Abstract

At the end of the 20th century discussions about human freedom has become discussions about free will. Discussions about this topic end up with the polemic between autonomy and heteronomy. The idea of autonomy tries to eliminate all limitations that obstruct human freedom. But after all the limitations have been eliminated, there are some raise questions about internal authority in a person’s self that limits him or her. In the opinion of the writer, theologians who approaches the problem of human freedom as a ‘freedom from’ would never touch the essence of human freedom. Gerrit Cornelis Berkouwer discusses human freedom not with the ‘free from’ approaches that will lead to a secularistic humanism but tries to look at the meaning of freedom biblically, that is “true freedom.” This kind of freedom does not depend on both external nor internal authorities, but rather depend on the hope of eschatological liberation where the believers will be in full obedience to Christ. Abstract

The continuity in the Orthodox understanding of the two wills of Christ, which is based on His two natures (Dyothelitism) is very important in order to understand about the Person of Christ, and how the work of redemption was perfectly performed by Him during His incarnation as the Logos that assumed a human nature. Dyothelitism which was represented by the thought of Maximus the Confessor is a reference in order to understand the Christology of two natures – one Person of Chalcedon, which has been accepted by the Church as an orthodoxy in the fight against Monothelitism and Monoenergism. The continuance between Maximus the Confessor’s Dyothelite thoughts and the thoughts and works of John Calvin in his Christology, is very important for the understanding of the implementation and perfect fulfillment of Christ's atoning work in the view of Reformed theology as represented by Calvin. Abstract

This article seeks to promote an interest of the audience to read the Imitation of Christ, the second most read book by both Protestants and Roman Catholics after the Bible. The book is dated to pre-Reformation time and provides fruitful soil for the Reformation by keeping close to the Scripture and the primacy of Christ. The book’s three main motives sound strangely familiar to modern ears: the basic pairs of opposition coloring the current fabric of reality, the sovereignty of God, and the obedience of God’s people. Even today the book remains fresh with its honesty and practical value, despite its being firmly grounded in doctrinal rocks. KEYWORDS: Imitation of Christ; Thomas a Kempis; practical theology

Abstract

Discipline for children in the family has presented a dilemma between two extremes which keep repeating ranging from violence to neglect. Similar dilemma is also faced by Christian families in Indonesia. Therefore, this essay seeks to describe and re-analyze the relevance of William Gouge’s view on the concept of discipline for children, one of the Puritans who faced similar dilemma in his era. It is to be considered as an alternative concept of discipline for children in Christian families today in Indonesia. Gouge seeks to bring back the biblical concept of order and definition of discipline, as well as all the elements that should exist in the discipline of children in the family. This study concludes that Gouge’s view is relevant and can be one alternative to face the dilemma in Indonesia. Abstract

Protestantism in France has an ambiguous attitude to the surrounding culture, because of its position as a small minority. The other forces present are Roman Catholic authoritarianism and the liberal free-thinking of Enlightenment humanism, represented by the likes of Voltaire and Rousseau. The paradox is that since the Revolution in 1789, which was anti-royal and anti-religious, when Protestantism has sided with the majority Roman Church it has undermined its Reformed identity, and when it has sided with libertarian free-thinking it has undermined its Christian identity. This remains a feature of French Protestantism until the present day. As a result of this tension, the thought of one of France’s greatest thinkers, John Calvin, became virtually unknown, not only in French culture and society as a whole, but also within French Protestantism itself. Abstract

This article revisits how Christians since almost two millenniums have made use of creeds and confessions. Especially confessional vows used at Westminster Theological Seminary, also refer to the vows of the churches who are members of NAPARC (The North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council). First, it examines the historical overview of various Reformed confessions, and historical survey of Reformed confessions from the Reformation to the present. Then, Westminster seminary's Presbyterian and Reformed heritage, and finally, authority of and subscription to the confessions. To define Reformed confessional theology which arose in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, this article include the table of the confessions of Westminster seminary or the NAPARC churches. KEYWORDS: creeds, confessions, Westminster, Reformed.

Abstract

In this article, the author gives an account of the life and theology of C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), the famous Reformed Baptist Minister, who preached in London in the second half of the nineteenth century. The account demonstrates that Spurgeon was not only the most renowned preacher of his day, most of whose sermons were published and are still read widely today but also an author who published many volumes. In addition to his work as preacher and writer, Spurgeon built children’s orphanages, started a theological college and assisted in many noble causes. As part of this benevolent work, his church contributed large sums to support poor relief. Having told Spurgeon’s story, the article then indicates six areas of Spurgeon’s life and ministry which are helpful for us today: his Passion for Souls; his Devotion to Prayer and Study; His attitude to the Bible & Expository Ministry; his Pastoral Ministry; His Practical Christianity; and His refusal to compromise on the truth of the gospel. Abstract

This article shows that there are at least two key hermeneutical tensions in evangelical feminist interpretation of the Bible. The first hermeneutical tension concern the issue of readers' prejudices. Feminists remind us that readers are always disposed to read texts against the background of their own expectations, customs, and world views. And the second hermeneutical tension, namely the tension over the nature of the actual practices of the first century church. Evangelical feminists have tended to give different answers depending on the passage that they are interpreting. In sum, feminism in its hermeneutical principles alerts us to the role of reader prejudice and social background in understanding texts. KEYWORDS: Hermeneutic, feminist, prejudice, Christian
