Abstract

Exfoliative Cheilitis (EC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the lips, characterized by fissuring, desquamation, and the formation of a bleeding crust. EC causes a burning sensation of varying intensity and sometimes bleeding. EC has no clear etiology but is associated with bad habits such as lip licking and biting, stress or depression, and systemic disease states. The best treatment for EC is to eliminate the cause or predisposing factor. Treatment was given in the form of topical corticosteroid application and petroleum jelly. The use of corticosteroids can be discontinued if there are no complaints and to overcome the dryness of the lips it is recommended to apply petroleum jelly. One week after the treatment, there was a wound healing process, but the condition of the lips still showed redness and the patient's lips were still peeling. After one month, the patient's lips have healed, and the patient's bad habits such as licking the lips and peeling the lips have disappeared. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n1.p27-38

Abstract

Periodontal disease and caries are part of dental and oral health problems. The main cause of periodontal disease and caries is plaque. Dental plaque can be controlled with a combination of chemicals and mechanics treatment. The growth of dental plaque can be inhibited by using chemicals, namely xylitol which can be used in the form of chewing gum or toothpaste. Xylitol is a natural carbohydrate sweetener that cannot be fermented by bacteria in the oral cavity. Xylitol can accumulate Streptococcus mutans intracellularly and make Streptococcus mutans expends energy to break down accumulated xylitol without producing unfavorable energy. This research was conducted as literature study and analyzed the findings obtained. This literature review used six pieces of literature about xylitol chewing gum and two pieces of literature about xylitol toothpaste. Data analysis used Paired Samples T-Test of plaque index. The results showed that there was a statistically significant result (p<0,05) of the plaque index before and after using xylitol chewing gum. On the other hand, there was no significant result (p>0,05) on the plaque index before and after using xylitol toothpaste. The decreased plaque index was established in both of the xylitol types, but not meaningful when used in toothpaste. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n1.p75-84

Abstract

Good communication between dentists and patients will create success in the patient care process and help patients to improve their understanding of medical information, perceptions, and expectations. Interpersonal relationships between children, parents, and operators (Dentists), are part of the basic pattern of behavior management or orthodontic treatment in children. Treatment of anterior crossbite in mixed dentition is highly recommended because this malocclusion cannot be corrected with growth or age. Case Report: A 9-year-old child came with a complaint that her right upper front tooth was growing behind her lower front teeth, so she felt insecure when smiling and uncomfortable when biting. The patient's mother and the patient want a treatment that can return the teeth into a good and normal position. The patient had no history of disease either in childhood or at present. Dental history such as normal tooth eruption, premature loss, and dental trauma was denied but the patient stated that the permanent teeth had grown before the baby teeth fell out. The patient has no bad habits. In this case, education was carried out to the patient and his mother regarding the use of a tongue blade to push tooth 11 toward the labial direction to correct the palatoverted tooth 11. Conclusion: Cases of anterior crossbite in permanent teeth are quite common in children who are growing and developing, so early treatment to stimulate growth balance and occlusal development is needed to modify the growth direction to prevent further malocclusion. Abstract

Shift work is a rotating work time outside regular working hours, either rotating with the shift work method. Shift work can cause changes in metabolism, immunological status, and oxidative status that cause inflammation due to changes in circadian rhythm. Nurses, primarily female, in provide 24-hour services also have to do shift work. This study aimed to see the relationship between blood pressure and blood glucose to vascular function and aerobic capacity in female nurses working in hospitals. The research method was descriptive-analytic to know the relationship between blood pressure and glucose to blood vessel function as measured by cGMP and aerobic capacity. Through VO2max, the research sample was selected purposively with inclusion criteria of having worked as female nurses who had worked for at least six months and were aged 20-40 years. The results show that the fasting blood glucose value had more influence on the cGMP value than the MABP value (r= 0.204 vs. 0.034), although the relationship was weak and very weak. The correlation analysis between fasting Blood Glucose and VO2max and Blood Pressure with VO2max shows blood pressure is more significant than fasting Blood Glucose on VO2max (0.105 vs. 0.083) even though the correlation between the two is very weak. It may be because many other factors can influence blood vascular function and aerobic functional capacity. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n1.p1-14

