Abstract

This study aimed at describing mental disorders (psychic) experienced by two characters, Mak Ipah and Pemuda in “Mak Ipah dan Bunga-bunga” written by Intan Paramadhita. The two characters (protagonist and antagonist) of the short story were analyzed using psychoanalysis theory. The theory believes that human being is more influenced by the subconscious than the conscious. Like a psychotic patient with schizophrenia; the patient is unaware of his deviant behavior or pedophilia and only cares about his desire (affecting his sexual behavior) for children, which he considers as something natural. This study used qualitative-descriptive method. The research data were in the form of literary text (short story) that represents a person's mental disorder (the characters). The sources of resesarch data were from the narrative text of the short story "Mak Ipah dan Bunga-bunga" by Intan Paramadhita. The results showed that after the death of his only child, Mak Ipah was considered an insane individual and was then singled out by all the villagers. She became apathetic and chose to interact with the plants in her yard because she forgot the people around her. From this, the hypothesis drawn was that Mak Ipah has a psychological disorder, namely a psychotic type of schizophrenia due to a past trauma. Meanwhile, the other character named Pemuda suffered from a psychological disorder, namely pedophilia. It can be concluded that this short story tells two abnormal characters, and proves that "Mak Ipah and Bunga-bunga" is a short story with psychological disorders in its narration.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing a short story by Djenar Maesa Ayu in her book entitled Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet. The short story discussed in this research was called Durian. The objective of this study was to reveal the triggers of mental disorders experienced by the main character in the short story Durian. The object of this research was Durian, with the psychology of Hyza as the formal object of this research. The short story Durian became a primary data source, and all articles related to Durian acted as secondary data sources. The data collection technique utilized in the recent study was analytical, including reading, listening, and taking notes. The research results revealed that the mental disorders experienced by Hyza's character came from past experiences that could not be resolved, so it accompanied the character's abnormal mental development. Those experiences triggered the character's subconscious desires that affect the character's conscious mind. Hallucinations and fears are a form of mental disorder as a result of the perception from the past experiences.

Abstract

Policies issued by the government and medical units to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic have somewhat affected people’s lives. One thing that is quite noticeable is the construction of communication on social media, which is increasingly being carried out by people globally. To build a ‘healthy climate’ on social media, the role of non-personal accounts in maintaining the integrity of religious tolerance is crucial. This article aimed to analyze the narrative of religious tolerance from the Twitter account of Komunitas Katolik Garis Lucu (@katolikG). Its existence as one of the accounts under the name of Garis Lucu (GL) indicates that they bring a spirit of peace in using social media. The current research described the existence of @katolikG’s account on social media and interpreted the messages concerning religious tolerance. The research used a qualitative approach with data collection based on a literature study. In presenting the data, the researcher utilized the descriptive-analytical method and employed the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes to analyze the data. The results revealed that the Twitter account of @katolikG seeks to build religious tolerance on social media by creating messages within the scope of global multiculturalism. As its messages are wrapped in the form of jokes, memes, and satire, @katolikG builds religious discourse full of adaptability, flexibility, and tolerance in accepting differences.

Abstract

The practice of cults has been proven to be dangerous to the mental health of the victims. This study analyzed and demonstrated some samples of persuasive communication techniques used by cults in recruiting and brainwashing their members in a cult-themed movie and a cult documentary, as well as their effects on the victims and how the victims respond to them. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach, and the data were taken from Midsommar and The Sacrament. The 70 data in words and non-verbal gestures were analyzed with a sociopragmatic approach, particularly Perloff's persuasive communication techniques, Miller's persuasive communication effects, and Cialdini's six basic human tendencies in responding to persuasive communication. This study found that 1) persuasive communication in Midsommar was dominated by using the interpersonal persuasion technique, whereas in The Sacrament was dominated by using the exact message, 2) the shaping effect dominated both movies and 3) the liking tendency dominated both. This study hopes to give an understanding among the readers and society about how persuasive the cults use communication to recruit and brainwash their targets so that they would not fall into the danger of cults in real life Keywords: brainwashing; cult; movie; persuasive communication; socio-pragmatics

Abstract

Generally, a romantic love story with psychological nuances becomes the marking theme in Korean drama. Using the themes is a strategy so Korean dramas stay in the market and keep providing viewers with fresh images. DramaHometown Cha-Cha-Cha(2021) is interesting because the main character experiences severe trauma yet still stands back for his life. This article discussed the phenomenon using Sigmund Freud. The approach used was a Freudian analysis model with a qualitative descriptive method. The aim of the study was to explain (a) the trauma that affects the main character’s personality and (b) the roles of the id, ego, and superego in the character’s behavior. The results showed that the personality of the main character, Du-Shik, was described as kind, helpful, friendly, romantic, and warm, but he has a very heavy trauma. Since he was young, Du-Shik was abandoned by the people he loved, and he felt that he had failed to help a security guard and caused a friend’s death. The trauma he experienced affects his personality and life, such as frequent nightmares because of excessive guilt, fear, and anxiety. The research finding also revealed that the main character’s id was presented through the emergence of pity, comfort, love, fear, and nightmares. The ego was presented through the use of common sense, contemplation, and speechlessness in making decisions, while the superego was represented with a willingness to tell stories and dare to love the leading female character, Hyejin, back. Abstract

Omicron variant has been massively reported on Indonesian mass media following the spread of other previous variants during Covid-19 pandemic. This research combines computer science and linguistics to analyze the news on the variant. It implemented quantitative research using computational algorithm by collecting the titles of the news from Indonesian mainstream online mass media. Sentiment Analysis (SA) was applied to obtain the sentiments, opinion, and subjectivities of the texts along with topic modeling in classifying the topics. The words in the headline news titles were used as the data and grabbed by Python programming language. A criterion-based sampling was employed in to select the relevant data and to formulate the criteria in the research methodology. The results were filtered to ‘Omicron’ keyword for SA processing by the Azure Text Sentiment Analysis tool. The results of SA, as computational research, was then confirmed with Attitude Analysis (AA) from the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics. AA classified the words into affect, judgment, and appreciation as the attitude construed in English text. This research provides SA as the insights of Omicron issue. The presence of AA extracts the words into bipolar senses of human’s meaning interpretation. AA is important to straighten SA findings. SA has contextual meaning problem and requires study on its words classified in ‘neutral’ which are then confidently directed into positive or negative meanings by AA. It is found that there are different dynamics by SA and AA findings as they reflect particular meanings. Besides their difference, SA is useful for managing overload data into fast policy making whereas AA makes sure the acceptable meanings to people. In this case AA corrects the bias occurring from SA.
