Abstract

Discussion text is one of the texts taught in SeniorHighSchool. Students often find it is difficult to understand the text. Fishbone diagram is diagram showing two side of view which is contrasted each other. Due to its structure which contains of two parts, this diagram can also be used in organizing ideas before writing a discussion text.In order to teach discussion text by using fishbone diagram, the writer uses four steps of teaching. First, teacher gives template of fishbone diagram to the students. Second, teacher asks students to start writing the first draft of discussion text. Third, students compare with friends what they have written. Fourth, the teacher guides students to check their friends’ work. In conclusion, fishbone diagram can help teacher in teaching writing a discussion text to the students.

Abstract

This study is intended to find out whether Community Language Learning can improve significantly students’ speaking ability. Community Language Learning is very important in teaching learning process because they give students an opportunity to practice communicating in different social context in different social rules, Community Language Learning can be set up so that they are very structured or in a less structured way. This study is conducted by using Class Action Research. The subject of this study was the second grade students of SMK Negeri 5 Medan. The sample of the study is the students XI-TPM1 consisting 30 students. These following suggestions are directed for the students of English Department, it is suggested to know or learn kinds of method so they are easier to express their ideas and for the teachers, it would be better using some of the method and asked the students to make a conversation based on the time sequence. The teacher is suggested to make variation technique for students to improve students’ speaking ability and, so the students interested inthe speaking English.

Abstract

This research was conducted at MAN Binjai to improve Teaching English Competence by using the pictures as a media with the first year students of X-A through an Experimental Research Project. Since this research is done based on a qualitative method it means that, it does not need to state the hypothesis in the case of doing research, for it is based on the library or through book review. The writer here is eagerly concemed with the problem of using pictures or visual materials in teaching leaming process to beginners, especially the students of MAN levels. Practically, those four language skills can be taught by using pictures or visual materials, the radio ín particularly applied by Imhoof Maurice, a project director for the Radio Language Arts Project in Kenya and a senior program officer at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington DC, have a great influence in the process of teaching learning interaction, especially for the beginners So that is why, here the English teachers are suggested to use aids in teaching the students, (handling the class by showing various kinds of pictures). It is easier to the students to express what they want to say or tell if they look at the pictures or visual aids on the blackboard. for instance. Through pictures the students can be asked to repeat or mention many kinds of action based on the given pictures, they are asked to repeat sentence patterns given, and then ask them to make sentences by themselves based on the rules given firstly by the teacher. In general sense, teaching the students or the beginners by using pictures or visual materials can give them the meanings of the words of the pictures intrinsically and automatically. In short we can conclude that, teaching English by using pictures or visual materials to beginners have a great influence in the students’ understandings aid grasping the meanings of the words. The beginners will study English seriously and easily through looking at the colorful pictures shown to them.

Abstract

English is an international language, which is spoken in international events and is used as the medium of transferring information flow on science, technology, and culture as well. As a matter of fact, students should be able to perform language skill such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. But for the students, writing is the most difficult subject. That is why the curriculum 2013 of Junior High School emphasizes more on developing students’ writing skill. The objectives of the study are; to know what the students’ difficulties in understanding a narrative text and to know to what extent teaching writing of a narrative text can improve students’ writing skill. The research will give some useful information about a narrative text and teaching writing by using afilm Moana. It will be more interesting for the students to produce a narrative text by listening the dialogue of the film. The techniques of collecting data were by using tests. An interview was also done to know students’ difficulties in producing a narrative text faced by the students. The result of the tests shows that the students’ scores in the writing draft I were 64, 3%. It means that the test was not successful. On the other hand, in the writing of the revision II, the students’ achievement reached 72, 9%. It means that the test was successful.

Abstract

This paper discusses about improving students’ vocabulary mastery using flash cards. The aims of the paper are: (1) to find out whether and to what extent the use of flash cards can improve students' vocabulary and (2) to describe the strengths and the weaknesses of using flash cards to teach vocabulary. The writer conducted a classroom action research from February to June at the second grade of SDN Bulakan 02, Sukoharjo in the academic year 2011/2012. This research was conducted in two cycles and carried out in four steps namely; planning the action, implementation/action, observation, and reflection. The data of the research were collected by using qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The result of the research shows that the use of Flash cardscan improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from the mean score of the test which improve from 56.5 in the pre test to 77.1 in the post test one and 83.7 in the post test two. Using flash cards could make the students pay attention to the lesson properly. It also improved students’ participation in learning vocabulary. They were not shy anymore and highly motivated to join the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This research is aimed to know the effect of clustering technique on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Therefore, the researcher formulate a question as the problem. In order to answer the problems, some theories of experts were used, they are: Brown (2001), Checkett and Checkett (2006), Harmer (2004), Langan (2000), Patel and Jain (2008), Reid (1988), Richard and Renandya (2002). This research is quantitative research. This research was conducted byapplying Quasi-Experimental design. To answer the problem, grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar were used as the population and there were 60 students chosen as the sample of the research. It was chosen that grade VIII-5 students were chosen as the experimental group and VIII-9 as the control group. To analyze the data, the writer used IBMSPSS 20.0. From data analysis, mean of the writing score in experimental group is 77.95, meanwhile mean of the writing score in control group is 67.79. The result of analyzing the data shows the score of t-test is higher than t-table (4.12> 1.67). The hypothesis was accepted.
