Abstract

This article focuses on a specific topics rarely discussed in the scholarship of Islam Nusantara, namely the contribution of Islam Nusantara in addressing agrarian problems experienced by the community. To disclose such contribution, the author proposes the perspective of “access and exclusion” as a theoritical framework for understanding the nature of social struggle in the agrarian field. Based on this, the author will disclose the contribution of Islam Nusantara in “pursuing access” and at the same token “preventing exclusion” within various situations of agrarian struggle, starting from the family level (as concerned with inheritance system and joint marital property) to broader level of socio-agrarian relations (as related to inequalities in land tenure, relations of production and spatial allocation). In addition, the author will examines “agrarian ijtihad” issued by Nahdlatul Ulama and also proposes the idea of “agrarian waqf”—both constitute religious responses to “challenges of access” and “threats of exclusion” taking place within the community. Abstract

ISLAM NUSANTARA: Journal for Study of History and Culture dimaksudkan sebagai wadah untuk membangun pengetahuan atau keilmuan tentang Islam Nusantara.

Abstract

This paper examines the Islam Nusantara graduate program established by the Islamic Studies Institute of Nahdlatul Ulama (Stainu) in 2013 and later continued by the Nahdlatul Ulama University of Indonesia (Unusia). As the largest Islamic social organization in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has articulated Islam Nusantara as a framework emphasizing moderation, tolerance, and the accommodation of local cultures, particularly as a response to the strengthening conservative turn in Indonesian Islam following the country’s democratic transition in 1998. To institutionalize and disseminate this perspective, NU founded a dedicated graduate program focusing on Islam Nusantara. After outlining the rise of Islamic conservatism and the promotion of Islam Nusantara by both NU and the state, this study analyzes graduate theses produced within the program by examining their abstracts and the socio-demographic backgrounds of their authors. The findings show that the majority of thesis authors are young scholars, predominantly male and Java-born, and that many theses focus on harmonious forms of Islamic adaptation to local cultures, often centered on the authors’ regions of origin. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for more comparative and critical approaches to local variations of Islam Nusantara in future theses and dissertations, in order to enable the program to engage more reflexively and analytically with the concept of Islam Nusantara itself.

Abstract

The discourse on indigenizing of social sciences has been popular among Indonesian scholars since 1970s. However, it has not shown any significant development, in spite of many writings of Nusantara scholars that can be bases of references to develop sociological theories of Nusantara, such as the manuscripts of Kawruh Jiwo Ki Ageng Suryomentaram and Amanat Galunggung. Making an effort to indigenize social sciences of Nusantara, the present study investigates both manuscripts. The results of the study argue that there are basic theories of sociology discussed in those two manuscripts. For example, the concepts of social integration (kabuyutan), division of labor, and historical consciousness, which are discussed in the manuscript of Amanat Galunggung. The sociological perspective of Amanat Galunggung is very similar to the structural-functional theory. While, the concepts found in Kawruh Jiwo Ki Ageng Suryomentaram, such as the concepts of four division of human being, feeling (rasa) and intention (karep), and reciprocal relations between human and society. Those theories are genuine and authentical; and if the theories are developed, they will result in a typical of Nusantara sociological theory. Abstract

This article examines the Nahdlatul Ulama in the Netherlands. Nahdlatul Ulama is the largest Muslim organization in Indonesia which is now starting to open branches overseas, including in the Netherlands. Despite its traditional pattern, NU has a religious vision which has been very responsive to global connectivity from the beginning. Based on interviews and observations, this article demonstrates the ability of the Dutch NU to portray itself as a religious diaspora organization that bridges the identity needs of its members regarding the homeland and the reality of daily life in the Dutch multicultural society. Abstract

This article aims to explain how the contestation of social spaces in the lives of the plural society at Lasem it processes dynamically. It is a pattern of space contestation that leads to the affirmation and strengthening of identity or a pattern that leads to the fusion of identities. As a consequence, the first pattern creates social friction or conflict. On the contrary, the second pattern is directed towards acculturation and assimilation of culture which can strengthen social harmony. The important finding of this research is that it can be known the real issue, so that problems related to all parties can be found a solution as well as a resolution. This research also proves that social mechanism preparedness is considered urgent to prevent negative excesses (negative things) from the space contestation. So the space contestation that occurs dynamically proves that the plural society in Lasem has found a valuable experience, namely social resilience in facing all possible emergence of social disintegration. Keywords: contestation, space, social mechanisms and an plural society REFERENCE: Abercrombie, Nicholas, at.all., 2010. Abstract

