Abstract

India's Himachal Pradesh region is a home for several villages in which its rural political system named Panchayati Raj (PR) is increasingly influential in the state. Recently, the state holds the elections for the Panchyati Raj. The local people are enthusiastically engaged in the election and exhibited interest in voting in general and youth voting in particular. The results of the Panchyati Raj election portray the picture of all the political parties and their influence in the state. All parties emphasize the need of connecting with people through communication. The state's literacy rate is another intriguing feature in which, the state, despite living in countryside, has the second-highest percentage of literacy after Kerala. As a result, the populace as a whole are more informed and responsive to communication. It was noted that both traditional and contemporary media have been used throughout the election to communicate with the public. The current study examines the communication tactics used by all political parties in the Panchyati Raj election in the Himachal Pradesh’s district of Kangra. It is only 5.71% of the people of Kangra district residing in urban areas; while the remainder reside in rural ones. The culturally appropriate communication methods among villagers become more significant in this election. This study then aims to observe the communication tools, language (mother tongue), development issues and key factors of participants such as resident, life style, or education (villagers and candidates). The researchers used an observation study as a non-participatory means through interview tool and used content analysis method for data analysis. The results of this study showed that Pahari (people living in high terrains) were more connected with their traditional culture including communication pattern, lifestyle along with concerned with roots development.

Abstract

Repressive approach is one of the state's responses to social movements taken to restrain or limit the action of a movement that always strives for a social change process in society. In this context, Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam – FPI) are two Islamic groups that recently after 2016 have been active in pressuring the government on various political issues. The government responded to these two groups with repressive measures such as stigmatization, criminalization, and dissolving or banning the organization. This study aims to discuss the details of government policies in responding to both HTI and FPI in Indonesia using comparative analysis by collecting secondary data from the media, books, and journals relevant with this study. This study found that the Indonesian government has used various means to repress HTI and FPI, such as intimidation, stigmatization, and disbandment to the organizations.

Abstract

Parental phubbing is the latest phenomenon that raises concerns because of the changes in habits due to technological developments. It is a form of parental behavior that ignores children as they tend to focus more on activities on gadgets or smartphones. Current parental phubbing studies are limited; however, previous studies have showed the negative impact of parental phubbing on children in late childhood, adolescent, and emerging adulthood, especially on their mental well-being. Therefore, our study aims to determine the impact of parental phubbing on participants’ well-being using a quantitative approach of a comparative independent sample between participants experiencing high and low parental phubbing. The results showed that there were some differences in the effects of parental phubbing on mental well-being, especially mother's parental phubbing (PP-M), for both male and female. In general, parental phubbing affects 3 aspects of mental well-being: a sense of confidence, hope for the future, problem solving and decision-making abilities with a medium effect size. The results indicated that increasingly sophisticated technological developments have affected some changes in behavior and habits through parenting practices, which are not so realized to have negative consequences on the participants’ mental well-being. Our study can also be a reference for new knowledge for practitioners and parents to build an awareness to minimize the further negative impact of parental phubbing behavior on children's development and well-being (in the wide range of developmental stages).

Abstract

This survey study aims to describe the students’ perception of teachers’ written feedback in an academic writing class in a private university in Indonesia. 119 students filled in the questionnaire on students’ perceptions of teachers’ written feedback adapted from Ouahidi and Lamkhanter (2020). A descriptive statistic measuring mean, frequency, and standard deviation were used to analyze the data from the questionnaire. The results showed that the teacher’s written feedback to the writing results in the academic writing class was useful and students did not find it difficult to understand any feedback given by the teacher. Most of the students answered often when being asked about their understanding to the feedback. Students were also able to use teacher comments to revise their writing. Revision and rewriting were also found as the follow-up activities that are most often done by students after receiving feedback. Then, it was also revealed that students preferred their teacher to give them correction with comments to all the major errors in their writing. In addition to the feedback, students also preferred their teachers to give praise and criticism. Regarding the correction of students' writing work, students preferred the teacher to correct the errors in content or ideas. Further implications and suggestions are also discussed in this article.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the local government's implementation of volcanic crisis communication during the emergency response to the eruption of Mount Merapi in Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This research used a case study method with a qualitative-descriptive approach and data were collected through interviews, field observations, and documentation. The results of study showed that the implementation of volcanic crisis communication can be explained in terms of information sources, message production and distribution, communication channels, and the affordability and speed of information. During the emergency response period, the Regional Disaster Management Agency has implemented a volcano crisis communication model based on the established standard operating procedures; however, several field findings showed a number of weaknesses in its implementation, such as in the flow of information and communication, which was still very bureaucratic and inflexible, and the lack of complete and fast information. On the other hand, the community has a more straightforward and flexible communication and information system to meet their own information needs regarding the Mount Merapi Eruption disaster. The communication pattern is supported by local wisdom and the role of religious and community leaders who are still believed to be credible sources of information. Communities have also succeeded in establishing independent communication channels to share disaster information by leveraging social networks and traditional media. This research provides an academic and practical contribution to develop the volcanic crisis communication studies in Indonesia.
