Abstract

This research aims to identify the similarities and differences between phoneme of Rantau Pandan and Rantau Duku dialect. The data collection was done by using observation technique. Furthermore, the writer applied basic technique, continuing technique, record technique and writing technique. In gaining the data, the writer uses 200 words taken from Swadesh basic vocabularies, part of bodies, verb,noun and word orderThe result of this study indicates that there are similarities and differences of phoneme between Rantau Pandan dialect and Rantau Duku dialect. Out of 200 words, 120 are pronounced similarly in both dialects. The similarities may occur because both dialects have one root, i.e. Rantau Pandan Language.Meanwhile, there are 80 words which are uttered differently in both dialects. The differences are happened in phonemic change and phonemic deletion. The phonemic changes include the alteration of vowel and consonant sounds. In Meanwhile, the phonemic deletion includes the omission of vowel, consonant, and syllable.Key Words:      Phonemes, Rantau Pandan, Rantau Duku, Dialect

Abstract

The research is the result of a study which concerned with syntactic functions of as in English. The major purpose of this research is to provide as clear as possible some related aspects concerning the syntactic functions of as in English.  This research is based on the data obtained from references written by various outstanding linguists. This research uses the theory based on Herbert (1990) which calls this kind of study a library research  and the theory related to the classification of as is adopted from Quirk (1973 and 1985). The data collection is conducted in several steps such as administrating some sentences, checking and verifying the data with the intuition of the writer herself and also with the theories given by various linguistis. All sentences given in the examples are presented in the written form without their phonetic transcription. This research report is presented in the descriptive form which qualitative in nature, and thus, the method applied in this study is following Herbert (1990) which called descriptive research.The functions of as in this research are as a subordinator to introduce complex sentences indicating adverb clauses such as adverb clause of time, adverb clause of concession or supposition, adverb clause of comparison of degree, adverb clause of comparison of manner, adverb clause of cause or reason, adverb clause of condition, adverb clause purpose, and adverb clause of result, as a preposition, as an intensifier and it may also be used in subjunctive mood. Keywords: as, syntactic function.

Abstract

This research is aimed at: 1) describing the sound correspondence set of two languages; 2) describing kinds of proto phonemes pattern in Jambi Malay  and Bungo Malay IsolectThere are three steps conducted in the research, they are collecting data, analyzing data, and presenting the result of analysis. In collecting data, the writer used observational method by applying the elicitation technique, which is continued by several techniques, i.e  facing conversation, taking note, and recording technique. In analyzing data, the writer also used qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative approach is used in order to show the sound correspondence between twi isolects. Then, the comparative method is used to compare  and determine the inheretence pattern toward two isolecst.The result of analysis are: 1) there are two of sound correspondences rules that mostly found in ultima and penultima position. namel  r ~ R /- η # /and  ə ~ ə /# b – In addition, inherited linearly, inherited with changes, and linearly with lost. The linearly inherited can be seen from some vocal of protolanguage, /*i/, /*a/, /*ə/  also consonant /*b/, /*l/, /*m/, /*p/, /*g/, /*s/, /*η/, /*k/, /*h/.Furthermore, dealing with Proto Austronesia language, it is also found that some proto phonemes are showing the alteration, namely innovation.  Key Words:      Correspondences, Proto-Austronesia, Jambi Malay, Bungo Malay

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out how the lecturers develop the learning materials for students at the Economics Faculty of Universitas Muara Bungo in the areas of students’ needs, material stimulatedness, sequencing material, authenticity and supplementary. The research is designed as qualitative study which uses interview as the techniques of the data collection. As it is a structure interview, the instrument of the research was an interview guide supported by an MP3 digital recorder in order to transcribe them later easily. There were three lecturers teaching for the subject teachers referred as teacher A, B, and C that were interviewed concerning with English learning materials. Based on the findings and discussion, the research revealed some interesting areas. Firstly, it was found the lecturers acknowledge the importance of students’ needs prior to developing the learning materials for students of English subject. One of them was the suitability of the materials with the students’ academic achievement. Secondly, the area of study was referred to how to develop the materials that are a stimulus for learning. The use of economic material became consideration. Thirdly, it seemed that the sequencing materials were neglected for several reasons. The other area of study was related to the material authenticity. The materials used for the subject was found to be less in this respect. Finally, the research also found that the supplementary materials for the subject are scarcely found in the class room.   Key words: Students’ needs, sequencing, stimulatedness, authenticity, supplementary

Abstract

Dedi Efendi, Figure of speech analysis on three poems of John Donne (Hymn to God my God, in my Sickness, A Hymn to God the Father and Death, be not Proud).The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of figure of speech and their meaning of figure of speech in three metaphysical poems. The writer analyzes the poems entitled Hymn to God my God, in my Sickness, A Hymn to God the Father and Death, be not Proud by John Donne.In this research, the writer uses qualitative research with descriptive analysis as the method of the research. He analyzes the poems by reading them intensively and giving attention to each line. After that, the writer tries to explicate the poems by examining the figure of speech and the biography of the poet.From the three poems, the writer has found eight types of figure of speech, they are: personification, metaphor, paradox, synecdoche, hyperbole, symbol, metonymy and apostrophe. The three poems have different theme, the first poem, Hymn to God my God, in my Sickness is a poem about preparation to face the death. The second poem, A Hymn to God the Father is a poem discussing about poet’s regret in his life. And the last poem Death, be not Proud is the most religious value. Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the implicature containing in blackberry messenger display picture about the rising of fuel price. The objectives of this writing are to explain  the types of implicature containing in blackberry messenger display picture about the rising of fuel price, to analyze the meaning, and to identify its pragmatic functions.This thesis applied descriptive qualitative research in which the data are obtained from blackberry messenger display picture about the rising fuel price. The data are collected by observational method supported by note-taking and interviewing  technique. Data analysis is conducted by referential identity method. The result of analysis is presented by formal and informal method.After analyzing the data, it is found that there are four types of implicature. They are (1) generalized conversational (31%) ; (2) particularized conversational ( 38%); (3) scalar (10%); and (4) conventional implicature (21%). The most commonly type found is particularized conversational implicature. This is due to the specific context in this implicature to make indirect speech. Besides,  the users of blackberry messenger can also express their ideas is to quip and humor doing. The using of specific context to saved the threatening face of hearer. The meaning of implicature shows that the users of Blackberry Messenger disagree about the rising fuel prices (93%) because they knew the effect from the rising fuel prices is burden the people to fulfill their needs in the future. There three functions of  implicature  indicated. They are (1) assertive (41%), (2) directive (7%),  and (3) expressive function (52%). Expressive function  dominantly  occurs  in blackberry messenger display picture about the rising fuel prices.This is caused by the  presentation of expressing feeling to quip. The function of the least discovered is directive function as speaker in this case does not directly provide influence through direct speech.Keywords    :implicature, display picture, rising of fuel price
