Abstract

Abstract This study aims to investigate student’s perception toward the use of YouTube in EFL speaking skill during online learning and to know student’s difficulties and how they solve them. This study involved 32 participants from non-English department students consisting 4 males and 28 females. To collect the data, the researcher uses open-ended questionnaire. To analyze the data, researcher used three steps, there are familiarizing and organizing, coding and reducing, and interpreting and representing the data. The result of the study shows that most of the participants have positive perception about the use of YouTube for speaking; as YouTube is helpful, affordable, and interesting platform to help them in some aspects of speaking. Some difficulties that students face while using YouTube are that they have internal and external difficulties. To solve the problem they use internet to browse, use YouTube features, and have discussion with friends and lecturer. Keywords: perception, YouTube, speaking skill, difficulties

Abstract

This study aims to describe students’ participants when the teacher implements cooperative learning in the classroom. Moreover, this study is aimed to investigate the effectiveness of cooperative learning that is used by the student to increase their ability to speak in English. This study used the qualitative method to get the data. The subject of the study is one group that consists of 5 senior high school students who are actively working in a group. The data were gathered through field notes which were used to take note of all of the information about how the teacher’s and the student's behavior in the classroom to discover the implementation of cooperative learning by the teacher. Then, the questionnaire followed by an interview session was used to get more data from the following question of the questionnaire. This research was conducted in two meetings. The finding of this study showed that cooperative learning is still not effective to implement by the teacher in the online classroom. it showed from fewer students who asked questions during the learning activity. In explaining the field note, the teacher only gives the assignment without monitoring the students’ group works. Then, students must use various media for groups working outside the online classroom that is less of teacher control. However, from the questionnaire followed by the interview, the student claimed that cooperative learning was helped them to reduce their problem of speaking. They stated that from cooperative learning, they could practice their speaking more and get feedback for the mistakes also motivation. They implement cooperative learning through virtual meeting applications and group chatting in WhatsApp features such as voice notes or video calls. The student also gives feedback and advice as a response to their participation in the cooperative learning activity. In sum, the finding of this study showed that the implementation of cooperative learning in an online class was still not suitable but, effective for students’ regular work-study. Abstract

The teaching of English in Vocational High School is supposed to use English for Specific Purposes. It used specific materials in the process of teaching. However, not all English teachers of Vocational High School in Sidoarjo are responsive in using specific materials during the teaching and learning process. This study aims to identify the contents that should be included in the English materials for the Office Administration Program based on the result of need analysis, to develop appropriate English material for the Office Administration Program and to find out the teacher’s responses toward the English materials. This study used Educational Research and Development method in which the participants were 36 students of the Eleventh Grade and the English teacher of Office Administration Program. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and material adaptation instrument. The data were analyzed qualitatively by following stages, (a) organizing and familiarizing; (b) coding and reducing; and (c) interpreting and representing. The results of this study showed that the students of the office administration program need materials that contain specific contents related to their expertise such as secretary, public relation, customer service, and more like that. They agreed that the developed materials should include specific contents such as speaking skill, conversations related to the jobs in office administration, and office administration terms. In the process of developing material, the researcher applied the result of material adaptation and the syllabus designed by the researcher. Finally, the teacher stated that the material developed by the researcher is appropriately used in the teaching and learning process since the developed material can fulfil the students’ learning needs. She stated that the use of media such as illustration, audio listening, and video can help students achieve their goals in learning English. Abstract

This article aims to present the result of the research done in finding how the implementation of Quipper School in teaching English. Besides, it also investigates the teacher’s and students’ perception towards it. The data was taken using semi-structured interview with one of the English teacher and 12 students of grade XI in academic year 2020/2021. As the result of this study, the implementation of Quipper School in teaching English seen as something good and helpful for the teacher. It provided the material and task that the teacher need so they did not need to make any. Also, both the teacher and students find out the advantages and the disadvantages in using Quipper School as the teaching and learning media.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether the implementation of English podcast in teaching and learning can enhance students’ speaking skill especially in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. There were 36 eleventh grade students from SMAN 3 Surabaya in the academic year 2020/2021 as the sample. The group was given pre-test and post-test. To collect the data, speaking tests were administered to students. The obtained data were analyzed by using paired sample t-tests. The result showed that the implementation of English podcast could enhance students’ speaking skills in eleventh grade students. SPSS Statistics was used to analyze the data, specifically by using paired sample test. The mean score of post-test was (86.33), which was higher than the mean score of pre-test (64.44). The t-test score was -24.478 and the degree of freedom (df) was 35. Accordingly, podcast was an effective and innovative technology-based learning tool in English classroom, especially in integrating speaking. Keywords: podcast, speaking skills, technology.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety was one serious problem for senior high school students. It should handle as soon as possible because it could affect students' learning process. This study aimed to describe the development process, the validation, and the practicality of the "EXIT" game as a medium to overcome senior high school students' speaking anxiety. This study followed the ADDIE approach by Branch (2009) to develop the media. This study involved fifteen senior high school students and one teacher in playing this game. Besides that, the validation score for the media was 96 that could be considered "Valid and Applicable." According to the interview result, students felt enjoy and relax while speaking in front of their friends. They did not show their speaking anxiety. They also gave positive feedback toward the "EXIT" game. Furthermore, the teacher also gave an appraisal for the game. Based on the trial result, the primary goals had met. In short, the "EXIT" game was applicable for overcoming students' speaking anxiety. Keywords: Speaking Anxiety, EXIT game, Educational Game, ADDIE

