Abstract

Introduction: Dental plaques form a biofilm, stick to the surface of the teeth or other hard surfaces in the oral cavity such as dentures or restorations. One of the factors that affect the growth of plaque is salivary acidity (pH). The low pH causes demineralization of dental elements quickly and also affects bacterial colonization. This study aims to study the relationship of salivary acidity (pH) to plaque index in students of Junior High School 3, East Selemadeg, Tabanan. Method: This study used an observational analytic design using cross sectional. The sampling location in this study was in Gadungan Village, Selemadeg Timur District, Tabanan. Plaque index and pH measurement was carried out on 75 male and female students. Result: Based on the results of the study, the Spearman ranking analysis shows a significants relationship (p < 0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.714** Conclusion: a significant and strong correlation between salivary acidity (pH) and the plaque index.

Abstract

Introduction: Heat-cured acrylic resin-based dentures has a characteristic which made it prone to pore formation, which facilitates Candida contamination. Improper denture maintenance can lead to overgrowth of Candida albicans on heat-cured acrylic resin plates and cause denture stomatitis which can be prevented by cleaning dentures using a denture cleanser regularly. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of arum sweet mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) extract in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans on heat-cured acrylic resin plates. Method: This study used a true experimental laboratory post-test only control group design with 30 samples of heat-cured acrylic resin plates that were contaminated with Candida albicans. There were six treatment groups, which were divided into positive control group (Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%), negative control (sterile aquades), 65%, 75%, 85%, and 100% of arum sweet mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) extracts. A total of 5 plate samples were soaked in each treatment group for 15 minutes, then Candida was aborted using a vortex, dilution, spreading, and culture methods were carried out on SDA media furthermore observed fungal colonies after incubation. Result: The results showed that there were significant differences between the treatment groups (P<0,05). The extract group with the lowest fungal number was at a concentration of 75% and the highest was at 100%. Conclusion: In conclusion, arum sweet mango leaves (Mangifera indica L.) extract was effective in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans on heat-cured acrylic resin plates with an optimal concentration of 75%.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia has a particularly high prevalence of caries and only 10,2% of Indonesian have access to dental professionals. Children with special needs are often vulnerable due to dependency on their parents. Parents’ roles are important for children with special needs. In Gianyar, Bali, there are very limited data assessing caries experience in special needs children and their parents’ influence on it. Therefore, it is important to know parents’ levels of knowledge, attitude, and behaviour regarding caries risk for their children. Method: This research was conducted using a descriptive quantitative with cross-sectional approach. 110 parents of special needs children were interviewed with a questionnaire. Result: More than half of the parents with special needs children had a good level of knowledge, 28,20% had moderate and 3,60% had a poor level of knowledge about caries risk in their children with special needs. Parents’ level of attitude split into two groups: 72,20% had good and 27,30% had moderate levels of attitude towards caries risk. There are no parents with poor attitude found in this research. Lastly, parents’ level of behaviour about caries risk split into two main groups: 58,20% had favourable, while 39,10% had moderate behaviour regarding caries risk. Only 2,70% of the parents have unfavourable behaviour. Conclusion: Majority of the parents with special needs children had good level of knowledge and the parents’ level of attitude regarding caries risk also tend to be good. Parents’ level of behaviour was splitted into two major category which are favourable and moderate.
