Abstract

Thinking in terms of ecclesiastical power as a negative force has often found a breeding ground in the Pastoral Epistles. To what extent is that justified? This article examines a passage that always comes up when the position of women in the church is discussed: 1 Timothy 2:8−15. Three aspects will be considered consecutively: power, powerlessness, and authorised power. Power says something about the underlying problem that Timothy faced: the male/female relationship in the Ephesian congregation threatened to degenerate into a power struggle. Powerlessness refers to the story of Adam and Eve mentioned in verses 13−15. The Genesis narrative recounts human weakness, which in 1 Timothy becomes a sort of triptych about Eve and creation, Eve and the fall, and Eve and redemption. Authorised power is the way in which the problematic situation in Ephesus was regulated with apostolic authority, to create space for the trustworthy Word. Paul’s instructions about the behaviour of women could nowadays easily be considered a kind of misogynistic power play. However, the apostle should be interpreted on his own terms. This is true both for his social context and for his missionary drive. KEYWORDS: power, man, woman, congregation, Paul

Then, finally making proposals on how Paul's approach to be used in the practice of today's Christian apologetics based on the challenges given above. Abstract

This article revisits the position of the institutional church in the ecclesiology of Abraham Kuyper (1837—1920). Following the growing interest in the life and work of Kuyper in North America, some scholars pay attention to the importance of his ecclesiology. However, it is common to consider that Kuyper in his later life preferred the aspect of the church as organism and thus marginalizing the church as institution. After exploring his ecclesiological concept on the distinction of the church as organism and institution, this paper examines several major works of Kuyper on the institutional church written in his later life. Finding that Kuyper consistently viewed the institutional church highly, I argue that his restriction toward the church as insitution is to strengthen and provide a stable position of the institutional church in modern society. Abstract

Prayer is a central theme in both Calvin's Institutes and the Heidelberg Catechism, although it is a neglected theme in present-day dogmatics. The present article compares Calvin's and the Heidelberg Catechism's stance on prayer in the context of the renewal of prayer as an effect of the Reformation of the 16th century. Both emphasise the experiential character of prayer and the importance of God's promise. The discussion of 'Amen' serves as a grand finale to the Heidelberg Catechism. KEYWORDS: Calvin, Heidelberg Catechism, prayer, promise, Reformation, experience.

Discipline for children in the family has presented a dilemma between two extremes which keep repeating ranging from violence to neglect. Similar dilemma is also faced by Christian families in Indonesia. Therefore, this essay seeks to describe and re-analyze the relevance of William Gouge’s view on the concept of discipline for children, one of the Puritans, to be considered as an alternative concept of discipline for children in Christian families today in Indonesia. Abstract

This article is an overview of the ideas of Lesslie Newbigin and Johan Herman Bavinck in thinking about the basis of the Trinity on a theology of mission. These two missionaries agreed to base their mission on the doctrine of the Trinity. The mission-based on the doctrine of Trinity is the mission that does not distinguish between the gospel and social justice or "Word" and "deed". There are various reasons and aspects put forward by Newbigin and Bavinck for the importance of the doctrine of the Trinity for the mission. These two figures have something in common. They believe that missions based on the Trinity framework can answer challenges and obstacles in the mission field. When reviewing the differences between these two figures, Newbigin concluded that a proper theological foundation of the mission is based on the Triune God build upon one's struggles in mission service and participation in the IMC-WCC organization. As for Bavinck, it is essential to investigate the Bible first to conclude that mission is based on the Triune God.

Abstract

This article is a comparative overview of the theology of religions according to the views of Lesslie Newbigin and Johan Herman Bavinck. Although these two missionaries are rooted in the tradition of Reformed theology, they both have different views in examining the theology of religions. Newbigin in analyzing religions tends to be negative so that Newbigin expresses an urgent urge to proclaim the gospel. Meanwhile, Bavinck tends to be positive in examining religions and does not provide an urgent encouragement in proclaiming the Gospel. At the end of this article, the author concludes that the views of each missionary figure should be embraced to obtain a more comprehensive and whole understanding in analyzing the theology of religions.

Abstract

In this article, the author provides an introduction to the importance of great musical works for the Christian faith—in which music and theology can be integrated; and through music, theology can be articulated. However, the author points out the gap between the writings of musicologists and theologians with the Christians’ life today. In this research, the author focused on St. John Passion by Bach—in which many Christians can actually enjoy his music, but their understanding of this work is very limited. In the discussion, the author describes the work of St. John Passion—based on Johannine’s view and the theology of the cross which it contains; and answers the questions: (1) How can through a great musical work, the theology of the cross—Christ glorified through His suffering—can be articulated? (2) How can Christians put their faith in the Savior who was humiliated, suffered, and humbled to the deepest lowliness?
