Abstract

This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the types and levels of questions available in the third grade of senior high school. The purpose of the analysis was to determine the distribution of the questions over the six levels of the new version of Bloom's Taxonomy of the cognitive domain. The sample of the study consisted of the English textbooks where the researcher analyzed (144) questions. The results revealed the following: for remembering - understanding (20%), analyzing - applying (55%) evaluating (15%) and creating (10%). The proportion of regulation by the ministry of education and culture shows remembering – understanding level is 20%, whereas in the distribution of cognitive domain in data analysis shows remembering – understanding is 70.7%, applying – analyzing is 55%, whereas in the distribution of cognitive domain in data analysis shows applying – analyzing is 21.4%, evaluating is 15%, whereas in the distribution of cognitive domain in data analysis shows evaluating is 2.4%, and creating 10%, whereas in the distribution of cognitive domain in data analysis shows creating is 5.5%. Based on the data above it clearly shows the significant differences between proportion of regulation by ministry of education and culture with the result of the data analysis in English textbook for third grade of senior high school is inappropriate with the regulation by ministry of education and culture.Keywords : English Textbook, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Reading Comprehension Question

Abstract

Learning English is one of the important things for students to acquire English well. Many students are still confused to choose what are the strategies that appropriate for them. Several strategies can be used for students to get higher achievement. Meanwhile, students have individual characteristics related to their learning processes, the used of the strategies will give big impact for their achievement. Students whose have high achievement also have their own strategies in their learning process. This is why this research interesting. The objective of the study was known what are the learning strategies used by high achievement students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. By using questioner and interviewed which is adopted from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 (ESL/EFL) by Oxford (1990) translated into Bahasa Indonesia to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding. The study's result was based on the answers using yes/no questions to determine whether students used direct or indirect strategies, from the interview session followed by the three high achiever students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. The first students tend to used memory, metacognitive and compensation strategies as the main strategies. The second high achievers employed cognitive, metacognitive, and compensation strategies as the main strategies in learning English. Meanwhile, the third used memory, cognitive and social strategy as the main strategies. The data showed the students combined all strategies in the learning process and used three strategies as the main strategy.Keywords : English, Learning Strategies, Achievement.

Abstract

This study was aimed to analyzing how the teacher apply the scientific approach in teaching reading comprehension for the tenth grade students of SMA PABA Binjai and to find out the difficulties faced by the English teacher in teaching learning process using scientific approach in 2013 curriculum. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design. The data sources of the research were the English teacher of SMA PABA Binjai. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. The findings showed that there was only one step of Scientific Approaches used in teaching process. Afterward, that was three difficulties faced by the teacher related to the application of 2013 Curriculum; (a) teacher faced difficulties in student’s readiness. Students were not actively participated in the classroom; (b) teacher faced difficulties in the assessment, (c) teacher faced difficulties in the steps of Scientific Approach could not apply in one meeting. The teacher was not able to manage the time when using the scientific approach. All teachers must be prepared by the government by giving them some teaching practice and training related to the application of 2013 Curriculum.Keywords: Scientific Approach, Teaching Reading Comprehension, 2013 Curriculum.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop authentic E-learning listening materials of narrative text based on local folklore for the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, materials development, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting an interview with the English teacher, and distributing the students' needs analysis questionnaires to X MIA 4 consists of 27 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needed authentic E-learning listening materials based on local folklore. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which scored 3.52 and 4.79 on average. The scores approved that the authentic E-learning listening materials based on local folklore were valid and very valid to use for the tenth-grade students in SMA Plus Sedayu Nusantara. Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop digital Eyewitness game as a media to teach writing recount text for the tenth grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Perbaungan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials and media, validating, revising (final product). The subject of the study was tenth grade students and the English teacher in SMAN 1 Perbaungan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaires to X MIA 1 consisting of 35 students to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needed digital game as a media. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts with the average scores of 92 and 100, it shows that the digital Eyewitness game is valid and suitable to be used for grade tenth students in SMAN 1 Perbaungan. Abstract