Abstract

Alginate is widely used in dentistry as an impression material. Manipulation of commercial alginate impression materials with the addition of Trisodium Phosphate (TSP). It is known to prolong the setting time of alginate by reacting it first with calcium sulfate. Dental students in their first grade sometimes have difficulty manipulating alginate so they need a longer manipulation time. There is no alginate product with a longer setting time in the market. From this study, we added 2% TSP to add setting time for dental education. The purpose of this study to characterize was to determine the compressive strength of alginate molding materials that have been added with TSP to commercial alginate products with factory standards. Setting time, compressive strength, EDS, and SEM was used as a characterization. This research was true experimental research. It was conducted using normal type printed materials with one of the brands available in the market. The results of this study were then analyzed using paired T-test, the compressive strength of alginate without and without TSP 2% was a significant difference.  The addition of 2% TSP affected the compressive strength of the alginate impression material. Abstract

Thalassemia is an autosomal recessive single gene disorder due to an imbalance in the production of globin chains, namely α-globin and β-globin chains, which until now the case is increasing with manifestations of severe anemia and can have an impact on nutritional status. Malnutrition is one of the effects of thalassemia due to rapid erythrocyte turnover. The purpose of this paper is to discuss and provide information regarding the definition, epidemiology, classification, pathogenesis, diagnosis, complications, management, and nutritional status to minimize growth disorders in thalassemia patients. This research is a literature study, which is a type of research that collects, manages, uses, and reviews research data sourced from scientific research journals, previous research manuscripts, and textbooks. The results of the literature review are a factor of good nutritional status in thalassemia patients can be affected by various factors, one of which is increased energy expenditure which can offset good intake and consumption patterns. One of the assessments of nutritional status in thalassemia patients is the Upper Arm Circumference (UAC) because it can be used in organomegaly patients. Many factors can affect the nutritional status of children, especially in children with thalassemia. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n1.p39-52

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment is a treatment that induces light pressure on the teeth by using an orthodontic appliance so that the teeth move in a determined direction. Fixed orthodontic treatment must be following the instructions of an orthodontist however many unlicensed dental services and online shop sites offer free braces. Side effects can occur in patients with a fixed orthodontic appliance, but this has been minimized by dentists in the treatment process so that patients get greater benefits. Fixed orthodontic treatment by unlicensed dental services is done without any responsibility in case of an error that threatens dental health. It was reported that 22 years old woman complained that her lower anterior teeth were mobile and there was a white spot on the part where the bracket was set up. The patient wanted to remove the braces that were attached by the unlicensed dental services several years ago. Patients diagnosed with periodontitis localized of teeth 32-42 with mobility grade II et causa trauma of fixed orthodontic appliances. The dental emergencies of tooth mobility, in this case, were carried out by orthodontic bracket removal on the upper and lower teeth and followed by periodontal treatment. So that it does not cause further damage to the underlying supporting tissue and cause the tooth to extrude. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n1.p63-74

Abstract

Signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders/TMD often occur in edentulous patients. Etiology and clinical symptoms are different so the diagnosis is different. The diagnosis of TMD can be determined using Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) Axis I (clinical examination) and Axis 2 (psychological examination). The purpose of this study was to obtain a description of temporomandibular joint disorders in edentulous patients at the Dental Hospital of Padjadjaran University based on DC/TMD Axis I. This research was a descriptive study with a survey technique. The sample size was 32 patients that were collected by consecutive sampling. Temporomandibular disorders in edentulous patients were obtained by filling out symptom questionnaires and clinical examination based on DC/TMD Axis I, then grouped using the DC/TMD Axis I algorithm. The results showed that from 32 edentulous patients who visited the Dental Hospital of Padjadjaran University, there were 23 subjects diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders, with disc displacement with reduction (40.63%) as a major diagnosis, followed by local myalgia and myofascial pain in 2 subjects (6.25%) each, and arthralgia in 1 subject (3.12%). Subjects who had more than one diagnosis as many as 5 people (15.62%). According to the result of the study, most of the edentulous patients visiting the Dental Hospital of Padjadjaran University were diagnosed with temporomandibular disorders, and disc displacement with reduction was the most common diagnosis.
