Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a serious threat to public health and the economy. Several reviews suggested that working long hours has a negative effect on health, especially metabolic disorders. Objective: To determine whether long working hours increase the incidence of diabetes mellitus in non-sedentary workers. Methods: A literature search using PubMed, Scopus, and Proquest was conducted based on the clinical question. Selected studies were critically reviewed for their validity using Oxford University’s Center for Evidence-Based Medicine’s etiological study criteria.Result: Three relevant studies were found. A cohort study found that non-clerical workers and shift workers with long working hours had a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes with a Hazard Ratio (HR) of 2.28 (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.13-4.82). However, the dominant risk factor that may have influenced the outcomes could not be clearly identified. In contrast, a cross-sectional study found no significant association (p>0.05) between working overtime and diabetes prevalence among field workers. Another cross-sectional study showed that blue-collar workers with long working hours had a higher likelihood of prediabetes with an adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) of 1.54 (95% CI 1.15-2.06). However, since this is a cross-sectional study, the causal relationship is uncertain. Conclusion: Studies regarding the relationship between long working hours and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in non-sedentary workers showed inconsistent and unclear results. Further evaluation is still needed to find more evidence on the health effects of long working hours on workers.

Abstract

Background: Exposure to noise in workplace is the leading cause of increased hearing threshold and hearing loss among factory workers. There are other factors other than noise than can cause increased hearing threshold such as age, length of work, history of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, Body Mass Index and smoking habit. PT K is a company that produce heavy machinery parts for construction where workers are exposed to noise above Threshold Limit Value (TLV).Methods: A cross-sectional research of 965 employees was conducted after passing the ethical evaluation based on the 2022 medical check-up results. Samples were taken from total secondary data from the company’s medical records and data verification was done to eliminate duplication and confirm data validity. Univariate, chi-square for bivariate analyses were performed.Result: The prevalence of increased hearing threshold among workers is 39.6%. The factors that associated with the prevalence of increased hearing threshold were determined to be older age group (p<0.001), history hypertension (p=0.003), dyslipidemia (p=0.008) and overweight – obese Body Mass Index (p=0.002).Conclusion: Older age group, length of work, works departments, history of high blood pressure, dyslipidemia and overweight – obese Body Mass Index were significant risk factors associated with increased hearing threshold. The risk of increased hearing threshold is 3.2 times higher in workers above 36 years old. This indicate the importance of preparing better mitigation strategy of noise control and hearing conservation program, particularly in workers older than 36 years old.

Abstract

Introduction: The increased use of Visual Display Terminals (VDTs) allows close work with continuous screen gazing during working hours. Close work forces the eyes to accommodate resulting in contraction of the ciliary system. This sustained contraction will lead to ciliary system weakness, making close work a risk factor for premature presbyopia. Methods: The research design was cross sectional. It was conducted on employees of health centers in Bekasi district who were under 40 years old with more than 1 year of service as employees and had used VDT for at least 1 year. Employees filled out an interview form voluntarily then the answers would be verified according to presbyopia and finally measured the amplitude of accommodation for respondents who met the presbyopia criteria. The research was carried out throughout December 2023. The collected data were statistically processed using the SPSS 26 application tool. Results: Of the 100 respondents who filled out the interview form and then verified and measured, 22 people (22%) had premature presbyopia. Age (p-value 0.014), type of VDT (p-value 0.049) and habit of working with VDT for 1 hour non-stop (p-value 0.016) were associated with premature presbyopia because they had a p-value <0.05. Based on multivariate test, the factor of working with 1 hour non-stop VDT was the only factor with p-value 0.018 and OR 3.78995% CI 1.255-11.445.Conclusion: There is an association of VDT use with the incidence of premature presbyopia in office workers by 22%. With the most significant influence owned by the factor of working with VDT 1 hour non-stop.

Abstract

Breastfeeding has been shown and proved to offer numerous health benefits for infants and mothers. Despite this fact, studies have found that the level of exclusive breastfeeding continues to be low both in developed and developing countries. The issues with breastfeed and continue breastfeeding due to multiple factors, one of the biggest challenges is as a working mother. Working mothers face the challenge of balancing breastfeeding and paid work, thereby increasing the risk of early cessation of breastfeeding in general and exclusive breastfeeding. There are many studies to overcome these issues, however not many studies exposing the ethical issues, difficulties and opportunities while solving this matter. Such as moral work women undertake when engaging with breastfeeding, influenced by cultural and social norms that makes it harder for breastfeeding mother.

