Abstract

In this research entitled “The Effect of Animation Video on Junior High School Student Reading Comprehension.” the goal of this research to investigate the effect of animation videos on junior high school students’ reading comprehension of narrative text. This research was quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test. The participants in this study were 63 students, 32 for the experimental group and 31 for the control group of 8th grade students in junior high school. This class chose based on the teachers who provide classes with the same competence as the daily values of their students. The result of this study showed that there were significant differences between students before and after treatment. In conclusion, video animation as a learning medium for learning reading comprehension and narrative text material has a positive impact.

Abstract

Nowadays, technology is already corporate with most peoples' activities. One example of the use of technology in education is a variety of learning tools that could help a learner achieve a better understanding during the teaching-learning process in the class more efficiently and effectively. One of the learning media tools used in the English learning process is Quizizz. The researcher wants to know students' ideas and experiences using Quizizz in reading comprehension. This study is qualitative research, with ten students from 10th grade at one vocational high school in Jombang as participants. In this study, the researcher used semi-structured interviews. This study's results reveal that most students are already familiar with Quizizz to implement in reading comprehension. They believe that Quizizz is a better learning media to use than traditional media and want to use it in every English lesson. Quizizz has many benefits, such as being easy to use, helping recall material for learning better, and making them feel motivated when they see the ranking leaderboard. Quizizz has drawbacks in the teaching and learning process as well.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills that students consider difficult when learning English. Writing becomes challenging due to psychological, linguistic, and cognitive problems. Narrative text was chosen as the type of text that was researched in this present study since it is familiar to students’ world. This research further aims to describe (1) the profile of the ninth graders’ narrative writing texts in the secondary EFL classroom and (2) the difficulties encountered by the ninth graders in writing narrative text in the secondary EFL classroom. In line with those research objectives, this present study was therefore descriptive qualitative. The data for the first research question were in the form of students’ written words, sentences, phrases, and paragraphs that were taken from their narrative writing text results. While for the second research question, the data were in the form of students’ responses regarding their difficulties in writing narrative text in the secondary EFL classroom that were obtained from interview. After all the data for the present study were collected, the researcher then analyzed those data. The results of the study revealed that students mostly could develop their ideas well by organizing and writing those ideas into a coherent content and text structure of narrative text and utilizing appropriate diction (vocabulary), language use, and writing mechanics. However, some difficulties were still found during the process of writing, for example, lack of motivation, lack of confidence in writing, and the influence of the first language on writing in English.

Abstract

Animation video is a type contemporary entertainment that blends speech, music, and visuals with moving pictures. The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not students’ listening comprehension significantly improves after receiving instruction via animated videos. This research employed a quantitative methodology. The Visual Communication Design Major (DKV) was chosen as the subject of this research at one state vocational highschool in Surabaya. Class 10 DKV 1 served as the experimental group, and class 10 DKV 2 as the control group in this research.The study’s findings indicate a substantial difference in post-test results between the experimental and control groups, indicating that the experimental group’s pupils had much higher listening comprehension than the control group’s. Thus, it can be said that using animated videos about describing person and describing things as an instructional tool at the treatment stage is very effective in improving the experimental group’s pupils’ listening comprehension in this present research.

Abstract

This research is aimed to develop an ideal EFL university students’ listening worksheet to support the enhancement of their listening comprehension using Podcast as the audio source. This was an educational design research study involving the iterative cycle of analysis and exploration; design and construction; and also, evaluation and reflection. To conduct the study, the researcher had to analyze and explore the real problem which was encountered by the educational practitioners or students. The researcher used open-ended questionnaire as the instrument to analyze the problem. The researcher found that the EFL university had faced the problem dealing with their listening comprehension skill. After that, the design and construction phase were done to construct an intervention as the solution to the real problem. The researcher designed a listening comprehension worksheet using podcast as the media or the audio source as the intervention which was designed based on the students’ needs encountered on analysis and exploration phase. Then, the designed worksheet was through some process of evaluation and revision processes in evaluation and reflection phase. After the evaluation of the processes, the product or intervention was through the empirical testing to test its practical value. The result reflects that the designed worksheet is ideal to support the enhancement of EFL university students’ listening comprehension skill.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the increase in learning outcomes of listening and perceptions or opinions of students in class VIII-K SMPN 35 Surabaya on the Dictogloss technique. The author uses data collection methods by testing and observation to get the results of increasing listening and perceptions or opinions of class VIII-K SMPN 35 Surabaya on the Dictogloss technique to improve listening skills. The research findings show that there is a significant increase in learning listening to material in class VIII-K SMPN 35 Surabaya when students get the dictogloss technique.

