Abstract

Gestation is a stressful state that involved physiological change. Environmental stressor could alter the adaptive mechanism during gestation, thus bring bad impact to the developing fetus. Music is commonly used as a therapy media to minimize stress during gestation. This research aims to examine the effect of listening murottal and rock music during gestation towards levels of oxidative stress in mouse dams (Mus musculus) and the morphological structure of the fetuses. The levels of oxidative stress were analyzed by measuring malondialdehyde (MDA) level as the biomarker. This research was conducted from July to November 2016 in Zoology Laboratory and Chemical Laboratory of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Tanjungpura University Pontianak. Fifteen mice were divided into 2 experimental groups (murottal/M and rock/R) and 1 control group (K). During day 0 to day 15 of gestation, the pregnant mouse dams in group M and R were exposed to murottal and rock music, respectively. Laparatomy was conducted on the 16th day of gestation, followed by serum MDA measurements and observing the fetuses. According to the result, MDA level in group M was significantly lower (0.42±0.21 nmol/mL; p<0.05) than two other groups. This result accompanied by the normal fetuses with highest mean of weight (0.74±0.05 g) and length (18.72±0.90 mm) compared to fetuses from group R and K. Fetus with hemorrhage and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) were found in group R, while intrauterine mortality was found in group R and K.

Abstract

Salinity increase may effect the growths of several plants, for example (Bruguiera cylindrica (L.) BI.). This research aims to identify the growth of white mangrove seedling (B. cylindrica) on different salinity levels. Additionally, it attempts to recognise salinity that could be tolerated by white mangrove seedling (B. cylindrica). This research was conducted since Oktober to December 2016. It used Completely Randomised Design (RAL) consisting of six (6) treatments, namely control, NaCl 2,5% (S1) treatment, 3% (S2) treatment, 3,5% (S3) treatment, 4% (S4) treatment and 4,5% (S5) treatment. The result showed that NaCl treatments gave a clear effect toward seedling heights, leaf area, root lengths, wet crown weights, dry crown and root weights and chlorophyll content. However, such treatments appeared not to give an effect toward wet root weights. NaCl treatments started to effect growths with the fall of seedling heights, leaf area and root lengths at concentration of 3% and at 4% toward wet crown weights and dry crown and root weights. Meanwhile, the effect toward chlorophyll content was at concentration of 4,5%. Salinity which could be tolerated by B. cylindrica growth stood around 2,5% (25‰) – 3,5% (35‰) and 4% (40‰) for chlorophyll content.

Abstract

Community structure can be reviewed from its species composition, species density, species evenness, species diversity, species dominance, and species biomass in an ecosystem. Earthworms have an important role in decomposition process of organic matters. The existence of earthworms can be considered as a bioindicator of soil productivity. A research about community structure of earthworms in Mega Timur Village forest area had been conducted in August 2016. This research aims to know the community structure of earthworms (class Oligochaeta) that are found in Mega Timur Village forest area as well as the condition of their habitat. Plot sampling was taken randomly with 5 plots whose size is 5x5m2 on every location. The sampling method used was quadrate method with size 30x30cm2, taking 5 spots on each location and hand-sorting method. Earthworms found in the site included three genera: Pheretima, Perionyx, and Pontoscolex. The highest composition of earthworms was found in Station I and III with two genera each, and the lowest composition was found in Station II with only one genus. Genus Pontoscolex had the highest density index, while genus Pheretima had the lowest index. The highest diversity index was observed in Station III (H’=0,64), while the lowest diversity index was on Station I (H’=0).

Abstract

Sugarcane juice is a drink that is quite favored by the people in Pontianak city. However, most sellers of sugarcane juice do not pay attention to hygiene in the use of equipment, storage and processing of sugarcane juice. This can be a cause of microbial contamination in sugarcane juice. The research aims to determine the microbial contamination based on the examination of Total Plate Count (TPC) and Most Probable Number (MPN) coliform in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) juice in Pontianak city. The samples in this research were sugarcane juice drinks without ice taken each 10% of the total sellers randomly in every district in the city of Pontianak. This is a descriptive study using TPC and MPN coliform methods, and supporting data such as temperature, humidity and hygiene factor. The results of the 30 samples tested showed the average TPC ranging from 2,4 x 104 to 1,7 x 105 CFU/ml and the avarage value of MPN coliform was >1100 CFU /ml. The values exceeding the threshold value of microbial contamination in juice drinks based on SNI 3719: 2014 in which for TPC the maximum is 1 x 104 CFU/ml, and for MPN coliform the maximum is 20 CFU/ml
