Abstract

A time deposit is one of the major sources of liquidity of the commercial bank to maintain money supply to the demand of business and household sector. In this context, an interesting query is the determinants of time deposit. This paper measures the determinants of time deposit in the commercial banks of Nepal based on 15 years’ time series data sets from 2000-01 to 2017-18 of the sample commercial banks published by the central bank of Nepal. Using descriptive statistics and multiple regression models as the analytical tools, the paper has found a fluctuating trend of liquidity in the commercial banks but the inclining trend of external and internal variables including GDP, Deposit, Capital, Size of Bank, remittance, and public debt. In this trend, the liquidity of the commercial banks depends significantly on time deposits and remittance inflow. Besides, the positive trend of time deposit from 1994-95 to 2017-18 has caused the positive trend of total deposit from 1994-95 to 2017-18. Additionally, the paper has found that GDP per capita, US exchange rate, interest rate, and the branch of the bank are positively and significant determinants to the time deposit of the commercial bank but the inflation rate is negatively and determinant with significance. The internal variables are more determinants than the external variables to the time deposits. It is clear that time deposit is a reliable and long-term source to main the bank liquidity of the commercial bank for their financial stability and performance depends on more the internal variables than the external variables. Therefore, the commercial bank should reform as mentioned in the monetary policy and money market dynamics to improve the competitiveness and smartness of bank policy including interest rate policy and branch of the commercial banks for effective mobilization of the scattered small resources all over the country for the higher rate of capital formation, investment, and economic growth.

Abstract

This study examined the impact of selected corporate governance variables on the financial performance of selected quoted deposit money bank in Nigeria. More specifically, the study explores the relationship between board size, board composition, audit committee independence, gender diversity, and financial performance - return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA). Arguing from the agency and resource dependency theories, data covering the period 2010-2019 were collected from the audited annual accounts of ten purposively-chosen deposit money banks. To provide robust analysis of data and ensure triangulation of methods, the multiple regression analysis in SPSS version 21 and the Smart PLS structural equation modeling (SEM) were applied. Findings indicate that while board size and audit committee independence are negatively related with corporate financial performance, gender diversity showed positive relationship, and board composition demonstrated mixed relationship. The study recommends among others that firms should try to reduce their board size to plus or minus ten, and also reduce the number of outside (external or non-executive) board members, but with strict adherence to the regulatory guideline. The study proposes a SEM-based model to guide financial institutions post-Covid-19.

This study aimed at investigating the social-cultural influences on fashion consumption behaviour among undergraduate university students basing on the theory of reasoned action (TRA). The population of the study was mainly the Management Science students from two universities from the South-East and South-South Zones of Nigeria. The sample size was 278 while valid response was 256. The survey was based on likert scale structured questionnaire, while the proposed model was tested with the SPSS version 21 Simple Regression Analysis (SRA). It was found that culture, opinion leadership, social class, family and ethnicity have significant influence on fashion consumption among undergraduate students. The study recommends amongst others that marketers in the fashion business should continuously scan their social-cultural environment and assess its influence on consumer’s behaviour both at the personal and societal level with a view to enhancing their capacity to recognize, resist as necessary, and make international decision that will both be beneficial to them and their customers.

Abstract

This study was carried out on records management and organizational performance in Renaissance University Ugbawka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Specifically, this study sought to find out the relationship between: records keeping and employee effectiveness; document handling and employee performance, as well as adequate records safety and availability of record facilities. The study adopted the survey research design using primary sources of data. Fifty-eight full time academic staff of Renaissance University Ugbawka, Enugu state served as the population of this study, out of which, 47 responses were used for analysis. Again, data were collected and analyzed using tables and simple percentages. Stated hypotheses were tested using Multiple Regression Analysis at 0.05 level of significance in SPSS version 21. The study found positive and significant relationships between record keeping and employee effectiveness and between document handling and employee performance. Statistically speaking, the study did not find any positive and significant relationship between adequate records safety and availability of facilities. Thus, the study concluded that proper records keeping helps to avert the stress of duplicating recording efforts, saves time used in recreating such records and enables users to compare performance over time, thereby improving employee effectiveness. Again, when organizations properly handle their records, staff achieve greater results by working in line with the records policies; records become easier to handle and the staff utilize their recording time effectively, thereby improving employee performance. In addition, adequate safety of organizational records enables proper identification and location of records, easy access to records by users and accountability among staff.
