Abstract

Dozens of black people die at the hands of law enforcement every year. However, the Black Lives Matter movement and racial justice protests erupted massively in 2020 in response to the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Daniel, and many other black victims. It is not just a matter of police shooting. There is another underlying determinant that deserves a deeper investigation contributing to the big chaos last year whose impact is still being felt today. This study intends to discuss the unspoken reasons why Police brutality protests in 2020 were more tense and arousing public concern than in previous years. This study subsumed under a phenomenological study as discriminatory experiences of African-Americans become the main discussion. Further, the analysis of this qualitative study relies on the writer's interpretation. The results show that the vulnerability to the Covid-19 outbreak that began in early 2020 spread unevenly involving race and ethnicity. Black and other minority groups have suffered greater depression as cities with large black populations have become hotspots for the coronavirus and 23% of the deaths from the pandemic are black Americans. The covid-19 outbreak has aggravated the life of black Americans and is a strongly adverse determinant that plays behind the outburst of black Americans' anger at the death of their community members at the hands of police last year.

Abstract

Instagram is an application that lets users take photos and videos then share them on various social media. They also can put representative comments in those photos and videos. One interesting thing about the Instagram users' comments is they always update the new vocabulary developed in cyberspace which is then applied in the real world. In Indonesia, Instagram users also do the same, therefore many new vocabularies emerge and are used, for example, tercyduk, ngakak online, salfok, baper, etc. This research aims to find out the types of those new vocabularies based on their category and meaning, and also the use of those vocabularies. The semantic approach is used in analyzing the words because this approach focuses on finding the meaning of a word or a phrase. Therefore, after knowing the meaning, it will be easier to find out the use of each word or phrase

Abstract

Indonesian teachers and students constantly cope with reading proficiency issues. As shown in related studies, students have inadequate opportunities to read materials that they are interested in; also, they deal with insufficient vocabulary and comprehension when they should read texts in English. Therefore, Extensive Reading (henceforth ER) is one of the solutions to enhance reading competence. This study was carried out qualitatively with a reflective teaching approach to examine the implementation of digital poster projects in Extensive Reading classes in the English Education Department, Universitas Islam Indonesia. The researchers record the application of the digital poster project. It is one of the class's reading projects and assigned individually and fully digital in the second half of the first semester. It also illustrates the class's general description, the process of the digital poster project conducted in class, the scoring rubric used, and students' opinions on the project. To gain further perspective, the researchers interview randomly selected students who provide their experiences throughout the class, responses on the digital poster project, strengths and weaknesses of the project, benefits gained from completing the project, and inputs for similar projects in the following year. The study believes that a digital poster project is advantageous; nevertheless, it requires better learning enhancement.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe the implementation of TPACK framework in the Ruangguru as English online course. Descriptive qualitative was used to conduct this research. We used observation to gather our data by observing the features and the learning process in the Ruangguru including what contents are inside, what technology or media used, what methods used to deliver the material and how they related one to each other. Based on the entire result, we found that the implementation of TPACK framework in the Ruangguru looks quite appropriate based on the existing principles. Both the observation result and the questionnaire responses showed the existence of the TPACK principles in the Ruangguru even though there are some categories that still did not seem appropriate, such as the single use of lecturing method in each lesson, and the absence of practice skills. However, it was only a small part that did not match one among many TPACK principles implemented in the Ruangguru. Overall, TPACK was implemented in the Ruangguru, but there is still a big room for improvement in the future due to the frequent updates on the system and increasing additional new features.
