Abstract

Waste management has become a significant challenge in Tana Duen Village, Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, due to the absence of a structured system. The Sapa Tana program was designed using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach by optimizing community-owned human, social, environmental, physical, and financial assets. This article aims to formulate a waste management strategy that not only focuses on environmental aspects but also generates social and economic value. The analysis shows that the stages of discovery, dream, design, define, and destiny can strengthen community participation, enhance the productivity of targeted groups, and promote the creation of a sustainable waste management system. The program also opens opportunities for income generation through the exchange of plastic waste and the utilization of compost. Furthermore, Sapa Tana fosters collective awareness to protect the environment and strengthen social solidarity. Through cross-sector collaboration involving village government, local agencies, and community groups, Sapa Tana has the potential to become a community empowerment model that is responsive to local contexts, nurtures a sense of ownership, and can be replicated in other regions facing similar challenges.

Abstract

The fishing community in Pegantungan Village faces significant challenges, including income instability due to seasonal dependency and severe environmental pollution from unprocessed crab shell waste. This situation is compounded by the limited economic roles available to women. This article discusses a community empowerment initiative, the Pegantungan Sejahtera program, which was designed to address these interconnected issues through an integrated approach. The program's objective is to build economic resilience and environmental sustainability. The method utilizes circular economy principles and an Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) framework, empowering the community through training and mentoring to transform crab shell waste into high-nutrient feed for a poultry farming enterprise. The results show that this model has been highly effective. It has successfully reduced a substantial amount of local waste, lowered livestock operational costs, and established a new, consistent income stream for participating families. This initiative demonstrates a replicable solution for turning environmental liabilities into economic assets, fostering greater community self-sufficiency.

Abstract

The increase in life expectancy in Indonesia has resulted in an increasing number of elderly people facing health, social, and quality of life challenges. On the other hand, environmental issues, particularly organic waste, are also a serious issue impacting society, including vulnerable groups such as the elderly. Given this complexity, interventions are needed that can address both issues in an integrated manner. This article discusses the AKASIA Program empowered elderly garden activity, a CSR initiative of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk - Cimanggis Station Offtake, implemented in collaboration with the Anyelir 2 Farmers Group in Harjamukti Village, Depok. This program uses a community empowerment approach through planning, implementation, and participatory monitoring and evaluation. Activities include urban farming training, organic waste processing, cultivation facilities, and ongoing mentoring. Results demonstrate that the program not only provides productive, social, and recreational space for seniors but also significantly improves their happiness, relaxation, and quality of life. Furthermore, the program contributes to reducing organic waste and opening up economic opportunities through the sale of agricultural products. Thus, the AKASIA Program demonstrates that senior empowerment can go hand in hand with environmental solutions and serves as a model for holistic and sustainable CSR collaboration at the community level.

Abstract

This study examines the performance of PT Bukit Asam’s Social and Environmental Responsibility programs across three pillars—health and nutrition, education, and empowerment and gender—and assesses how far they reinforce one another in support of SDGs 2, 3, 4, and 8. The approach is descriptive–comparative across programs and time (2023–first half of 2025). Analysis relies on annual summaries per program and concise derived measures: service density (beneficiaries per service point), library coverage (schools, students, and teachers engaged), women’s participation (share of female members), and emissions intensity per service point. The strongest synergies arise when programs operate in the same places, calendars are aligned, and common success metrics are used. This pattern appears in the flow from mobile health clinics to supplementary feeding and stunting management (PMT–Stunting); in school-based eye screening delivered alongside the mobile library; in schools serving as hubs to diffuse SIBA (Sentra Industri Bukit Asam) knowledge and products; and in reduced travel and emissions when service routes are combined. Trends from 2023 to the first half of 2025 indicate maintained or rising reach on several components, while shifts in education facility composition and fluctuations in estimated emissions warrant continued monitoring. Practically, the study proposes a shared cross-program metric set—percentage of locations receiving two complementary services, share of participants progressing from screening to the next intervention, time from screening to enrollment, library coverage, women’s participation and per-member productivity in SIBA, and emissions intensity per service point—for decision-making and routine monitoring. This study has limitations related to data availability (2025 covers only the first half), the absence of population size by area for adjusted comparisons, and year-to-year differences in certain indicator definitions. These conditions call for standardizing indicator definitions, completing key variables, and coordinating schedules and sites so cross-pillar benefits become more measurable and cumulative.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of athlete empowerment and environmental conservation through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnership of PT Bukit Pembangkit Innovative (BPI) in Lahat Regency, South Sumatra, using social ecology perspective by Murray Bookchin (1991). The research is grounded in the socio-ecological challenges posed by land-use change and forest degradation, alongside the potential of youth as agents of change. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis of two flagship programs: Pembinaan Federasi Panjat Tebing (FPTI) Kabupaten Lahat (Banjarsari Cipta Prestasi) and Bina Alam Hijau Asri Indah (BAHARI) Banjarsari (environmental conservation). Findings reveal that athlete training not only enhances physical capacity and sports achievements but also fosters ecological awareness through direct involvement in reforestation and greening activities across three villages, resulting in the planting of 400 trees with both ecological and economic value. Cross-sector collaboration—engaging the company, sports federation, village governments, local communities, and the Garis Milang organization—has created an inclusive and participatory socio-ecological network. In conclusion, PT BPI’s CSR partnership serves as an integrative medium that simultaneously advances human capacity building and environmental preservation. This model demonstrates the potential for replication in other regions, as it successfully combines sports excellence, community empowerment, and ecological sustainability within a unified strategic framework.

