Abstract

Language plays a crucial role in life, one of the roles of language is to communicate ideas to others. Language skills are the basic element for everyone to express themselves in the form of feelings, desires, opinions and needs of each individual. The more languages ​​a person knows, the easier it will to communicate, one of them is learning English. Understanding of English must be strengthened to rising generation especially students, due to globalization which requires society to speak English. For Indonesian, the use of English is still an obstacle due to a lack of understanding of the meaning of the language itself, students must be able to write and pronounce English words with different spellings. This complexity makes students or children less interested in learning English. The development of tourism in Bali is growing swiftly, this can be proven by the increasing number of visits by local and foreign tourists. To expand interaction, then must be able to master foreign languages, one of them is English. It is realized that the ability to speak English is crucial in the field of tourism, so it is necessary to prepare provisions for children to be able to communicate using English. Based on this, the Master of Linguistics of Warmadewa University through its Community Service activities held training in the form of teaching English about obstacles in learning English and how to overcome them. This study was designed to determine the obstacles to learning English for children and to increase students' interest in learning English. This research used a case study research type. Technique of collecting data in groups, namely asking about the problems experienced when learning English. The results of this study are that community service activities run well and structured in order to find solutions to the main problems, that is knowing the obstacles in learning English and how to overcome them.

Abstract

Learning English is still quite difficult, especially among junior high school students. Learning difficulties due to the lack of motivation to learn, infrastructure, learning materials and environment. The difficulty often faced by students is about pronunciation or speaking ability. The atmosphere of the Covid-19 pandemic is a major problem in the implementation of teaching because learning is carried out online and this is a new challenge for students and educators, therefore to increase learning interest for students, learning is still designed as well as possible so that students are able to participate in learning. Based on the phenomenon, the Master of linguistics at Warmadewa University takes part through community service activities by holding training programs in the form of online learning about how to speak English so that students have high motivation even in a pandemic situation. This is done with the aim of assisting students in improving their English language skills of Swastika students located in Badung District which is not far from the Warmadewa University. The four language skills that help students learn a language are writing, reading, listening and speaking. This study was designed using qualitative research with the FGD method. This study aims to explain the difficulty of English among junior high school level students.

Abstract

Warmadewa University has had a significant transformation to its surrounding which used to be agricultural land, currently this land is occupied by several traders who offer their products and services especially on Akasia street. There are differences when viewing from an economic point of view before the pandemic which has been going on for the last few months which has caused a drastic decline in turnover of traders around the Warmadewa University. Based on the visions and missions of Warmadewa University to increase the quantity and quality of the community service that is the prosperity of the traders. Then, the solutions that can be offered is to apply the method, namely the socialization of advertising languages to attract consumers through print and online media with the hope of a revival of the economy for traders in the midst of this pandemic. The results of this study prove that Community Service Activities with the target of the traders at Akasia Street have gotten better by increasing partners' knowledge in promotional strategy by applying adveritising language through print media such as distributing printed and online media such as distribution of product/service advertising banners in the form of education in the use of advertising language in social media accounts such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.

Abstract

Language has been the target of studies by experts, scholars, researchers and writers in the field of language to reveal various things related to it. One issue that has often been under the highlight is language skills. As widely known, language skills are determined by two general skills, namely receptive and productive skills. Receptive skills consist of listening and reading, while productive skills consist of speaking and writing. Unfortunately, not all of the suggested findings can help foreign language learners to master it completely. Therefore, this study published in this report is the result of the implementation of Community Service activities carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic by using Zoom. Based on the results of this community service activity, this report recommends several strategies for improving language skills. This study begins with reviewing existing theories provided by experts and continued by exploring them through exploratory qualitative studies. The data in this study were collected through a literature study of language theories and language skills and strategies to improve them. The data were analyzed by sorting out theories about appropriate strategies to improve language skills separately and to improve all language skills. The result of the study shows that productive and receptive skills are better improved through routine and repetitive exercises, including communicating with ourself and others. Listening to music is an effective way to improve listening skills. Learners must be able to find a learning stimulus through the use of various electronic and online media as well. To strengthen this, teachers must combine various strategies in teaching one language skill so that students are able understand learning easily.

Abstract

Teaching formal language is very important for children. In general, each person has the ability to acquire the first language, that is mother tongue based on the environt. It greatly influences person to tend to use informal language. The language learning can be divided into two, namely the in the classroom and outside of it. A teacher has a big responsibility for language development, especially for the development of students' language knowledge, especially English. The formulation of the problem in this study is how to improve students' understanding of the use of formal and informal English and to know the function of the two types of language. Therefore, a teacher should be able to provide a good understanding of the use of formal and informal language in accordance with certain situations. Based on the survey results, it was known that there were still many mistakes in the use of formal and informal English that were incompatible with the function and situation of using the two types of language both in spoken and written language. This research was designed using qualitative research with descriptive methods. This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the students' ability to use formal and informal English. The results shows that there is an increase in understanding the use of both formal and informal types of English.
