Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning behind verbal, non-verbal sign, and ideological contained in advertisements written in Balinese-language. This study applied a critical descriptive approach. Eleven Balinese-language advertisements are the study data obtained from the field-observation and analyzed qualitatively by using semiotics, semantics and ideology theories. The results showed that the emergence of grammatical adjective category jaen dominated all culinary data used in this study. Jaen (delicious) is a taste to express food culinary production. There are two advertisements that use the word Jaen metaphorically, such as an expression for orgasmic activity in sexual intercourse, which is contextually understandable. Furthermore, certain verbs used are quite varied and contained a different ideology. Based on the sentence structure, all the study samples used simple sentences and an imperative sentence. There is no rhetorical device in the whole advertisements, but the ideology that stands out is to prioritize local content to persuade consumers.

Abstract

The aristocratic names in South Nias differ from the proper names generally. Instead, it used common nouns to describe name bearers, which are influenced by the language, social, and cultural factors of South Nias. This research was conducted in Öri Maniamölö, South Nias, focusing on four sample villages as members of a group of villages in Öri Maniamölö: Bawömataluo, Hilinawaö Fau, Botohilitanö, and Hilisimaetanö villages. The results of the analysis revealed that aristocratic names in South Nias have meanings categorized into social stratification, natural aspects, instruments and tools, specific names, and human activity. Additionally, there were four functions of aristocratic names in South Nias: as the identifier of someone’s greatness and majesty, as the authority sign of the name bearer, as an identifier of family ancestry, and as the representative of the name bearer’s characteristics. Linguistically, there are four morphological processes in word formation in the data obtained, namely: 1) Prefixation which consisted of {sa-}, {s(i)-}, {so-}, {na-}, {ni-}, {da-}, {fa-}, {ma-}, {mo-}, {me-},{i-}, {te-}/{to-}. Then, 2) Circumfix, which consists of one data, namely {a-ta}, with the role of changing verbs into nouns. Next, 3) Suffixation, which consists of the suffix {-ma}, which functions as a nominalizer. The last process is 4) Reduplication that occurs in the words ‘Daro-daro’ by repeating the same word and still in the same word class as noun.

Abstract

This study examines the construction of the investigation report (BAP) by using forensic linguistics study. This study employs a qualitative approach to analyze the BAP. The primary data used consist of two copies obtained from the Regional Police Department of Southeast Sulawesi. The results show that total of 26 productive questions and 4 non-productive questions were found. The most dominant type of question used in the interrogation of the criminal case of insulting the Tolaki ethnic group is the productive closed question type, with 15 occurrences, representing approximately 46.6 percent. In addition, there were six types of presuppositions were identified as correlating with all speech events. These include existential presupposition, factual presupposition, lexical presupposition, structural presupposition, non-factual presupposition, and temporal clause presupposition. The most dominant type of presupposition found was structural presupposition, with a total of 13 occurrences. These research findings affirm that forensic linguistics plays a strategic role in evaluating the quality of investigative examinations and the evidentiary strength of the BAP. The analysis of question types and presuppositions demonstrates that language is not merely a means of communication, but a legal instrument that can influence the validity of a suspect’s statements. Accordingly, the application of forensic linguistic principles enables an objective assessment of whether a BAP is produced through examination procedures that are fair, non-misleading, and consistent with legal standards of proof.

Abstract

This study examines the ecolexicon of tuo (palm wine) in the Nias language as a reflection of the close relationship between language, environment, and culture in Nias Island, Indonesia. This stud employs qualitative approach to analyze the data. All data were collected in Nias Regency and Gunungsitoli City through observations and interviews with sap tappers and tuo consumers, and other documents such as dictionaries, books, article related study were used as supporting data. The analysis applies the grammatical framework of Bundasgaard (2000)   (2000) to classify tuo lexical items into grammatical categories and to interpret their cultural and ecological meanings. The findings reveal 61 tuo lexical items in the Nias language. These include 19 lexical items for types of tuo, 26 lexical items referring to its natural sources (particularly coconut and aren palm), and 39 lexical items related to tools and the management of tuo. Grammatically, the ecolexicon consists of seven nouns, nineteen verbs, and eight adjectives that describe the qualities, processes, and functions of tuo in daily life. The study also shows that tuo lexical items are embedded in Nias proverbs and song lyrics, which encode moral teachings, social norms, and communal values such as self-control, solidarity, prudence, and respect for others. Overall, the tuo ecolexicon functions not only as a linguistic resource but also as a carrier of cultural identity and ecological knowledge. The study underscores the urgency of documenting and preserving this ecolexicon in the face of modernization and the declining use of traditional vocabulary among younger generations.

Abstract

Indigenous medicinal plant knowledge constitutes a crucial component of ecolinguistic systems, as it is embedded in linguistic expressions that reflect ecological relationships, healing practices, and cultural values. However, this knowledge is increasingly threatened by language shift and insufficient documentation, particularly within low-resource indigenous communities. This study develops an AI-based ecolinguistic framework to systematically document and represent Nias ethnomedicinal knowledge by integrating ethnobotanical field data with culturally grounded artificial intelligence approaches. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with traditional Nias healers, resulting in the identification of fifteen commonly used medicinal plant species. To assess cultural salience and communal consensus, the study applied the Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC) index. The quantitative findings reveal an uneven distribution of cultural prominence among the documented species. Notably, Gundre and Mbulu Nazalöu emerged as the most frequently cited plants (FC = 14; RFC = 0.93 each), indicating their central role within the Nias ethnomedical knowledge system. The documented knowledge was subsequently structured using a Knowledge Graph model and enhanced through a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture to enable contextualized, culturally sensitive knowledge representation. The proposed framework demonstrates how artificial intelligence can support the preservation, organization, and revitalization of endangered indigenous medicinal knowledge while maintaining its ecolinguistic integrity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the speech act functions found in the “Critical Eleven” film and reveal the conversational implicatures used by the film actors. To actualise this aims, this study was conducted using qualitative research designs and by making the speech act theory of (Levinson, 1983) and the speech act function theory of Searle (1979) as the basis for examining the speech act functions in the said film according to its type. The data were collected using the simak method, a method similar to observation one accompanied by an act of scrutinizing speeches of the actors in the film “Critical Eleven”. The oral data were collected from the conversations then transcribed into written data. The data analysis result are presented informally or descriptively. The results of data analysis showed there are five speech act functions in the film, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The representative function is manifested in the act of giving witness, acknowledging, and stating. The directive one includes the act of asking, and urging. Commissive function includes expressing abilities and promising. Expressive function includes blaming, praising, and congratulating. Declarative function is manifested in the act of prohibiting. Examining the function and meaning of speech acts in the film “Critical Eleven” from the perspective of sociolinguistics is an important topic to raise in further research.