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan peer-feedback untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dan untuk mengetahui kualitas hasil siswa dalam menulis deskriptif. Penelitian ini juga mengamati bagaimana respon siswa setelah mendapat peer-feedback. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain kualitatif sebagai metodologi penelitian karena peneliti ingin mendeskripsikan hasil tulisan siswa dengan menggunakan peer-feedback. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa SMP kelas VIII. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi lapangan dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa setelah mendapatkan peer-feedback. Setelah menerapkan peer-feedback dalam penulisan deskriptif, hal itu dapat mempengaruhi siswa secara signifikan. Mereka dapat mengetahui kelemahan mereka dan dapat memberikan lebih banyak informasi untuk penulisan yang lebih baik. Terbukti dari total kemajuan data yang diperoleh peneliti, peer-feedback memang bisa memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan pada percobaan kedua. Kata kunci: peer-feedback, menulis, teks deskriptif. Abstract The aim of this study are to describe the use of peer-feedback to improve students’ writing ability and to find out the quality of students’ result in descriptive writing. The study also observed about how the response of the students after having peer-feedback. This study used qualitative designed as the research methodology since the researcher would like to describe the result of students writing by using peer-feedback. The subject of this study was 30 students of junior high school in VIII grade. The instruments used of this study were observation field and interview. The result showed that there was improvement of students’ writing after having peer-feedback. After implementing peer-feedback in descriptive writing, it could significantly affect students. They could know their weakness and could give more information for better writing. It was proven by the total of the progress of the data obtained by the researcher, peer feedback indeed could make a significant effect in the second try. Abstract

Reading is the most extensive and intensive skill. Most of learners usually read only a material book that given by government in the class. Some of learner may find the reading text is boring just by read the title. By looking at this situation, it is very important for them to read what they are interested in as a way to develop their reading interest. For example is introducing them to read Fan Fiction. This research is aimed to find out whether fan fictions effective as reading material for teaching English conducted at tenth grade of SMAN 3 Tuban. The researcher decides that this study use experimental research. The research focused on collecting numerical data to explain what was observed. The researcher decided to use Simple Random Sampling Procedure to choose the sample groups. Those groups are X MIA 1 and X MIA 2. The researcher applied Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design to both subjects and with the treatment (only for experimental class) for this study. The researcher give pre-test and treatment to the experimental class (X MIA 1), and in the end the researcher give post-test to accomplish this study. The researcher gets the data analyzed by the test in experimental class. It was analyzed by using Microsoft Office Excel in data analysis; paired sample test of t-test. The outcome of this study pointed out that there was a significant difference score between students score in experimental class that used fan fiction as material and controlled class that did not use fan fiction as reading material for tenth grade. Abstract

This study aims to determine how teachers apply Oral Communication using PBL to help students develop their speaking skills. This study uses the qualitative method. Twelve vocational students were majoring in TKR (Light Vehicle Technical) participated in this study. This research implemented Problem Based Learning as it was integrated into the learning and teaching process. Two meetings were carried out in this study. The teacher explained the subjects' material normally at the first meeting. At the second meeting, the teacher applied Oral Communication using the PBL as a means of learning model, and it was found that the strategy used had been able to help students in speaking English. Therefore, Oral Communication using Problem Based Learning can help the students become more active in speaking English. Keywords: Speaking skill, oral communication, PBL, Vocational School.

Abstract

Indonesia is the country where English is positioned as a foreign language. As a foreign language, English is familiar to Indonesian students. Although they have learnt it, they still get many difficulties in learning this language. They also have difficulties to pronounce English words. The correct pronunciation becomes one of the main that are important in communication using English. Thus, the researcher realized that was very useful to make and help the students practiced pronunciation through such interesting activity as often as possible by using some attractive strategy or interesting medias. The researchers chose song especially English songs as one of the media to teach and help the students to pronounce English words well. This present research investigated the effectiveness of English songs in teaching pronunciation especially the pronunciation of single vowels for secondary EFL students. It was a quantative research that used experimental design. This study was conducted on secondary EFL students in Senior High School in the tenth grade (X MIPA 1 as an experimental group and X MIPA 2 as a control group) at one of Public Senior High School in Sidoarjo. The researcher gave pre-test and post-test for those classes and the treatment would be given to the experimental group, while the control group would be taught with no treatment. First, the researcher gave pre-test to both of the group in order to make sure that both groups were equal.in the end of the research, the researcher conducted post test for those classes in order to know whether there would be any significant effect of students pronunciation in single vowels. The researcher analyzed the data by using Wilcoxon Test, using IBM SPSS for Windows release 24. The finding of this research revealed that English songs were effective in teaching English to improve students’ pronunciation of single vowels in English words for EFL students.Keywords: English song, pronunciation, single vowel.
