Abstract

Online English learning process, besides providing conveniences, there are also obstacles, this gives rise to various student perceptions. The Purposes of the research are to explore the student perception towards the online English learning process and to provide information about the factor influencing those perception during covid-19 at SMA N 7 Banda Aceh. The research design uses quantitative descriptive. The respondent of the research are students of SMA N 7 Banda Aceh from class X to class XII, while the sample of the research is taken from Class X IPAS 4 there are 21 respondent, class XI IPA 2 there are 27 respondent and class XII IPA 3 there are 20 respondents. Data collecting in this research is used a questionnaire. The data was automatically collected through data answers and recorded in the Google Form as a result of the data input. The majority of students had negative impressions about online English instruction, according to the findings of the study. Students do not understand the subject offered by the teacher, are less appealing, and have negative experience in online learning. Lack of strong signals to access content, a lot of consuming internet quota, less learning atmosphere, and the teacher presented is not maximally accepted by the students are some of the obstacles faced during online learning. For teachers, the approach to overcome online English learning challenges is to learn and share with other teachers, not just from one school, but from other schools as well, so that teaching techniques are more varied. Students are more engaged and enthusiastic to find out other learning references, and for school, there should be a new curriculum program to deal with the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how important the use of English is in developing the tourism sector in Banda Aceh and to find out how English is currently used in the development of the tourism sector in Banda Aceh. The research method used a mixed-method design. The research participants were the leaders and staff at the Banda Aceh City Tourism Office, Kana Tour and Travel, MU Wisata Tour and Travel Company, and Awa Tour and Travel which consists of 30 people, they are 4 leaders and 26 staff. This study used questionnaires and interviews as the instruments. The formula used to analyze the questionnaire data was the percentage formula from the Likert scale, and the interviews results were done through data transcription. After collecting data, it was found that based on the questionnaire answers of the staffs (at Banda Aceh City Tourism Office and Travel Agencies), the results of using English in the development of the tourism sector in Banda Aceh reached 93% which were considered important, and only 7% were not important. Meanwhile, currently in the tourism sector in Banda Aceh, English was also very important to use. These results are based on the interview answers of the leaders (at the Banda Aceh City Tourism Office and Travel Agencies). But the reasons for using it were different, such as making tour packages, providing tourism information, managing travel documents, interacting with international customers, carrying out activities in their respective fields, and working with other relevant agencies.

Abstract

This study focused on teaching vocabulary by using comic strips in Al-Manar Modern Islamic Boarding School Banda Aceh. The aims of study are to investigate whether it is effective to increase students’ motivation in mastering vocabulary by using comic strips and to find out the obstacles faced by the students in using them. The total population of this research was 215 students. The samples of the research are students of class IIA consisted of 21 students of Al-Manar Modern Islamic Boarding School Banda Aceh. The data were obtained from the students by observation, interview, and test. Statistically, the final result of this study is effective. The post test scores are slightly higher than pretest. The researcher applied independent sample t-test calculation to test the hypothesis to analyze the data. The Degree of Freedom (df) is 20. At level of significant 5% and 1% (2,09 and 2,84), the score of t-test (t0) is bigger than ttable : 2,09 < 4,87 > 2,83. Consequently, the hypothesis is accepted. As the result, the hypothesis of this thesis is proved. Therefore, it is effective to increase students’ motivation in mastering vocabulary. It also shows that comic strips help them in learning vocabulary become easier. It can be concluded that teaching vocabulary by using comic strips can be a good motivation for the students. Students have motivation in increasing vocabulary by using it. It made them more spirit and they do not feel sleepy in the class. The class also can be more active. Hence, comic strips can be used to teach English vocabulary to the students. The obstacles faced by the students in using comic strips are limited time provided and the difficulty in memorizing and recognizing words.

Abstract

Korean dramas with the psychological genre are very popular nowadays. Through this psychological Korean drama genre, people begin to get to know some psychological terms, such as stress and depression. Unfortunately, there are many people who have not been able to interpret these two terms correctly.  The aims of this study are to find out how the words stress and depressions influence the audience of psychological Korean dramas and to know the difference of semantic field between the word stress and depression. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The steps taken are (1) data collection with interviews, surveys through questionnaires, and readings text in psychological Korean dramas genre; (2) see the relevance between the data available and the semantic field theory; (3) and draw conclusions from the results of the research. This study uses semantic studies by looking at semantic field of the words stress and depression in psychological Korean dramas and how these words influence the audience. The semantic field is part of semantic system which is looking at the meaning of lexical elements that relate to spoken language used in reality. The subject of this study is a psychology Korean drama and psychology Korean drama audience. The results of this study showed that some respondents who watched the Korean drama misinterpret the meaning of stress and depression. Semantic field of the term stress and depression is set semantic field. Set semantic field refers to paradigmatic relationships because words or elements are in the same set and can replace each other. These two words are still in the same set, namely psychic problems. The writers hoped that it can reduce public misunderstanding of the meaning of the words stress and depression

Abstract

Pragmatics is as a study of meaning conveyed by speakers or researchers and interpreted by listeners or readers. Social media itself is a means of communication that is easily accessed by anyone. Social media itself is a means of communication that is easily accessed by anyone. Everyone is free to reveal anything through their social media accounts. This study aims to describe the forms of hate speech including its illocutionary form found on Instagram and Twitter pages. Hate speech is contradicted to the concept of politeness in a language which is an indicator of linguistic elegance. Instagram and twitter are a social chain that aims to help account owners to share or upload photos to other users. This research used descriptive qualitative. Qualitative methodologies refer to research produces which produce descriptive data: people’s own written or spoken words and behaviours. The data were analysed by using interactive model Technique of Miles, Huberman and Saldana. The object of this study includes comments containing hate speech found on Instagram and Twitter pages. Based on the results of observations on Twitter and Instagram pages, it was found that some of the following data include hate speech aimed at several K-Pop idols and illocutionary comments. The results of the study indicate that 41 comments were indicated as hate speech in the form of insults, 4 comments on defamation, 6 comments on blasphemy, and 2 comments on provocation. Meanwhile, in regards to illocutionary comments, there are 12 assertive utterances, 3 directive utterances, 3 expressive utterances, and 3 declarative utterances.

Abstract

For college students, mastering foreign language such as English brings profitable for their career. Producing the language decently such as the ability of writing in English is one of the output in the language acquisition. In this study, non-English students in the end of their study were chosen as they’ve completed English courses. Moreover, the students were finishing their final project, definitely including the English abstract. Based on their learning experience, the writing process of English abstract showed indirectly their language ability. Regarding with, this study aims at finding whether the students have any learning progress during their study in the college. Additionally, not only the learners’ motivation but also their learning habit, their confidence, and the learning facility during learning English were questioned in this study. The students completing their final project at the certain time were interviewed towards their learning language habits particularly in writing. The data collected were transcribed, analyzed and interpreted qualitatively. The results show that 77.3% of the students felt they have more progress during the target language instruction. Furthermore, 50% of the students believe in stating English on text though they confessed they (68.2%) have lack of English practicing at home. The students’ positive attitudes presented due to their motivation in learning the language. The findings also indicated that all students (100%) believed that their teacher or lecturer motivates them to practicing writing English.
