Abstract

This research aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement using Question-Answer-Relationship (QAR) strategy and to determine students' perception toward the application of QAR strategy. The research design was a pre-experimental design. The population in this research was seven grade students of SMP Tri Dharma consisting of three classes, namely VII A, VII B, VII C. The researchers used 33 students of class VII B as the sample for this research. This research used reading test and a closed ended questionnaire to collect the data. This research used paired sample t-test and percentage analysis to analyze the obtained data. The results of paired sample t-test showed that t- obtained was 25.438 and p. was 0.000 (p<0.05). This means that there was a significant improvement in students' reading comprehension after being taught with the QAR strategy. The results of percentage analysis showed that the students' perception of the QAR strategy was positive. It perceived that the QAR strategy was effective to help the students improve their reading comprehension achievement significantly. Those findings indicated that the QAR strategy was effective in improving students' reading comprehension achievement of descriptive texts for the seventh graders of SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out whether there was significant correlation between students’ learning style and reading comprehension achievement. It utilized correlational research method. The eleventh-graders of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Palembang in academic year 2020/2021 were the population of the study.  The sample was 107 students selected by using purposive sampling technique. Students’ learning style questionnaire and reading comprehension test were the instruments for collecting data. Both instruments were validated before they were distributed to the sample. The data were analyzed using Pearson product moment. The finding revealed that there was no significant correlation between students’ learning style and reading comprehension achievement of the eleventh graders of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Palembang since the p-value (0.845) was lower than 0.05. The rvalue was 0,024, which showed that there was low correlation between students’ learning style and reading comprehension achievement of the eleventh-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Palembang. Based on the finding, it can be concluded that the students’ learning style did not give dominant effect to reading comprehension achievement. It is shown that there was no significant correlation between students’ learning style and their reading comprehension achievement of the eleventh graders of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Palembang.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to see if there is a significant difference in writing abilities between students who are taught using running dictation and those who are not. The quasi-experimental method was used in this study, with a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all eleventh-grade students at Vocational High School Rawas Ulu during the academic year 2021/2022. There were six classes totaling 280 students. The sample included 11.TKJ 1 as the experimental group and 11.TKJ 2 as the control group, selected using purposive sampling. The data was analyzed using the paired sample t-test and the independent sample t-test. Following the findings of this study, the average post-test was 69.31 for the control group and 74.38 for the experimental group. The independent sample t-test results show that the value of sig. (2-tailed) was 0.00 less than 0.05 at the level significant 0.05. While the obtained t-value was 11.809 higher than the critical t-table value of 1.664 with degree of freedom 78, As a result of the test calculation of the independent test t-test the t-obtain > t-table, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that using the Running Dictation technique to teach writing achievement in descriptive text is effective.

Abstract

This research aimed to promote the speaking achievement of the second STIK Bina Husada Palembang midwifery students using reporting technique. This research used a quasi-experimental method, with a non-equivalent group design for the pre-test and post-test. The population consisted of 38 students who were as sample from STIK Bina Husada Palembang's second-semester midwifery students. The sample taken by using total sampling technique to obtained the sample. In collecting the data, a speaking test was utilized. The test was found to be both valid and reliable. The value of t-obtained (5.59) was greater than t-table (2.02) at the significant level of ρ 0.05, according to the results of the independent t-test. It was concluded that the reporting technique could promote students’ speaking achievement. It meant that this technique could help students improve their speaking skills. The reporting strategy proved effective in teaching second-year midwifery students how to interpret a recount text. As a result, it can be concluded that reporting technique can be used by students to improve their speaking English, and teachers can use this technique in teaching and learning the students in order to increase and motivate the students' speaking in STIK Husada Bina.

Abstract

This study was aimed to find out whether there were any significant differences in reading comprehension on descriptive text through PORPE (predict, organize, rehearse, practice, evaluate) strategy and those who were not. There were 66 students of eighth graders of SMP Negeri 13 Palembang were involved in this study as the sample, the experimental group consisted of 33 students and the control group consisted of 33 students. The method of this study was quantitavie method with a quasi experimental design. The experimental group were taught by using PORPE (predict, organize, rehearse, practice, evaluate) strategy. The control group were taught by using discussion strategy. The result of paired sample T-Test in control group showed the value of t-obtained was 6.508 at the significance level 0.000 with degree of freedom was 33 (1.669) and the significance (2 tailed) was lower than 0.05. The result of paired sample T-Test in experimental group showed the value of t-obtained was 5.003 at the significance level 0.000 with degree of freedom was 33 (1.669) and the significance (2 tailed) was lower than 0.05. The result of independent t-test from experimental and control group shown that t-obtained was 1.742 and it was higher than t-table 1.669.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out (1) whether there was any significant correlation between listening strategies and listening achievement; (2) the most effective strategies being used by the students. The writers applied quantitative research method as design method. The results of the Pearson’s Product Moment correlation test showed that the obtained correlation coefficient data r-obtained (0.403) was higher than r- table (0.329). The level of probability (p) (sig.2-tailed) was 0.013. It means that p (0.013) was lower than 0.05, there was a medium correlation between the students’ listening strategies and listening achievement. It can be interpreted that the seventh-grade students realize that their listening strategies was very important and influential in the listening process. The researchers concluded that the use of strategy in listening was important, because the students can perform their listening activity better and well-structured if they applied strategy in their listening process. The strategy that commonly used by the students was metacognitive strategy. Those strategies are effective in helping students in their listening process. This study succeeded in investigating the correlation between listening strategies and listening comprehension and it impacts toward the seventh-grade students of SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year 2021/2022.

Abstract

One of the texts used in daily life is procedure text which requires imperative sentences to accomplish writing procedure texts. Procedure text is one of many short functional texts in writing that should be mastered by the students in ninth grade learning English. Thus, this study aims to find out whether there was a significant correlation or not between the ability of imperative sentences and the writing skill of procedure text. The population was ninth-grade students with a total of 67 students at SMP Azhariah Palembang. For the sample of this study, the intake sampling technique was used to take the sample with 67 students. The data were obtained from students’ imperative sentence scores and their writing procedure text scores. In analyzing the data, correlation analysis was used. Based on the statistical analysis, it was found that the correlation coefficient or the r-value (0.294) was higher than the r-table (0.236). It can be concluded that there was a correlation between the ability of imperative sentences and the writing skill of procedure text. Some students had a minimum level of imperative sentence test but they were able to create good writing procedure tests. Some other factors might influence their result in the two tests such as their concentration, experience, habit in writing, etc.
