Abstract

This study deals with the effect of Contextual Guessing Technique (CGT) on students’ reading comprehension achievement in descriptive text. The problem of the study is to find out whether Contextual guessing Technique significantly affects students’ achievement in reading descriptive text or not. This study was conducted by using experimental design. The population of the study was the students of eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Perbaungan in academic years 2014/2015, there were 5 parallel classes of grade VIII. There were two classes selected to be sample. The experimental group (VIII-2) was taught by using CGT, while the control group was taught by applying conventional technique. The data of the study was obtained from the students’ scores of reading test. There were two kinds of test used in this study. They were pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by applying t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showed that t-observed (2,322) was higher than t-table (2,024) (t-observed > t-table) at the level of significance of p=0,05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 38. Thus, it can be concluded that applying CGT significantly affects students’ achievement in reading descriptive text, or in other words, the null hypothesis is rejected; therefore, the alternative hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

This research is aimed to develop a good realia as a media, easy to be learnt, and can be used for teaching writing descriptive text. This study is developmental research uses Sugiyono’s model. The evaluator of the media are three experts. This instruments employed in this study is a questionnaire, interview, and Test (Pre-test and Post-test). The finding of the study is the quality of the developed realia media viewed from the experts is very good (87,2 %). The final product of this realia media is continued with effectiveness exam. The study takes place in MTs. Swasta Al-Jam’iyatul Wasliyah Tembung to the studens of VIII class, academic year 2016-2017. The samples are 40 students which is given a miniature of SIB monument and National monument as realia. Pre-test and Post-test were administrated to measure students’ ability in writing descriptive text before and after using realia. The scoring system was based on five aspects; they are content, organization, vocabulary, language use, mechanics. The result shows that there is an increase of students’ ability in writing descriptive text by using realia as a media. Therefore, the writer suggest to English teacher to develop realia as one of the alternative ways to increase the students’ descriptive text writing ability.

Abstract

This study aims to design English reading materials needed for students atSMK Panca Budi 2 Medan and develop English reading materials for students atSMK Panca Budi 2 Medan. The research was conducted by Research andDevelopment (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data,analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and finalproduct. It was conducted at SMK Panca Budi 2 Medan, especially grade XII. Thedata were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributingquestionnaire to 30 students to get the students’ needs. The interview andquestionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials whichcontain the appropriate knowledge or topic with the BSNP (Badan Standar NasionalPendidikan), syllabus, and students’ level. Thus, developing materials are proceduretext. The procedure texts expose the texts about clerical duties which are adjacentwith students’ life. There are 3 text provided, they are: Arranging a Business Trip,How to Document Petty Cash Slips and Arranging a Formal Meeting. The productshave been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,25 from English teacher and4,25 English lecturer. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant orappropriate for students at SMK Panca Budi 2 Medan grade XII.

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop English reading text materials about describing people, food and culinary spot based on students’ needs of Culinary Art. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The subject of this research was class X SMKN 10 Medan consisting of 32 students. The language skill was concerned on reading comprehension, particularly in descriptive text. Qualitative data consist of syllabus, lesson plan, and existing teaching materials. Instrumentation for collecting data were questionnaire, interview and existing materials. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ need in learning English in term of vocation that they have through questionnaire and interview. After the students’ need had been analyzed, the new reading materials was developed. The developed teaching materials were related to the vocation that the students had; it was culinary art. The development of materials followed six stages; those were gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new reading material, validating new reading material, revising new reading material, and final product revision. Based on the result of experts’ validation, the developing English reading text materials was equipped with adding one example in each exercise, adding the representative picture in each chapter and adding the generic structure of descriptive text on the reading text. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that developing English reading text materials is appropriate (4.32 = 86.55%) to use by the students of Culinary Art.

Abstract

This study focused on the readability of reading texts in English textbooks for grade VIII students in Medan in the academic year of 2015/2016. This study attempted to find out whether the English reading texts were appropriate or not in terms of the readability level for the target students. This study was categorized as descriptive qualitative research. The source of the data were six reading texts which consist of descriptive, recount and narrative texts selected from three English textbooks entitled English for Junior High School VIII published by Mediatama, English on Sky 2 published by Erlangga, and English in Focus published by Pusat Perbukuan Departemen Pendidikan Nasional, for grade VIII in Medan which were designed under guidance of Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP). The Dale and Chall original formula was used to analyze the data from the textbooks. The findings of the study showed that the average readability score of the six texts in English in Focus textbook was 6.0. It indicated that the reading texts in English in Focus textbook is appropriate for the eighth grade students since it’s level is for the seventh and eighth grade. The average readability score of reading texts in English on Sky and English for Junior High School VIII textbook were 5.7 and 5.5. The scores indicated that the reading texts in both English on Sky and English for Junior High School VIII textbook were too easy for the eighth grade students since the textbooks’ level was for the fifth and sixth grade.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the effect of debate technique on grade XI students’ speaking achievement. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the elepent ( XI ) grade students of MA Swasta Robitotul Istiqomah Huristak. The samples of the research were two classes which consisted of experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. They are consist of 57 students. The experimental group was taught by using Debate Technique, while the control group was taught without using Debate Technique. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of tobserved was 0,13 with the degree of freedom (df)=55 at the level of significance a(0,05) = 2,004. It means that tobserved was lower than ttable (0,13>2,004). The result of this study showed that Debate Technique was not significantly affect on students’ speaking achievement.

