It is understandable, that many religious people are so offended by theviolence of God as expressed, for example, in the notion of God warriorof war, of God as angry, the notion of hell; that they are troubled inreading or praying the psalms, or the Bible. These notions are quitecontrary to the idea of God in the New Testament as the CompassionateGod, the Loving One, the Ever Forgiving God, The God-Father whoalways wait for His lost-children to return home, etc. How one couldperceive violence throughout the Bible related to God? Does God havetwo-fold faces ? The Good One and the Violent One ?

Abstract

No single of the revealed religions nor Islam, encourages or teachesviolence to its believers. Islam which is based on the Qur’an as its HolyScripture summons its faithfuls to spread peace, harmony and socialwelfare. It is true that we find several verses that encourage war, but jihadin the sense of holy war in Islam is the last way of a self defense after allgood manner of dialogs fail to bear fruits of understanding. In these sensejihad could be done because the truth must stand firm before evil.

Abstract

One of many definitions offered to explain human existence is that humanbeing is a paradoxal being. By paradoxical being one intends that the veryexistence of human being is perceived in its seemingly contradictoryexpression without being contradiction. Human being is materialspiritual,individual-social, etc. This paradoxical nature constitutes humanexistence. It affects essentially his/her personality, religion, act, culture,etc. Social status of women in Toba Batak culture is placed in suchparadoxical situation too. In one hand, they are invoked as “Boru niRaja” (the honored daughter), but on the other hand, they are treated as“hatoban” (slaves). This article seeks to show critically the place of TobaBatak women in Toba Batak culture. Our purpose, therefore, is to presentthe social status of Toba Batak women inherited culturally fromancestors. By critically we mean that we seek to present fairly the socialstatus of women in both its negative side and positive one.

Abstract

There is a number of distinctions regarding the nature of aggression and itsfunction. Therefore it is necessary to elucidate clear differences between theactive engagement in gaining mastery over the environment for survival’ssake, and self defence with force when threatened, and enjoyment oftorturing, controlling, or killing without provocation or real need. Of theseexplanations it would elucidatively appear that aggression and violencediffer, but both interact one another.

Abstract

Untuk menjawab kecenderungan ilmu-ilmu modern yang menciutkansegala sesuatu kepada hal-hal yang material, Michael Polanyimenawarkan sebuah alternatif pemahaman realitas. Menurut Polanyi, adahirarki kenyataan. Suatu realitas dari tingkat yang lebih tinggi tidak dapatdireduksi pada tingkat yang lebih rendah. Misalnya, kesadaran tidak dapatdijelaskan dengan hukum-hukum fisika dan kimia yang terjadi pada otak.Pengetahuan menyeluruh tentang setiap bagian dari suatu kenyataan,tidak dapat menjelaskan keseluruhan kenyataan tersebut. Dalam cahayapemahaman kenyataan seperti itu Polanyi membela adanya realitasmetafisis dan spiritual yang harus diakui bila martabat manusia ingindihormati.

Abstract

The labourers’ numbers have increased in line with the development ofindustrialization. But this development did not parallel to the appreciationon the fruit of the labourers’ work. Since long labourers become theobject of work and violence. Church social teaching has anticipatedlabourers’ problem since the year 1891 through the Encyclical letter“Rerum Novarum”. It’s main point is that man is homo laborans. Whenhuman put in on the job, they will fulfil their needs and also form theirself-integrity. Therefore men’s/women’s job must be paid in a properpayment in accordance to the fruit of their work and ability of enterprise.Communion secure and prosperous should be the aim of this movement.Bonum Commune gives assurance to the rights of every human asindividual, and right of every human in the certain social communities.The church social teaching should be the light on the labourers’movement to make a change in an injustice toward bonum commune.
