Abstract

Peg shape is one of the abnormalities of dental anatomy, i.e. tooth size is smaller than average and tapered shape. These peg-shaped teeth are often found in the maxillary lateral incisors and third molars. The form on the lateral incisor often causes aesthetic problems because of its anterior position. One of the treatments for peg-shaped teeth is Veneer. Case report: 26 years old woman had a peg-shaped shape on both lateral incisors. Indirect veneer aesthetic treatment was performed using Ceramage to correct the form and cover the diastema to achieve better aesthetics. Wax-up is done to see the suitability of the shape and proportion of the Veneer. Patients get a visual picture of the expected treatment results. The treatment results in Ceramage gave an excellent condition in improving the shape of the Peg-shaped incisor. The veneer colour resembles natural teeth, and the patient is satisfied with the treatment results. Ceramage can be used as a treatment option for anterior teeth with deformities. Ceramage Veneer is an alternative that can be done to improve the aesthetic appearance at a more economical cost for anterior teeth. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p121-130

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common dental disease suffered by the Indonesian population, especially elementary school children—an oral dental condition caused by various factors, including children's lack of parental knowledge. The existence of a government program through the UKGS requires screening for every child in elementary school. The Covid-19 pandemic has hampered the screening process in elementary schools because students study online at home. This study aims to conduct a telesurvey of dental caries in children and determine parents' knowledge in maintaining the health of children's oral teeth. The cross-sectional method and the questionnaire were used in this study as a measuring tool. Furthermore, dental examinations are carried out using a gadget/mobile phone uploaded to the google form. The analysis used in this study is the univariate method. The results showed that 340 elementary school students at Padasuka Health Center had the primary teeth' caries index in the medium category. The caries index of the permanent teeth was in the deficient class. The prevalence of caries in elementary school students at Padasuka Health Center is 80%. At the same time, parental awareness regarding the maintenance of children's oral health is considered in the high category. The telesurvey conducted on elementary school students at Padasuka Health Center was used as an illustration to determine the status of oral health, particularly dental caries. Hopefully, the telesurvey will make it easier for respondents and health workers to assess oral health. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p131-141

Abstract

Polyamide resin is widely used in dentistry as a denture base material. Cinnamon burmanii has been proven to have antibacterial and antifungal substances. Therefore, it is the potential to be used as a nature denture cleanser. This study aimed to examine the effect of soaking 50% cinnamon extract solution on the surface roughness of polyamide resin. This study used 16 polyamide resin samples soaked in 50% cinnamon extract solution and 16 samples soaked in distilled water as the control group. It examined the surface roughness before and after immersion for four days and seven days. Data were analyzed using paired T-test and independent T-test. The results showed a significant difference in the surface roughness of polyamide resin before and after immersion in cinnamon solution for four days and seven days. The surface roughness change is due to the polyphenol's reaction on the polyamide resin surface, which has destroyed the polymer chain of polyamide resin. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p165-174

Abstract

The failure of a root canal treatment can be caused by the facultative anaerobic bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, which should be eliminated throughout root canal irrigation. Chlorhexidine 2% is a popular antibacterial liquid used in root canal irrigation. Natural substances can also be used to make antibacterial irrigation liquids. One natural substance with antibacterial properties is lerak fruit extract (Sapindus rarak DC), containing 28 per cent of saponins, alkaloid compounds, polyphenols, antioxidant chemicals, and flavonoid groups and tannins. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of 25% lerak fruit extract (Sapindus rarak DC) against E. faecalis compared to 2% Chlorhexidine. This study is a pure experimental study using the agar diffusion method against three experimental groups chlorhexidine 2% as a positive control, lerak fruit extract (Sapindus rarak DC) as a treatment group, and aquadest as a negative control. Each group was repeated ten times on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) media which was applied using a paper disc. Then the diameter of the inhibition zone was calculated using a caliper. The results in this study, 25% lerak (Sapindus rarak DC) fruit extract had an average inhibition zone diameter of 11.775 mm, and an average inhibition zone diameter of 2% chlorhexidine was 19.745 mm. The difference in the diameter of the inhibition zone was significantly different in all groups. Conclusion ethanol extract of lerak fruit (Sapindus rarak DC) 25% can inhibit the growth of E. faecalis and can be used as an alternative to other antimicrobial agents as disinfection of root canal irrigation. Abstract

A radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst that arises from the epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament due to periapical periodontitis following death and necrosis of the pulp. A fistula may form a cyst with a pulp infection that produces pus and seeks its way out to the gingival surface to create a canal. The purpose of this case report is to report the management of a patient with a chronically infected radicular cyst with fistula while retaining the involved tooth. A case report was a 13-year-old female patient who came to Department Oral Surgery of a hospital with a complaint of a lump in the front gum and palate that didn't heal for two years ago and often discharged pus. Intraoral examination showed a lump in the gingiva and palate with fistula in the interdental gingiva of teeth 11-12 with soft consistency and pain with palpation. Panoramic results showed characteristics of the radicular cyst at the 13-11 tooth region. The lesion is diagnosed as a chronic infection of a radicular cyst due to pulp necrosis in teeth 12-11 with interdental fistulas. Biopsy enucleation of the cyst was performed with teeth preservation. The patient was advised to have regular check-ups. On the sixth month of control, the surgical wound was good, without any complaints and signs of recurrence. The result is that a radicular cyst can become chronically infected and form a fistula that oozes pus into the oral cavity. The cyst can be treated with enucleation biopsy and fistulectomy with the preservation, without any recurrences. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p209-218

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans is a microorganism that important in dental caries. Herbs are known to have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria. The rhizomes of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria are two of the eight species of genus Curcuma that are most widely used as traditional herbal medicine in Indonesia. Both rhizomes have antibacterial activity against oral bacteria at a concentration of 12.5%. This study aimed to examine the inhibitory of Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts against the growth of Streptococcus mutants. The study was in vitro study. Both rhizomes got from the Experimental Garden of Balittro Manoko Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. The maceration was employed to obtain the extracts with the final extracts of both rhizomes at a concentration of 12.5%. Antibacterial activity test was carried out by using the agar well diffusion method. The positive control group was 0.2% Chlorhexidine and distilled water as a negative control group. The data obtained were then analyzed using the One Way ANOVA Test and Post Hoc Test. Results showed that chlorhexidine 0.2% had the largest mean diameter of the inhibition zone. Curcuma longa rhizome extract had a larger mean diameter of inhibition zone compared to Curcuma zedoaria rhizome extract. However, the difference in the mean values of the two rhizomes extracts was not statistically significant. Distilled water didn't have antibacterial activity. It can be concluded that both Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria rhizomes extracts at a concentration of 12.5% have antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. Abstract

A periapical cyst is a lesion often found in dental practice. It is an odontogenic cyst of inflammatory origin with an epithelial wall originating from the epithelial rests of Malassez found in the periodontal ligament. Its high prevalence compared to other types of the odontogenic cyst and the absence of recent study of its distribution and frequency based on age, gender, tooth element, position, condition of the involved tooth, and its treatment render the need for further study. A retrospective descriptive study was done using the secondary data found in the patient's medical record. The study showed some patients with periapical cysts were at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department in the 2018-2019 period. The frequency and distribution of periapical cyst are primarily found in the third decade of life (39.1%). It found more in female patients (69.6%), more often involved maxillary lateral incisive (33.3%), mostly found at the apical of involved teeth (77.8%), involved teeth condition were more often pulp necrosis (63.0%), and endodontic treatment was the more chosen treatment (22.2%). Abstract

Immediate implant placement after extraction is a dental implant treatment procedure reported in several case studies with satisfactory results for patients and less crestal bone loss around the implant. This case report describes the method of immediate implant placement after extraction. It directs temporary crown placement in a female patient with failed post-endodontic treatment restoration on the maxillary incisor. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia, preceded by tooth extraction and socket cleaning post-extraction, followed by the implant and bone grafting procedure, then finalized by provisionalization. The immediate implant procedure is a simple and time-saving technique. No second surgery is required, such as delayed implant procedure, but the operator's good analytical, diagnostic, and planning skills in its implementation. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p142-152

Abstract

The carotid artery consists of two carotid arteries, namely the dextra communist artery and the sinistra, the main blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain, the basal ganglia, which have the function of regulating the motor functions of the body. The communal carotid arteries blocked flow can cause brain ischemia. It is due to hypoxia due to a lack of oxygen supply carried by the brain, resulting in motor body function disorders, incredible blockages in the carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain, and neurons as regulators of motor functions. The research is a literature study that has relevance to the formulation of the problem meets the criteria and research objectives to determine the effect of the length of the blockage of the arteries of the carotid artery of the communist to the motor function of the Wistar strain rats. The results of a literature review or literature studies in some previous scientific research journals indicate if the blockage of the arteries of the communal carotid arteries affects the disruption of motor function caused by hypoxia and damage to neurons and brain tissue in motor neurons. The conclusion is that the blockage and the duration of blockage of the communal carotid arteries affect motor function. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v1n2.p153-164