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of POW+TREE Strategy on students’ ability inwriting hortatory exposition text.. The problem of the study is to find out whetherPOW+TREE Strategy significantly affects students’ ability in writing hortatoryexposition text or not. This study was conducted by using experimental design.The population of the study was the students of eleventh grade of SMA Methodist8 Medan in the academic year 2015/2016, there were 3 parallel classes of gradeXI. There were two classes selected to be sample. The Experimental group (XIIPA-2) was taught by applying POW+TREE Strategy, while the Control group(XI IPA-3) was taught by applying conventional strategy. The data of the studywas obtained from the students’ scores of writing test. There were two kinds oftest used in this study. They were pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzedby applying t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the result of the study showedthat t-observed (2.338) was higher than t-table (1.994) (t-observed > t-table) at thelevel of significance of p=0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 68. It can beconcluded that applying POW+TREE strategy significantly affects students’ability in writing hortatory exposition text, or in other words, the null hypothesisis rejected , therefore the alternative hypothesis is accepted.

Abstract

This study deals with lexical density of English reading texts in the textbook of junior high school. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density of reading texts of English in Focus textbook, the text which has the highest lexical density in the reading texts, and the reason of the text which has the highest lexical density in reading texts. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were the English reading texts of English in Focus textbook for ninth grade students of junior high school published by National Education Department. The result of the analysis showed that: (1) The lexical density of procedure texts are 5.90, 5.08, 5.5, and 4.69, report texts are 5.92, 4.22, 4.06, and 3.64 and narration texts are 2.92 and 2.90. The score showed that the lexical density of eleven reading texts on English in Focus textbook for ninth grade of junior high school is categorized medium based on the Halliday’s theory. It means that the texts are not difficult, easy to understand and suitable for ninth grade students of junior high school. (2) The highest lexical density of the reading texts is report text entitled “The Chinese Influence in Indonesian Visual Art” (5.92) because of the higher number of lexical items than grammatical items, few clauses and more vocabularies of words. (3) Report text has the highest lexical density because of the high proportion of lexical items in the text and it also because of the generic structure, language features and the style of writing report text.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out whether students pay more attention to picture, get information from picture and understanding the content of the text. It was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research. The source of the data was taken from the textbook entitled English in Focus published by Nur Ilmu, Yudhistira and students’ grade VIII of SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. There are 9 classes of grade VIII which consists of 325 students, and VIII-1 was taken as the sample of this research. The data of this study were obtained from the students’ score of reading test. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the competence in predicting information through picture is very good. From 38 sample students, there were 21 students (55,3%) got very good score or can predict more than 5 details of information from the text, 15 students (39.5%) got good score or can predict less than 5 details of information from the text and only 2 students (5.2%) got bad score or predict less than 2 information. As well as their reading comprehension of the text with mean score 82.37 which is higher than the Minimal Completeness Criteria (KKM) of reading applied by SMPN 3 Percut Sei Tuan. It can be concluded that The result of this research is appropriate to the theory which claim that pictures are useful for getting students to predict what is coming next in a lesson and help the students comprehend the text easily.

Abstract

This research deals with the readability level of reading texts and the eighth gradestudents of junior high school. The objective of this research is to find out thereadability level of reading texts in English for junior high school textbook. Theresearcher used qualitative method in which the researcher describes thereadability level of reading texts in the textbook by using Gunning Fog IndexFormula. The text that will be analyze are 16 reading texts which are consists ofthree genres, 4 descriptive texts, 4 recount texts, and 8 narrative texts. They arethe whole reading texts in the English for junior high school textbook, publishedby Mediatama. Based on the analysis by using Gunning Fog Index Formula, fromtotal number 16 reading texts, 12 reading texts are in the very easy level, 1 text isin the standard level, and 3 texts are in the difficult level. In average, the texts arein the very easy level with score 7.3. It’s found based on the Gunning’s theory. Itis concluded that reading texts in English for junior high school textbook are notin the appropriate level for the eighth grade students of junior high school in SMPNegeri 3 Stabat.
