This study deals with the improving students’ achievement in reading narrative text by using reciprocal teaching. The research of this study was conducted by using action research. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students SMA Negeri 6 Medan. One class was taken as the subject, namely the students from X-5. There were 49 students, consisting of 22 male and 27 female. This research was done in two cycles; there was three meetings in cycle I and three meetings in cycle II. The instruments for collecting data were reading narrative text (25 items of multiple choice tests) teacher make test as quantitative data and interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes as qualitative data. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the treatment I was 61.79, for the treatment II was 72.24 and treatment III was 81.71. The data showed that the students’ score was rising in every treatment. The conclusion is that the use of reciprocal teaching method can improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It suggested to English teacher to apply reciprocal teaching method in teaching reading comprehension. Key words: reading, narrative text, reciprocal teaching.

This study concerns with improvement of students’ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students’ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students’ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students’ achievement in writing recount text. This study deals with the improvement of students’ writing achievement through focus group discussion method. The objective of this study is to find out whether students’ writing achievement will be improved through focus group discussion method. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this research was class VIII-4 SMPN. 2 Tanjung Pura. The number of the students was 36 students which consist of 18 male students and 18 female students. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted three meetings. The instrument for collecting the data were quantitative data (writing test ) and qualitative data ( observation sheet, interview and field note). Based on the analysis, students’ achievement kept improving in every test. Key Words : Writing, Recount, Focus Group Discussion.

This study focuses on the improvement of students’ reading comprehension achievement in narrative text through Experience-Text-Relationship (ETR) Method. This study deals with classroom action research which was done in 6 meetings. The subject of this study was the second grade of SMP N 41 Medan, class VIII5. One class is totally taken as the subject of this study. The number of the sample is 34 students. The data of this study were obtained from the reading test, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the analysis data, it was found that the students’ achievement improved from the orientation test, test cycle I, and test cycle II. The findings of this study indicated that Experience- Text- Relationship (ETR) Method improved the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The students’ mean scores showed significant improvement, the mean of Cycle I = 64, 38 and the mean of Cycle II = 77, 20. The study aims at improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension applying Metacognition Method by conducting classroom action research. The population of this research twelfth grade students of SMP Negeri 41 Medan. The number of the students was 33 students. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was objective test of reading comprehension, while the instruments for qualitative data were gathered through interview, diary notes, and observation sheet. The qualitative showed that the students were interested in Metacognition Method. Based on the data analysis, the mean of the students score for orientation test was 52, 12 and for test in cycle I was 63, 63 and for test in cycle II was 76, 51. The conclusion is that Metacognition Method can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Keywords : Reading, Comprehension, Metacognition Method

This paper discusses improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension through the application of language experience approach. This paper will answer the question “Does the application of Language Experience Approach improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension?” The objective of the study is aimed at finding out whether the application of Language Experience Approach improves the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The sample of the research was the second grade students of SMA Panca Budi Medan, class XI – 2 science which consisted of 39 students, 19 boys and 20 girls. The technique of collecting data was by using three tests with two cycles in action research. The result showed that the application of language experience approach improved the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Key Words: Reading Comprehension, Language Experience Approach

This research attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text by using Dictogloss Technique. The result showed the improvement of students’ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. It was found that the mean of the students’ scores in every test was improved. In the first test, the mean was 38.7 and there was 2.3% of the students who got up 75 points (Minimum Completeness Criteria), in the second test, it was 65.1 and 19.04% of the students who got up 75 points, and in the last one, the mean was 79.4 and there was 73.8% of the students who got up 75 points. The students felt enthusiastic, enjoyable, and active in teaching learning process through Dictogloss Technique. The result of the research showed the progress of achievement scores, it can be concluded that Dictogloss Technique gives contribution to improve students’ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. Students’ achievement in writing descriptive text is very low, in this study Realia was applied to solve the problem. Action research in conducted for the result and the technique to collect the data, qualitative and quantitative are applied in this research. The subject of this research is grade VII in Junior High School (SMP N 2 ) Kisaran. In the first evaluation (66, 2926) increased to the mean of second evaluation (76, 7560) and the mean of third evaluation (87, 0243). Observation result showed that the students gave their good attitudes and responses during teaching and learning process by applying the application of Realia. Questionnaire and interview report showed that students agree that the application of Realia had helped them in writing descriptive text. It can be conclude that the students’ achievement is improved when thay are tought through Realia. Key Words: Achievement, Writing, Descriptive Text and Realia

This study aims at investigating the effect of using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the tenth grade of SMA SWASTA SULTAN ISKANDAR MUDA MEDAN. The total number of the population was one hundred sixty students in 6 classes. There were sixty students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using CTL Method and control group was taught without using CTL Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there is a significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on students’ achievement in writing recount text. This study was aimed to find out the effect of PQRST Method on students’ reading comprehension. There were sixty students, then they divided into two groups namely experimental and control group. The control was taught by conventional method while experimental group was taught by PQRST Method. The researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-21) formula to obtain the reliability of the test.. The calculation showed the reliability was 0.91 (high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation showed t-observed (2.80) is higher than t-table (2.000) at the level of significance (µ) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, null hypothesis (ha) is accepted. It means that PQRST Method has significantly affects students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. Key words: PQRST Method, Reading Comprehension.