This study challenges the prevailing assumption that theological discourse in the Malay–Indonesian world (Nusantara) has been exclusively shaped by Ashʿarism. It seeks to demonstrate that Māturīdism developed alongside Ashʿarism through transregional scholarly networks and constituted an integral component of Sunni theological formation in Nusantara. The research employs a qualitative historical approach grounded in manuscript and library-based study. It examines theological works produced by Nusantara ʿulamāʾ between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, situating them within broader global networks of Islamic intellectual exchange. Particular attention is given to patterns of transmission, doctrinal articulation, and terminological usage that indicate the presence of Māturīdī theological reasoning. The study finds that theological discourse in Nusantara represents a continuous extension of global Sunni kalām traditions rather than a singular Ashʿarī trajectory. While Ashʿarism became more institutionally visible, Māturīdī theological elements were also transmitted, adapted, and embedded within local scholarly production. The two traditions functioned not as competing doctrines but as complementary strands within Sunni orthodoxy. Māturīdism in Nusantara is thus identifiable as a method of theological reasoning characterized by moderation, rational balance, and doctrinal equilibrium. By foregrounding the presence of Māturīdism, this study reconfigures the intellectual map of Islamic theology in Nusantara and underscores its integration within wider Sunni networks. It contributes to Southeast Asian Islamic historiography by demonstrating the plurality of theological genealogies and by offering a renewed perspective on the methodological foundations of Sunni thought in the region.

Abstract

Studies of the archipelago (Nusantara) on the notes of foreign travelers written in the 9th and 10th of centuries are still quite rare.  Indeed, there have been several studies on the notes of travelers such as Ma Huan (China), Tome Pires (Portuguese), Ibn Bathuthah (Arabic), and some others. But, these studies revolve around the notes of travelers after the 10th of century.  Meanwhile, notes of travelers who came to the archipelago (Nusantara) in the century before 10 AD have not got serious attention yet. This book is a travel note's report which captures various activities in India, China and Southeast Asia. This book also contains a history about how Islam met in the Sarandib area.  There are many interpretations of sarandib accurate location today. The findings of Keram Kevonian in his research on the names of regions in the Indian Ocean region using Armenian language sources stated that Sarandib means Swarnadipa which was no other than Sumatra.

Abstract

Tafsir karya Kolonel Bakri Syahid berjudul "al-Huda: Tafsir Qur'an Basa Jawi", seorang mufassir militer, apresiatif terhadap kebijakan Orba; menyokong Negara Demokrasi Pancasila, BIN/BAKIN, UUD 1945, Pelita 1 s.d. V, ABRI/TNI, negara relijius yang “bukan negara agama dan bukan negara sekuler”, pembangunan dan ketahanan nasional, juga ibadah politik, ibadah ideologi dan ibadah militer. Ini menguatkan tesis political reading of scripture-nya Tim Gorringe, abuse of quranic verses-nya Azyumardi Azra, juga political interpretation of the qur’a>n-nya Stefan Wild. Inilah corak baru dalam penafsiran: al-lawn al-siyasi (corak politik).

Abstract

The study of Salafism in Indonesia has been narrated its presence, development, activities and ideology in Java. In-depth research on Salafism in Papua is relatively inadequate. This article aims to fill the gap by studying Salafism, specifically the Salafy group of Jafar Umar Thalib (JUT) in Jayapura City and Keerom Regency, Papua. In addition, the responses of local community and Nahdhatul Ulama (NU) Papua toward JUT group will be reviewed. This article is based on the author's field research in Papua in 2018. The main data was collected from interviews, observations and publications related to Salafi-Wahhabi groups. Meanwhile, to explore the perceptions and responses of stakeholders, local communities and organisations, the authors interviewed informants from local residents and leaders of the Papua and Keerom NU Region. This article argues that the presence of Salafism tends to disrupt community harmony and peacebuilding in Papua. Such understanding provides a holistic view of how Salafism has sought to shape its narrative in Papua and NU Papua has rejected the narrative, which has received less attention from researchers in the past.