Writing is very important and most required in academic field. Students Writing is the process of describing a language so that the message conveyed by the writer can be understood by the reader. Kingston (2002:3) state that student’s achievement in learning English is only measured by the productive skills, especially the writing performance. Writing is one way to express ideas, experiences and feelings in written form. This study aims to determine the difficulties experienced by students when writing recount text in junior high schools. This research was conducted by analyzing students dffculties in recount text according to the theory of Heong et al. (2012) and the factor of students difficulties by Zaenudin (2015: 10) state that these factors include: (a) their lack of fluency in issuing ideas using English. (b) they are not accustomed to using English in daily communication, (c) lack of understanding of students about the generic struscture and language feature, (d) lack of their ability to think abstractly. Data sources were two eighth grade students in one school. Junior High School (SMP) in Sidikalang, Indonesia. Data collection techniques by observation and interviews. The data analysis technique is descriptive analysis. The data obtained will be analyzed using the analysis procedure by Flower and Hayes (1981). According to Flower and Hayes (1981), cognitive process analysis to gather student protocols will be given the opportunity to write recount texts with different themes and then ask them to write out loud near the tape recorder, and ask students to think and write, they are asked to say everything that comes to their mind as they write, including distorted ideas, false starts, and incomplete or fragmented thinking. writers are not asked to get involved or analyze themselves when writing, but only to think hard when writing like people who talk to themselves. The findings obtained are: difficulties experienced by students, namely difficulty generating ideas and difficulty organizing ideas, and the factors that influence these difficulties are students' lack of understanding of themes, language features and general structures, b. Students are not fluent in expressing ideas using English, Students are not used to using English in daily communication, d. Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop reading worksheet based on taskbased language teaching to teach students’ reading comprehension for tenth grade students at sma negeri 3 medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, materials development, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth-grade students in SMA Negeri 3 Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting an interview with the English teacher, and distributing the students' needs analysis questionnaires to X MIA 2 consists of 35 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results proved that the students needed reading worksheet based on task-based language teaching. The developed reading worksheets were validated by two experts which scored 3.77 and 3.87 on average. The scores approved that the reading worksheet based on task-based language teaching were very valid and suitable to use for the tenth-grade students in SMA Negeri 3 Medan. Abstract

This study aims to develop media of teaching speaking to 10th Grade at SMA Gajah Mada developed by using Jenga. The research was conducted by using developmental research, the research will be used to develop new products and procedures. This study was conducted through six phases of Research and Development (R&D) design; data collection and data collection, data analysis, material design, expert validation, revision, and final product. The data were gathered by conducting an interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 22 respondents to get the students’ needs. The results of the interview and questionnaire indicate that students need English-speaking media that can inspire and enable students to speak English actively. The board game and other Jenga equipment such as blocks, dice, and cards were the result of the product. Experts have validated the products. It can be inferred that the media was valid with the maximum score was 140 for the excellent result. The results showed 92.1% or 129 from the first validator and 90% or 126 from the second validator, and it was classified as important, appropriate and possible to use as learning media for students.Keywords: Jenga for Teaching Speaking, Speaking Media, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

This study deals with media in learning English especially reading descriptive text for the seventh-grade students. The objective of the study were to develop a Scramble Game using ClassDojo as a media in learning English especially descriptive text for junior high school. This study was conducted by research and development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo as media in descriptive text, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was the seventh-grade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan. The instruments for collecting data were questionnaire and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to the seventh-grade students to get the students’ needs. The evaluators of the developed media were two experts namely an English lecturer and English teacher. The findings show that Scramble Game Using ClassDojo was able to be developed into media in learning English using the research method and needs analysis. The result of the research was the Scramble Game media that the teacher can use as the learning media of descriptive text for the seventh-grade students of junior high school. The developed media have been validated by experts. The total of validation score from the Expert I and Expert II are 91.8% so it was categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing Scramble Game Using ClassDojo are appropriate as media in reading descriptive text and can be used for the seventhgrade students of SMP Dharma Pancasila Medan in learning English especially descriptive text.Key Words: Research and Development (R&D), Reading, Media, Descriptive Text, Scramble Game, ClassDojo.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop English reading materials based on the students of Software Engineering needs for the eleventh grade students at SMKN 9 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials, validating, revising (final product). The subject of the study was grade eleventh of SMKN 9 Medan. The data were gathered by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to XI RPL 3 consists of 24 students to get the students’ need. To collect the data of the research, conducting interview to English teacher and two types of questionnaires were used as the instruments. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which are the average scores for the analytical exposition material (4.65 and 4.7) and for the explanation text (4.65 and 4.6) show that the reading materials are valid and suitable to use for the eleventh grade students of software engineering program. Based on the results of the expert judgment, the developed materials were considered appropriate, which was very good.Key words: Development, Reading Materials, Software Engineering.