Abstract

Listening is the capacity to pay attention to and comprehend what other people are saying. One of the most exciting activities that improve listening skills is watching movies. One movie genre that is very safe for students to consume is the fairy tale. The fairy tale movie is currently being adopted through old cartoon movies and updated with human versions with more interesting storylines but still have moral values. The research design used for this study is Pre-experimental. The data collected was listening material. The listening material has been adapted from the children's story Alice in Wonderland. Moreover, I lead to the aims of this research are to find out the significant enhancement in terms of generic structure in narrative text and to find out the significant enhancement in terms of delivered message in narrative text. The researcher implemented a quantitative research design and this study involved ninth-grade students, 18 of whom were boys and 18 of whom were girls. There are changes in the pre-test and post-test scores regarding the generic structure of the narrative text. The score that changed from the first question reached 97% and in the second question 93.9%. The results showed a notable rise in the post-test score average from 72.79 to 88.82, signifying the effectiveness of incorporating videos as a learning tool. The study concluded that the use of video significantly enhanced students' listening comprehension skills and facilitated their understanding of narrative texts.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of utilizing multimedia content to improve English-speaking proficiency among twelfth-grade students. The research adopted a quasi-experimental design, involving a sample of 70 twelfth graders from one of the vocational high schools in Surabaya. The experimental group underwent English-speaking sessions utilizing multimedia materials, whereas the control group received conventional instruction. Pre-test and post-test assessments were conducted to gauge speaking proficiency. The analysis revealed a significant disparity between the pre-test mean (69.65) and post-test mean (80.13) scores in the experimental class. Conversely, the control class exhibited a pre-test mean of 65.29, with a slight increase to 70.94 post-test. The results unveiled a noteworthy enhancement in speaking performance among students in the experimental group compared to the control group. These findings suggest that integrating multimedia content into English-speaking instruction can effectively enhance students' speaking abilities in language acquisition. Hypothesis testing confirmed a substantial difference (T-test value > T-table value), underscoring the considerable impact of multimedia.

Abstract

The first language skill that must be mastered when learning English is vocabulary. Vocabulary mastery is still lacking because their curiosity is still low and they consider learning vocabulary uninteresting and not very important in learning. This research aims to find out whether the use of the learning media "Crossword Puzzle Game" is effective in increasing the vocabulary mastery of class X students at MAN 1 Gresik. This research applied a collaborative action research design in collaboration with one of the English teachers. For data collection, this research used pre-tests, post-tests, and interviews. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). The results of this research are that the mean student score in the pre-test is 41.90 and the mean student score in the post-test is 76.67. The students' mean post-test score was higher (34.77) than the pre-test. This shows that the use of crossword puzzles increases students' vocabulary significantly. The results of the normality test in this study show that the data is normal which is supported using a paired sample test to test the hypothesis. The results of the paired sample test are Asymp. sig. 2-tailed pre-test and post-test probability values of 0.000. This value is lower than alpha ? 0.05, This means that the research hypothesis is approved. In interviews with students to find out students' perspectives on their experiences in using crossword puzzle game media which can improve vocabulary mastery. They said that by getting used to seeing or recognizing the new vocabulary they encounter; it will be easier for them to remember the vocabulary and make learning English vocabulary effective and enjoyable. Based on the results above, it show that using "Crossword Puzzle Game" can help students improve vocabulary mastery.
