Abstract

The high prevalence of teenage depression in Indonesia warrants serious attention. Adolescents need assistance in effectively overcoming their depression to undergo a transformative process. This paper aims to elucidate a theological perspective on the body as a normative foundation for Christians to comprehend adolescents’ depression thoroughly and provide appropriate assistance. The research methodology employed in this study is the practical theology method advocated by Richard Osmer. The findings reveal that depression and its associated symptoms are not inherent designs of God for humans, who are "embodied beings." Adolescent depression disrupts the entirety of their selves, including their bodies. Furthermore, adolescents have the potential for transformation if depression is addressed holistically, considering both material and non-material aspects of an individual.

Abstract

The study aimed to criticize the weaknesses of the concept of tolerance education and analyze the components and concepts of John Calvin's cross-tolerance, which are used to strengthen and complement the perspective of teachers as informal leaders on tolerance education. The research method used is qualitative with a content analysis approach. The results of the current study found four main themes including the conceptual definition of tolerance, the dimensions of tolerance, the virtues of tolerance and the limits of tolerance. Cross tolerance teaches teachers as informal leaders that patience will not take root in humanity if there is no deep sorrow for evil and injustice to bear (a prerequisite for tolerance), doctrine and worship of God must be properly maintained to protect tolerance, and obedience to God is the mother and guardian of all virtues (including tolerance education). Thus, teachers as informal leaders in schools should not tolerate contamination of divine justice and true justice within the framework of a broader and fundamental virtue mindset.

Abstract

Translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew-Aramaic into other languages always raises textual issues. In the context of the Indonesian Bible, these textual issues have not received sufficient academic attention. With the release of the second edition of the New Translation Bible (TB2) in 2023, this paper will review the translation techniques of TB2 using textual criticism methods on a sample of Genesis 1-2. The first edition of the New Translation Bible (TB) will also be compared, along with the Masoretic Text (MT) and the Septuagint (LXX) where necessary. The findings are as follows: (1) TB2 shows consistency in word equivalence with MT, (2) TB2 includes a literal translation of MT, and (3) where verses are not problematic, TB2 appears to reflect MT more accurately as the Vorlage. It is hoped that this article will contribute insights into Bible translation techniques in Indonesian for the future.

Abstract

This article presents ideas on how to view the attributes of a holy church. The purpose is motivated by the misunderstanding of the church's holiness with the church's existence in the world. This existence gives rise to the notion that the church has sinfulness and weakness. This view can make the church's holiness attribute vague. To answer the background of the problem, this paper uses the content analysis method of literature review. The author finds that the attributes of a holy church cannot be clashed with the reality of the pilgrim's church in the world with the weaknesses and sins committed by its people. Ecclesiological dimensions can help reveal how to view the church's holiness. The attributes of a holy church remain holy because they are related to God's act of sanctifying His church.

Abstract

This article explores societal perspectives, particularly within Christian communities, on the concept of marriage, which has increasingly become marginalized due to societal priorities on education and career. This situation has led to more complex criteria and expectations for potential partners, where individuals are treated as consumable objects and are judged based on external standards, such as economic status and education. However, individuals can understand their personhood theologically and holistically through deep interactions, meaningful relationships, and mutual self-giving in interpersonal connections, as exemplified in marriage. The uniqueness of personhood is also realized through relating with another person. Through a theological reflection on the concepts of personhood and marriage, this article emphasizes the importance of marriage as a life calling that should not be a secondary option after career and educational achievements. This article concludes that the church should take an active role in addressing theological understandings of marriage and respond thoughtfully to the issue of singleness.

Abstract

The doctrine of baptism with the Holy Spirit remains a subject of theological debate, which has not yet reached a consensus among scholars within the Church traditions. These differences are not only found across church traditions but also within Reformed theology itself, as reflected in the views of Martyn Lloyd-Jones. This article examines and evaluates the main aspects of Lloyd-Jones' thought using the Reformed view as a primary framework. This analysis finds ambiguity in Lloyd-Jones' understanding of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. Although there are differences, Lloyd-Jones's views remain part of the broader Reformed view.

Abstract

Reformed theology rightly is drawn not just from Scriptural statements but also “what may be truly and certainly proved” from them. But what is the status of proofs (or logical consequences) from Scripture? And how many “consequences” can we take beyond Scripture before they become speculative and are no longer “good” or “necessary”? Reformed and Evangelical theology needs to explore a clearer understanding and formulation of what precisely constitute “good and necessary consequences” of Scripture.
