Abstract

Soft Skill-based Metacognitive Learning (SSML) and Metacognitive Learning (ML) demandthe students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their learning process and activity in solving problems. Thisstudy is a quasi-experiment with pre-test and post-test design. The aim of this research is to know the enhancement of Junior High School students’ abilities in mathematical representation ability (MRA).The population in this study is the students of Junior High School in Pekanbaru city. The sample consistof 202 students, 104 of them are from the high-level school, and 98 students are from the middle-levelschool. The instruments used in this study are mathematical prior knowledge (MPK) test, MRA test, instruction observation papers, students journal about the lesson, and the guideline for the interview. The data was analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA. The result of dataanalysis indicates that: (1) overall, the enhancement of students’ MRA with SSML and ML approachsignificantly is higher than those with conventional learning (CL); (2) there is no interaction between thelearning approach (SSML, ML, and CL) with the school level (high and middle) toward the enhancementof MRA; (3) there is an interaction between the learning approach with MPK toward the enhancementof MRA.Keywords: mathematical representation ability, soft skill-based metacognitive learning.

Abstract

Mathematical communication ability (MCA) has not been developed well, expected to beachieved through generative learning (GL). The study was quasi experiment with Postest Control GroupDesign, aims to assess student’s achievement of MCA, the subject was students of grade X of twoPublic Senior High School (upper and middle level), and one Private Senior High School (lower level)in Pekanbaru with a set of test instruments MCA. The Data were analyzed by t-test and one-wayAnova. The results of study show that achievement of average students’ of MCA as a whole throughGL 13.08 (59.45%), conventional learning (CVL) 11.11 (50.50%); upper school level through GL14.70 (66.82%), CVL 13.03 (59.23%); middle school level through GL 13.38 (60.82%), CVL 10.34(47%); and lower school level through GL 11.13 (50.59%), CVL 9.90 (45%); on high mathematicalprior knowledge (MPK) through GL 13.48 (61.27%), CVL 11 (50%); middle MPK through GL13.09 (59.50%), CVL 11.56 (52.55%); and lower MPK through GL 12.64 (57.45%), CVL 10.40(47.27%). Conclusion: the achievement of average students’ of MCA through GL was higher thanCVL; but as a whole, based on school level, or MPK group were middle. Keywords: achievement, mathematical communication ability, generative learning

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate how Pekanbaru senior high school students learnproductive language skills (speaking and writing). One of the definitions of language learning strategies isdefined by Oxford (1990b). She states that language learning strategies are specific actions taken by thelearner to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, and more efficient. The needed data were collectedby interviewing 10 selected students from five ethnic groups (Malay, Minang, Javanese, Batak, and Chinese)at various senior high schools in Pekanbaru. The respondents were asked to answer the following question:If you are asked to increase the productive language skills, what do you do? Inter-rater reliability wasused to judge the answers of related respondents in the interview by the qualified inter-raters-that aremaster’s degree in TEFL. The inter-raters modified the respondents’ responses in casual English intoacceptable written English without changing the concept of the expression. The highest frequency hasbeen acknowledged. There are a lot of strategies identified as the most-preferred strategies employed bythe respondents to increase the productive skills. The use of these strategies can be grouped into once-mentioned, twice-mentioned, and more than twice-mentioned. Examples of strategies mentioned morethan twice for improving speaking skills, preparing as much vocabulary as possible (four times); and forimproving writing skill, the strategy of writing procedurally (three times). Suggestions for further study arethose the successful learners, less successful learners, and gifted learners should also be taken into accountas crucial factors to investigate in the near future. Keywords: The Preferred Strategies, Senior High School, Productive Skill

Abstract

As professionals, teachers have an important role to play in primary, secondary, and earlychildhood education. Teacher certification as an effort to boost teacher’s qualification is also expectedto improve learning quality and quality education continuously. This study aims at investigating theimpact of teacher certification on teachers’ working performance. The Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA)was used to obtain accurate information related to pedagogic, personal, social, and professionalcompetences. The competences of both certified and uncertified teachers were measured against 78indicators, and the impact of the implementation of the government’s policy on teachers’ teachingperformance was measured using t-test. Results showed that overall there is a difference betweencertified and uncertified teachers. However, in terms of both junior and senior high school teachers’pedagogic and professional competences, no difference was found. Statistical tests showed that thereis no difference in working performance between certified and uncertified teachers.Key words: Certification, teachers’ working performance, policy implementation

Abstract

Student is interest in learning hasn’t reached the National Education Standard goal andpurposes. Students intended to be passive and less creative in way to find their own concept of easylearning and towards the concept of studying it self. The research model of cooperative learning typeSTAD has been done for 2 cycles with 5 time meetings in class X.3. In every meeting study groupapplied then each group presented their material one by one to be proceed to quizzes. One cyclesclosed with daily review. Before treatment only 14 student out of 31 student in class X.3 who areeligible in KKM standard. After cooperative learning method type STAD has applied the students whofulfilled the KKM standard rose into 20 student during first cycle and added into 22 student for cycle 2.This model of learning has contributed to the increasing of the score even though percentage does not yet climb to 85% (45,16% before treatment, 64,52% first cycle, 70,97% second cycle). Roughlyscore for UH 1 (7,33), UH2 (7,99). The average students score for cycle one is 7,20 and 8,07 forcycle two. Student has not yet in a state of brave to communicate their minds meanwhile the rest ofcategories are fine yet excellent.Key Words : Applied Cooperative Learning, Biology, and Result of Study