Abstract

Social innovation is an essential strategy to address various social, economic, and environmental challenges by optimizing local potential in a sustainable manner. This article aims to describe the implementation of social innovation carried out by PT Pupuk Kujang through its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program, which actively involves community participation. The method applied was participatory action research, consisting of needs mapping, planning, implementation, mentoring, and evaluation. Four key programs were analyzed, namely Kuwatan Sadesa, which increased coffee productivity from 1.2 tons/ha toward an optimal potential of 3 tons/ha while conserving forests; Kujang Wanita Tangguh (KUWAT), which empowered women by producing at least two products from garment waste; Asa Warga Ternak Mandiri (Asatama), which developed at least 16 sheep under a communal farming system supported by crowdfunding and the use of pineapple waste as feed; and Kujang Urban Farming (KURFA), which established one greenhouse, engaged ≥10 residents, and generated derivative food products. The results indicate that PT Pupuk Kujang’s social innovation successfully enhanced community welfare, strengthened social solidarity, and promoted environmental sustainability. These achievements highlight the potential of social innovation as a replicable model to be applied in other regions to support sustainable development.

Abstract

The preservation of batik as Indonesia's cultural heritage faces challenges in the era of modernization, where the interest of the younger generation is declining and the economic opportunities for local communities are still limited. In fact, batik has aesthetic and philosophical values, as well as cultural identity that is important to preserve. This study aims to describe the role of Batik Seng, a batik brand from Sengguruh Village, Kepanjen Subdistrict Malang Regency, in integrating tradition, innovation, and community empowerment. The research method used a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with the founders and craftsmen of Batik Seng, as well as observations at the production site. The analysis was conducted using descriptive-qualitative methods with the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that Batik Seng presents innovations in the form of hand-drawn batik, stamped batik, jumputan, and ecoprint using natural dyes and recycled wax waste so that it can be reused. Community empowerment focuses on vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities, the elderly, school dropouts, and productive housewives. Support from PLN Nusantara Power UP Brantas District A (Sutami Hydroelectric Power Plant) through the Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) facility and mentoring strengthens the sustainability of production. In addition, Ms. Evi's role as a local hero is important in knowledge transfer, including to the younger generation. Digital marketing strategies and participation in exhibitions have helped expand market reach. This study confirms that Batik Seng can serve as an inspirational model for the development of a culture-based creative economy through a combination of tradition, innovation, and environmental awareness.

Abstract

In Tablolong Village, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, the Nona Nori program is a community empowerment project that emphasizes the use of indigenous seaweed resources. It was created in response to industrial difficulties in locating eco-friendly materials and fluctuating seaweed prices that frequently hurt farmers. Through partnerships between businesses, academic institutions, local organizations, and the government, the program combines technology innovation with the development of community capacity. Research, training, and mentorship initiatives including institutional management training, turning seaweed into novel food products, and creating environmentally friendly anti-corrosion coatings from seaweed extracts are some of the implementation strategies. The outcomes include a greater range of seaweed-based products, the formation of new business groups, and improved community skills.  The initiative also supports social welfare by increasing the economic independence of coastal communities and environmental conservation by encouraging sustainable resource usage.  All things considered, Nona Nori is an example of a sustainable business-community collaboration that generates profit, value, and a shared world.
