Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a cognitive partner in education, capable of planning tasks, monitoring progress, and evaluating solutions on a learner’s behalf. This conceptual synthesis paper examines the risk that such AI tools, while improving immediate performance, may erode students’ metacognitive abilities in their capacity to plan, monitor, and evaluate their own thinking. Drawing a parallel with GPS navigation research, where habitual turn-by- turn guidance has been shown to impair spatial memory and hippocampal engagement, we introduce the metaphor of AI as a “GPS for thinking". Through an integrative review of literature spanning cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and the learning sciences, we synthesize evidence that AI-assisted learning can lead to a form of cognitive disuse atrophy, specifically by short-circuiting the metacognitive loop. Emerging studies reveal that students who rely heavily on AI tutors often perform worse when the tool is removed, suffer from an illusion of explanatory depth, and struggle to articulate the reasoning behind their answers. To counter these effects, we propose a shift from a GPS model where the tool issues commands to a compass model, where the tool provides orientation while preserving learner agency. Five evidence-informed design principles are advanced: prompting planning before assistance, delaying and fading feedback, embedding mandatory reflection pauses, making AI reasoning visible, and calibrating learners’ confidence. The article argues that the long-term goal of educational AI must be to strengthen, not supplant, the student’s inner compass.

Abstract

The study addresses the ongoing sustainability issues faced by agricultural SMEs in Southwest Nigeria, despite many entrepreneurial development initiatives focused on innovation, technology adoption, and governmental assistance. This study explicitly analyses the impact of innovation and technology adoption on the sustainability of agricultural SMEs and assesses the role of government policies and support measures in bolstering their resilience against the region's changing economic landscape. The research employs a quantitative survey design with a study population of 385. Data were collected from agricultural SME operators using structured questionnaires, and the gathered data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that, despite the perceived insufficiency of government support being relatively low, innovation and technology adoption, combined with government support and policies, exert a statistically significant collective influence on the sustainability of agricultural SMEs, accounting for a considerable portion of the variance in sustainability outcomes. This indicates that, while agricultural entrepreneurs are aggressively using technology and new techniques to enhance performance, the advantages are limited by inconsistent, inadequate, or poorly executed support mechanisms. The study recommends that improving the long-term sustainability of agricultural SMEs in Southwest Nigeria necessitates not only the dissemination of innovation and digital tools but also a purposeful redesign of government policies and programs to ensure they are more stable, accessible, and responsive to the distinct needs of agricultural enterprises.

Abstract

East Luwu Regency is a strategic food-producing area that increasingly faces a double exposure to crop-pest infestations and hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding. Until now, the assessment of post-disaster economic losses in the region has leaned on manual recapitulation, a method that is slow, prone to human error, and unable to capture the spatial variability between land parcels. The resulting delay holds up the disbursement of government relief and rice-farming insurance claims, which weakens the capital resilience of smallholders. This study develops SIKAVALTA, a responsive web-based geographic information system that converts physical crop damage from biotic and abiotic hazards into a monetary value expressed in Rupiah. The system was built through a Research and Development approach using the JITU method, namely Data Netting, Formula Interpretation, Web Technology, and Validity Testing. The prototype integrates on-map land digitization, automatic geodesic area computation, a deterministic valuation engine for rice and oil-palm commodities, and report export in document and spreadsheet formats. Black-Box testing confirmed that every feature operated as intended, and the user-acceptance evaluation cleared the minimum feasibility threshold. SIKAVALTA therefore shows a prescriptive spatial valuation capability that sets it apart from conventional descriptive mapping systems.

Abstract

Food security constitutes a pillar of national stability according to Law No. 18/2012, yet agricultural productivity is frequently threatened by pests. Chemical pesticides classified as Hazardous and Toxic Materials (B3) are effective but pose risks to health and the environment, induce pest resistance, and impose management burdens as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 22/2021. Tobacco possesses potential for utilization as a biopesticide due to the insecticidal properties of nicotine and its non-B3 classification. Through an empirical research approach integrating legal, agricultural, and environmental analyses, this study employed observation, interviews, regulatory analysis, literature review, and field effectiveness trials. The findings demonstrate that chemical pesticides require stringent management, which is frequently neglected; tobacco biopesticide is recognized under Minister of Agriculture Regulation No. 43/2019 and exhibits regulatory advantages; field trials reduced pest populations by up to 60% within four weeks after planting; implementation remains constrained by technological and research limitations. The utilization of tobacco biopesticide has the potential to reduce costs, mitigate B3 hazards, and support sustainable food security while empowering local farmers through principles of economic circularity, technological self-reliance, income diversification, ecosystem protection, and community empowerment aligned with food sovereignty.

Abstract

A novel series of 5-bromo-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid derivatives conjugated with monosaccharides was synthesized and evaluated in vitro for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Initially, the core scaffold, 4 5-bromo-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid, was prepared in a single step via the condensation of 5-bromo-2-(methylthio)pyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid with hydrazine hydrate. Subsequently, the resulting hydrazide derivative was successfully condensed with various monosaccharides under Schiff base reaction conditions. Biologically, the total antioxidant capacity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated using the phosphomolybdate assay. The obtained results revealed encouraging antioxidant profiles for several derivatives, demonstrating potent EC50 values comparable to the standard reference, ascorbic acid.