Abstract

Introduction: Issues related to ethics discussed in an article are currently still very limited unless the article discusses “ethical issues”. Interventions are treatments that often pose challenges related to ethics during their implementation and even afterward, one of which is intervention in the field of nutrition in the workplace. The aim of this review is to describe ethical issues in nutrition-related interventions in the workplace. Methods: We conducted a search on the PubMed Central database in November 2023 to look at various publications and journals in the last 5 years related to the ethical issue of nutritional interventions in the workplace using the keywords: nutritional interventions, ethics, workplace. Results: Total of 3 journals as literature review. The relationship between the risks and benefits of participating in research is an important aspect of the principle of beneficence. Research can be ethically acceptable if risks have been minimized (both by preventing potential harm and minimizing possible negative impacts) and the benefits of research are greater than the risks. The results illustrate the wide range of nature, types, and scope of existing public health nutrition-related interventions, and the range of ethical issues that may arise from these interventions, in addition to the many different contexts in which they may be applied. Conclusions: The results of this review describe the varying nature, types, and scope of existing (or planned) workplace nutrition-related interventions, the different contexts in which they are implemented, and the various ethical issues that may arise. Ethical issues can only be addressed by considering the complexity of each situation. it is universally agreed that all health research that includes humans as research subjects must be based on the ethical principle of respect for human dignity (respect for person), doing good (beneficence), and justice (justice)

Abstract

Introduction: Mother’s milk provides many benefits for babies. Breast milk is also one of the most complete and perfect foods for babies. Breast milk contains minerals, carbohydrates and fats in sufficient quantities to provide adequate nutrition for babies. Babies who are given breast milk can increase the baby’s resistance (immunity), thus preventing the baby from being attacked by infectious diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia, measles and others. It is highly recommended to start giving breast milk as soon as the baby is born until the age of 4-6 months. Giving breast milk to babies can also prevent babies from stunting. Stunting is defined as the condition of children aged 0-59 months, where the height for age is below minus 2 standard deviations (<-2SD) from the WHO median standard. Methods: This studied obtained from four electronics journals, that obtained from google schoolar, CORE, and MKMI journal that published in Indonesian and English languages, between March 2018 untill January 2022. Only research and original studies are inclose experimental and observational methods, and secondary data. Results: Results of research obtained showed that according to the applicable regulations, breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding for working women is permitted and almost all workplaces allow female workers to carry out these activities. The importance of providing a breast milk room in a place of work will make it easier for working mothers to provide nutrition for their infant children. Breast milk is very important for these infant children. Conclusion: The importance of breastfeeding avoids malnutrition in babies and is protected by law so there are no prohibitions on preventing it.

Abstract

Introduction: An ergonomic mathematical model to compute safe weight lift was formed with the principle of strain energy to limit the risk of low back pain among construction employees in Nigeria. However, the mutual interaction effect of the selected factors has not yet been studied. Objective: To analyze the mutual interaction effect of compounded chosen factors including biomechanical factors (body weight, spinal shrinkage, spine length), physiological factors (age, gender), and psychophysical factors (surrounding temperature, lift frequency).Method: The data were collected using ZT-160 scale, tailor tape rule, fly-back timing, and RH/Temperature pen from fifty male manual construction workers selected using purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed using Ms Excel and SPSS with multiple linear regression, regression curve estimate, and analysis of variance at an alpha level of 0.05.Result: The multiple linear regression investigation showed that the mutual interactions of the compounded masculine workers' factors were significant (p=0.00) and gave R²=0.94. The regression curve estimate predicted the existence of a quadratic relationship with the safe weight lift (p=0.00), and analysis of variance revealed that the selected factors were significant (p=0.00) with F-test=404.53.Conclusion: The mutual interactions of the selected factors were significant. Hence, it can be used for decision-making for the safety management of male laborers involved in load handling.

Abstract

Introduction: Among the many risk factors for stress in the workplace, bullying is a factor that is rarely discussed. As many as 19% of people in America experience bullying at work, followed by other European countries. Bullying is a strong link to worker stress, especially in blue-collar workers. Gender differences, especially in women, also have an important prevalence in workplace bullying. In Indonesia itself, there is no data regarding bullying in the workplace, especially among women and blue-collar workers. Objective: This study aims to find the relationship between bullying and stress in the workplace among female blue-collar workers. Method: This research is a cross-sectional analytical study using a negative act questionnaire-revised (NAQ-R) questionnaire on work stress in female blue collar workers in garment factories, in Bekasi city, Indonesia. Job stress assessment uses the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10) questionnaire. Other variables assessed are age, salary, marital status, and subjective questions related to workload and work communication. Results: A total of 379 female blue collar workers in garment factories, in the city of Bekasi, Indonesia took part in this research. Workplace bullying is associated with job stress in female blue-collar workers. Workers who are often bullied tend to have medium-high levels of work stress. Bullying is the type of bullying with the highest scale. Conclusion: Workplace bullying is the factor that has the most influence on work stress in female blue-collar workers. Then, high workloads, poor communication, and lower salaries are related to bullying and stress in the workplace.
