Abstract

This research aims to analyze the realization of derivational affixes in eleventh-grade students’ writing assignments in the specialization class, which is literature class at State Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Karanganyar. Plag, Carstairs and McCarthy, and Haspelmath and Sims were the theories used in this research. These theories are related to the characteristics of derivational affixes, the kinds of word class changes in derivational affixes, and the categories of derivational affixes. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with the document analysis technique to gather data from eleventh-grade students’ writings.  The researcher found 285 words formed through the derivational affixes process. While derivational infixes were not found in the study, the findings show that derivational suffixes are more widely used than derivational prefixes. In short, students applied derivational affixes grammatically correctly in their writings.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate the impact of popular English songs on students' motivation to learn English at School X in Jombang using a quasi-experimental design. This study focuses on implementing English popular songs (EPS) popular in the last 15 years and remain popular today. A sample of 42 students from two different classes participated in the study. Data were gathered using a questionnaire and analyzed statistically with SPSS version 20. The findings indicate that students' motivation to learn English was moderate, based on their responses to the Likert scale questionnaire. Furthermore, Spearman's rank correlation test found a moderate correlation between students' motivation and the use of EPS. In light of these findings, using EPS does not significantly affect students' motivation. However, it was noted that students' learning experiences, a component of the L2 Motivational Self System, improved. Additionally, a Chi-square test of independence examined the relationship between the frequency of students listening to EPS and their motivation. The results suggest that students who frequently listen to English songs tend to have higher motivation. This study provides insights into the potential benefits of incorporating popular music into English language learning to enhance student engagement and motivation.

Abstract

This study examines the social ideas embedded in Denny Caknan's hit songs—Kartonyono Medot Janji, Sugeng Dalu, and Los Dol—using Janet Wolff's social production theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research integrates intrinsic elements, such as lyrics and music videos, with extrinsic elements, including cultural, social, and personal contexts. The findings reveal that Denny Caknan's works resonate deeply with audiences due to their relatable narratives of heartbreak and resilience, rooted in the Javanese cultural preference for emotionally evocative songs. The "agent" in these works is represented by sobat ambyar (the broken-hearted community), who amplifies the cultural and emotional significance of his music. Additionally, the incorporation of visual elements inspired by modern trends, like Korean dramas, enhances the universal appeal of these songs. This analysis highlights the dynamic interplay between individual creativity and collective cultural production, emphasizing the role of societal influences in shaping artistic expression. Ultimately, Denny Caknan's music exemplifies how popular art can serve as both a reflection of cultural identity and a medium for shared emotional experiences

Abstract

As a land of immigrants, America is expected to provide an environment free of discrimination. However, many literary works highlight the struggles faced by Mexican immigrants, including The Circuit by Francisco Jiménez, which depicts the challenges experienced by Mexican-American families. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research design to examine the Mexican-American identity after crossing the border through Gloria Anzaldúa's (1987) Borderlands theory. The data in this study are in the form of sentences. The data was taken from The Circuit as the primary data source. The findings reveal Panchito's hybrid identity, negotiated between his Mexican heritage and the realities of life in America. Despite facing language barriers and discrimination challenges, Panchito maintains a connection to his cultural roots. This study offers a new perspective on identity negotiations in the borderlands by using The Circuit as a primary data source, which contributes to a deeper understanding of the Mexican-American immigrant experience

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between cultural values and student performance in the school setting. It addresses how cultural values shape students’ academic achievements and overall educational success. While previous research has explored the role of cultural values in education, there has been limited analysis of their direct effect on student performance in specific contexts, such as Njombe. This research implemented behaviourism theory and adopted a mixed- method case study approach. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews with 42 individuals, including students, teachers, and educational administrators from public or governmental schools in the Njombe region, southern Tanzania. The findings indicate that cultural values substantially impact student's academic success, with most participants acknowledging this influence. However, perceptions vary, revealing challenges and opportunities in integrating cultural factors into education. The insights provided by this study underscore the importance of incorporating cultural considerations into educational practices and interventions to enhance student achievement.

Abstract

The depiction of graphic violence in movies is still quite debatable, whether it was necessary enough to be shown as they were believed to affect others to commit real-life violence. Quentin Tarantino, a movie director who grew up enjoying western, exploitation, and action movie genres, did not find any problem applying such elements as he believed it was nothing but one of the entertainment elements in movies. Being famous for his action-revenge movies, Tarantino once again proved to the audience how graphic violence can be one of the necessary aspects to be infused as a catharsis element through an alternative history narrative within his non-action-crime nor action-revenge genre movie under the title of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019). To justify the graphic violence as catharsis through the audience's perspective, the writer applied the alternative history narrative theory and collected the data in the form of movie reviews on the Letterboxd website and comments on the YouTube website through qualitative content analysis. The results show how audiences justify the application of graphic violence through an alternative history narrative as a catharsis element that Tarantino adjusted.

Abstract

This study explores how cultural narratives in poetry reveal and critique societal beauty standards and fixated gender roles. This poem is analyzed using qualitative content analysis, through the lens of myth and symbol theory, psychoanalytic feminism, and gender role theory to uncover deeper meanings behind symbolic representations and internalized expectations in the poem. The figure of the Barbie doll serves as a cultural myth, promoting an idealized femininity that reinforces traditional norms. These ideals, internalized through early socialization and unconscious pressure, shape women’s identities, leading to emotional conflict and self-alienation. Gender roles theory further explains how behaviors, responsibilities, and values are assigned based on socially constructed expectations, often limiting individual potential. The poem demonstrates how these societal forces prioritize appearance over ability, suppressing authenticity and self-worth. Through its critique, the poem remains a powerful commentary on how enduring myths and roles continue to influence women’s lives in contemporary society. Keywords: appearance, Barbie Doll, beauty standard, gender roles, stereotype

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the pragmatic strategies of male and female customers while giving a nebulizer product review sold by Omron Healthcare in Tokopedia's online customer review and rating. The theories used in this research are gender and politeness strategies. This research is qualitative descriptive because the reality of the data depends on the context and is then described based on the context as well. The data source is in Tokopedia's online customer review, whereas the data are transcripts of male and female customers' comments on Omron Healthcare's nebulizer product. This research finds 50 data: 25 are male, and 25 are female customers. The findings show that male and female customers mostly use positive politeness while giving product reviews. However, females only use two sub-strategies of positive politeness, whereas males use four. Furthermore, the research finds that male customers use negative politeness strategies more often. Additionally, males use more off-record than females. Lastly, only males use the off-record strategy. In short, male and female customers give positive comments, but female customers use more hyperbolic expressions, while male customers use reciprocity and approval.
