Abstract

This study examines Indonesian mathematics textbooks written based on the 1975 curriculum and the 2013 curriculum. This study analyses the physical characteristics, development process, topics breakdown, and contents characteristics of the textbooks. In analyzing the data, the researchers applied content analysis method. Based on the analysis results, it can be inferred that there are some aspects in the 2013 curriculum textbooks should be appreciated, for example, how a Mathematical concept is explained by applying several approaches, varied book references, details of the writer's profile, and examples of varied problems. Nonetheless, there are a number of things need to be continually improved such as the well-prepared trial testing, students’ activities adjustments listed in the textbooks, appropriate and real illustrations. Furthermore, the writers invite all parties to make such eforts that Indonesian Mathematics textbooks in the future may adjust and leverage the latest technological updates.

Abstract

The awareness that mathematics exists at the respective culture needs to be developed in students’ mind through the integration of ethnomathematics at school. School mathematics is different from pure formal mathematics, while ethnomathematics studies pure informal mathematics as well as applied mathematics. This article contains conceptual reviews focused on the comprehension and scope of ethnomathematics, as well as some views on school mathematics to find out the connection between ethnomathematics and school mathematics, also the role of ethnomathematics in school mathematics. The philosophical foundation that connects ethnomatematics and school mathematics is the nature of mathematics as a social construction. Based on this view, it is identified that there are three connections between ethnomatematics and school mathematics, namely ethnomatematics as a learning object of school mathematics, bridge of informal knowledge leading to formal mathematics, and didactic or pedagogical foundations of school mathematics.

Abstract

The problem of counting the number of shortest paths between two points on a grid is a combinatorial problem that is often found in mathematical competitions or enrichment problems for various levels of school. There are several ways to count, namely by drawing a figure (visual representation), by the number pattern in the Pascal Triangle, and the combination formula. This paper discusses a comparison of each ways related to the problem at hand. On a simple grid all of the three methods can be used. On complex grids the combination formula is the only method can be applied, in some cases the technique of number pattern in Pascal Triangle is still applicable. On the grid with varied obstacles, foresight and flexibility is needed in the selection of the counting methods.

Abstract

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in a variety of educational activities creates lots of conveniences, increases effectiveness and efficiency. It is believed that the use of ICT in the educational process makes learning more interesting, enables explaining the concept more clearly, foster creativity, collaborative skills and many more. Due to the fact that the students are millennial generation, who is quite familiar with ICT in their daily life, the use of ICT is important. In learning mathematics, GeoGebra which is dynamic open source software can be used as a teaching and learning tool for mathematics. However, some are still unaware of the benefits of using GeoGebra to learn mathematics. This article discusses the various benefits of using GeoGebra in mathematics teaching and learning, and several studies that support it. The advantages of using GeoGebra in mathematics teaching and learning are as follows: GeoGebra might be used to demonstrate or visualize mathematical concepts, as well as a means of constructing mathematical concepts. The use of GeoGebra in mathematics learning can foster mathematical reasoning, creativity, support collaboration, involve students more in the learning process. And, the more involved, more effective and efficient the learning is.

Abstract

Mathematics is considered as a difficult subject for some students, leading to a decrease in students’ interest and motivation in understanding mathematical concept. In the process of classroom teaching and learning, mathematics that seems complicated and makes a bad impression for some students is an obstacle for them in solving daily mathematical problems. To deal with this obstacle, a media innovation in mathematics teaching and learning is deemed necessary as a bridge for students to understand the abstract concepts of mathematical objects through the manipulation of real objects. This paper aims to present how to create and use the media of Medan Perkalian dan Pembagian Bilangan Bulat for elementary school students. This media are quite appropriate as a learning medium used to help students understand the concept of multiplication and division, especially for grade II of elementary school students. Using this medium, students are not only capable to deal with multiplication and the division of integers but also easily understand the concept of multiplication and integers division.

Abstract

STEM is a learning approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the problem-solving based activities. The integration of the four scientific disciplines in STEM project activities uses the Engineering Design Process (EDP) stage. This stage is a cycle in the form of repeated steps and might change until a problem-solving solution is identified. The difference of elementary school students’ characteristics and stages of cognitive development as well as the absences of a specific STEM curriculum causes teachers who are new to STEM find it difficult in implementing the existing model. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the stages of the STEM learning model in accordance with the characteristics of teachers and students. This stage was developed with the aim of making STEM easier to apply and easily connecting problems with product development from the STEM project. The variation of the STEM learning model developed includes the stages: create, identify, ideate, plan, build, and communicate. The STEM Learning Model design developed will make it easier for teachers to implement STEM in classroom learning.

Abstract

We are now facing a growing demand of using technology in mathematics classrooms due to the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemics era. In this situation, most teachers among the globe including Indonesia have to employ remote learning practice without proper training and sufficient experience in doing so. This article aims to provide teachers and mathematics education communities, especially in Indonesia, with some research-based principles mainly from SAMR and MAAAD frameworks on how they productively incorporate technology in their mathematical teaching and learning. By doing so, we explain how we can improve our technology integration and how we analyse technology affordances. In addition, we also raise the importance of acknowledging technology limitations, along with the discussion on what to do next for improving our technology integration skills. Keywords: MAAAD, Mathematics Education, SAMR, Technology Integration.

Abstract

Augmented reality is one of the developing technologies and has a good potential to apply in the teaching and learning process. Augmented reality facilitates and improves the quality of teaching and learning process because of the combination of virtual objects with real environments by taking advantage of the use of technology. Augmented reality visualizes abstract concepts for understanding and the structure of an object model. A main characteristic for a medium classified as an augmented reality is combining real and virtual objects, integrated in real and virtual objects, and a real-time interaction. The use of augmented reality in teaching and learning has already been applied to many subjects, such as the concepts of space and geometry in mathematics, the human digestive system of biology, the introduction of traditional houses in social science, and the introduction of wudhu procedure in early childhood education or kindergarten (PAUD/TK) kids.

Abstract

Pascal's triangle has a variety of interesting patterns. This article discusses some of the patterns that might be found in Pascal's triangle and their proofs. In the teaching and learning process, teacher may invite students to observe these patterns, try the patterns to make generalization, make conjecture, prove the conjecture, and communicate the process to others. This procedure is appropriate with the teaching and learning process suggested in the Indonesian 2013 Curriculum.

Abstract

Mathematics teaching and learning is expected to raise 21st century skills called the 4C’s (critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and creative and innovative). One of the activities to reach the mentioned skills is doing graph analysis. The characteristics of graph of exponential and logarithmic function is one of topics in which an analysis is needed. To analysis a graph, students need a right media. Geogebra is software that visualizes mathematics object including graphic function. This paper discusses the way how teach characteristics of graphs of exponential and logarithmic function using Geogebra.
