Abstract

The article's focus is the way a theological appreciation of Mary can enrich Reformed theology. I will argue that it can do so in the following three ways: (1) Mary is a prime example of faith, an ideal servant of the Lord, and in a sense the mother of all believers; (2) Mary reminds us of God’s faithfulness to the Jewish people, and wards off gnostic heresies; (3) Mary is a symbol of Christianity that has often been misused, but can be put to a good use, and reflection on Mary helps to steer clear of one-sided approaches of the position of women and furthers Reformed reflection on gender. The discussion of each of these aspects is based on exegesis of a passage of Scripture, and considers an aspect of the theological tradition.

Abstract

Historic continuity exists between the "Old Princeton" and Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. While this continuity could be considered from various vantage points, it is especially evident in how theologians from both institutions have engaged in the interrelationship between biblical and systematic theology. These theological traditions have had an abiding concern for interpreting the Scriptures correctly due to their deep commitment to the authority of the biblical canon.

Abstract

This article examines Martin Luther’s political theology via his theological contributions to political discourses, reviewing select biblical commentaries, sermons, and catechism to identify important themes. In light of negative assessments of Luther’s political views, it is important to consult his theological and biblical texts when analyzing his ideas. To understand his presentation of a biblical political theology, it is important to comprehend how his biblical exegeses informed his political views. Luther differed from others in that his political ideas were principally theological; similar to Augustine, his political views were closely tied to aspects of theological anthropology and stressed the role of government as serving the common good and the welfare of the people. His understanding of political theology emphasized the gospel and freedom.

Abstract

A Christian's acknowledgment that God's image is also found in others is a Christian political hospitality. Because it is political, Christian hospitality does not promote the mentality of us and those where we are identified as victims and those who are labeled oppressors. Many scholars have identified this mentality as the root cause of various social pathologies such as colonialism, war, to identity politics which political demagogues and buzzers have amplified. Our problem may not lie in our ability to differentiate between us and them because this mentality is inherent. However, we—as the image of God—may have failed, first and foremost, to love.

Abstract

This research aims to show that the Bible is a canonical memory with the object of covenant memory so that the people of God in all times and places can communicate covenant memory within their community. By conducting a literature study to explore the connection between theology and cultural memory, this paper discusses the thoughts of Michael Welker and Jan Assmann. The research finds that the Bible is a cultural memory that acquires additional faith value, thus becoming canonical. Besides the Bible, canonic memory is also found in the belief systems of traditional societies. The difference between the Bible and traditional belief systems does not lie in canonic memory but is found in the objects of the covenant within the Bible. This writing finds that the Church, as a covenant-receiving community, has covenant memory as a special memory only communicated and possessed by the people of God.

Abstract

The text of Deuteronomy 24: 1-4 is not as simple as it seems at first glance. It is often read as one, if not the only, divorce law in the Old Testament. Other interpreters read it as a law that protects wives from arbitrary divorce. This article and several other interpreters disagree with these two interpretations. What makes this article different is the use of modern legal discourse. Based on the legal subject and legal relationship, this text prohibits a husband from reuniting with his ex-wife whom he has divorced and who has also remarried to another man and then became a widow again. To interpret the original intent of this law, it would parallelise contemporaneous or more ancient extrabiblical sources, but none are found. Its postbiblical parallels are found in a Jewish legal text and a Quranic text, which confirms the text of Deuteronomy as a prohibition of marriage reunion. It helps us read Deuteronomy's text as a prohibition of (marriage) reunion. This law is for husbands with a strong position in a patriarchal culture so they do not arbitrarily divorce their wives because their regret would be useless.

Abstract

While Wisdom’s speech in Proverbs 1: 20-33 may or may not have been composed as an independent poem, its function within the structure of the prologue complements the initial discourse (Proverbs 1: 8-19). Wisdom picks up and furthers three main themes of the father’s instructions, specifically the notion of the divine authority of wisdom, the nature and urgency of character development, and the reality of the deed-consequence nexus. Taken together, both discourses share the same rhetorical purpose: they are designed to persuade the listening youth of the need to establish character at an early age by heeding the wisdom and instruction of his parents.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the concept of covenant according to the thoughts of Johan Herman Bavinck in responding to the situation of religious diversity in Indonesia. In the author's observation, the religious diversity situation in Indonesia continues to be a subject of controversy. The presence of followers of a particular religion is perceived as a threat to followers of other faiths. Relations among religious followers tend to breed suspicion. Moreover, in the context of religion, individuals also tend to struggle to think clearly when addressing such situations. The author argues that issues of human identity and rationality amid the religious diversity situation in Indonesia can be mediated and understood through the concept of covenant. Thus, through this writing, the author aims to demonstrate that the covenant concept can be used as a framework for understanding life as a Christian amidst religious diversity in Indonesia and addressing intolerant conditions where injustice may arise in society.
