the city
