Abstract

Discourse on elderly people has not received sufficient attention from African academics and the government. Gerontology is one of the less popular areas of specialisation within Sociology, the social sciences, and the humanities in Africa. The lack of medical and social services specifically for elderly persons in African countries highlights the institutional neglect of the elderly across most parts of the continent. An increasing ageing population is a new phenomenon in Africa, but the turn of the 21st century has added a new dimension to the continent. Africa’s population is mainly youthful due to its relatively low life expectancy compared to developed countries. However, the number of elderly persons on the continent has continued to rise. This paper analysed data sets from various organisations to explain why Africa’s population is ageing both at the base and the peak. The Theory of Risk Society by Ulrich Beck (1992) is adopted to explain the challenges resulting from globalisation and the subsequent increase in longevity as living conditions or standards improve in Africa. The study found that longevity in African countries is driven by globalisation, which spreads a modern lifestyle and improved healthcare services for those who can afford them, even abroad. Additionally, the paper suggests that ageing at the lower level occurs in Africa because of the cultural belief that encourages Africans to have many children, and men to marry even in their 60s and 70s. As people live longer, both the young and elderly populations continue to contribute to high birth rates. This has resulted in Africa having a high fertility rate, alongside a rising elderly population. Longevity in Africa has significant implications, such as the lack of geriatric services in most African countries, which means that as Africans live longer, the consequences will be serious, especially given the absence of social protection policies to support the ageing population.

Abstract

This research discusses the transformation of Taman Mini LRT Station from a transit point to a center of social and economic interaction based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD). Through a descriptive qualitative approach, this research explains how the integration of public space and accessibility of transportation modes can shape new meanings. This explanatory research uses a case study approach to space and seeks to explain the cause-and-effect relationship of the phenomena that occur. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation. The results show that transit space can act as a catalyst for social change in the dynamics of urban mobility. This study confirms that modern transit spaces in urban areas are not only places of transit, but also social and economic arenas that reflect the complexity of contemporary urban life.

SMA Katolik St. Albertus Malang continuously develops an adaptive learning system that accommodates generational differences among students, particularly through the application of diverse teaching styles. This study aims to determine the influence of teachers’ teaching styles on the learning outcomes of Grade XI Social Science students in Sociology during the 2024/2025 academic year. A quantitative approach was employed, using questionnaires, observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The analysis was based on six teaching style indicators: voice variation, focusing, eye contact, pausing, body movement and facial expression, and teacher mobility. The results show that the teachers’ teaching styles were generally in the “fairly good” category, with dominant aspects including voice variation, eye contact, and pausing, which effectively enhanced students’ motivation and understanding. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant positive relationship between teachers’ teaching styles and students’ learning outcomes, highlighting the importance of adaptive and continuously developed teaching approaches in effective learning outcomes.

Abstract

Technological development has brought significant changes to the socio-economic life of communities, particularly in the area of Lebakmuncang Village, Bandung. One sector that has driven the transformation of employment in Lebakmuncang Village is home convection, which has become increasingly popular alongside traditional occupations such as farming. The purpose of this study is to examine how home convection in Lebakmuncang Village has been adopted and how it has become a form of livelihood transformation for the local community. This research employs a qualitative approach with purposive sampling as the data collection method. The study was conducted from November 28 to 30, 2025, and involved six informants: two home convection owners from ATO Official and APIH Collection, three workers' home convection, and one village figure. The results show that the transformation process did not immediately change the socio-economic conditions of the people of Lebakmuncang Village but occurred gradually. Home convection has become one of the preferred occupations among villagers because the workplaces are generally located close to their homes and operate continuously.
