Abstract

This paper investigates the roles and status of English as an international language, and the use of English as the ASEAN lingua franca. The roles of English have been changed due to globalization. When English is used as a global language, non-native speakers of English around the world, who have different cultural background and different first language increasingly use and localize English for communicating and expressing their ideas, concepts and cultures.  This leads to the concept of “glocalization”. The term “glocalization”  and its interpretation are addressed and clarified.   Additionally, the paper reflects the challenges in teaching and learning English as lingua franca (ELF) in Thailand, before moving to the implication of “glocalization” in English teaching and learning.

Abstract

This study is intended to find out the effect of using Mind Mapping Strategy on The Students’ Skill in Writing Recount Text. It is an experimental study. There are eleven classes of them. Since the study needs two groups (Experimental and control group), two classes are taken by using random sampling technique. The two classes have 60 students. The experimental group is taught by applying mind mapping strategy and the control group is taught by applying Conventional Method. The instrument for collecting the data is writing recount text about holiday. It is consisted of 100 words. After the data has been scored, the data is analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis shows that t-test is 3.75 while t-table is 2.000.It means that t-test is higher than t-table with the degree of freedom 58, and the level of significance 0.05. The result shows that the hypothesis of this study is accepted. In other words, Mind Mapping Strategy significantly affects the students’ writing skill in recount text.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to 1) find the meaning of metaphors found, 2) analyze the strategies used in translating them into Indonesian version and 3) identify the types of shifts found in the translation of Sandra Brown Novel “Exclusive” with its Indonesian version entitled “Berita Ekslusif”. There are two types of metaphor namely dead metaphor and live metaphor. This study was restricted in analyzing live metaphors based on theory of Larson(1998) that was applied to analyze the meaning of metaphor by identifying the topic, image, point of similarity, and/or non figurative meaning, as well as her other theory of strategies used for translating metaphors. The types of shift were identified and analyzed by following theory of Catford (1974). Data were collected through library research by note taking the live metaphors found in the data source. Many examples of metaphorical expressions were collected from the novel. Then, the collected data were analyzed by the theory concerned. The result of the study showed that it is hard to identify the live metaphor if the topic and/or the point ofsimilarity left implicit. There are four strategies applied by the translator in translating live metaphors in this study, they were translating by keeping the metaphorical image, translating as simile, substituting to the metaphor in the target language which had the same meaning and translating without keeping the metaphorical imagery. The most strategy used in translating live metaphors in this study is the last one without keeping the metaphorical imagery. All types of category shifts occurred in this translation, such as class shift, structure shift, unit shift, and intra system shift.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to elaborate denominal nominalsin Toba Batak language from the view point of generative transformational study. The theory applied in this study is modified theory of Halle‟s model. Therefore, there are six components of sets of generative transformational rules as modified theory in this study, i.e. List of Morphemes, Word Formation Rules, Filter, Orthographic Rules, Phonological Rules, and Dictionary. The data were analysedby applying modified theory with reference to Halle‟s theory as the main theory. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by using observation and interview. The collected data are voice-recordings and writings. The research findings show that denominalnominals in Toba Batak language are done by attaching (1) prefix [par-], (2) prefix [sa-], (3) infix [-ar-], (4) confix [ha-an], (5) confix[par-an], (6) and affix combination [pasi-]. The resultof the affixation processes generate complex words which have new grammatical and lexical meanings. Phoneme addition takes place in morphological process particularly with prefix [sa-]. The inflectional processes of attaching those affixes bring about phonologicalidiosincracy, therefore, such words must be processed in filter to generate acceptable words in Toba Bataklanguage.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to investigate the formation of superlative forms of adjectives by article na + prefix [um-] in Toba Batak. The results show that superlative forms of adjectives by article na + prefix [um-] in Toba Batak result in various morphological and phonological processes as follows: (1) if article na +prefix [um-] is attached to adjectives preceded by vowels [a], [e], [i], [o], and [u] the last phoneme of prefix [um-] is doubled i.e [um-] is pronounced as [umm-] sound. (2) if the initial phoneme is a bilabial plosive voiced consonant [b], prefix [um-] is pronounced as [ub-]sound as its allomorph. (3) if the initial phoneme is a velar plosive voiced consonant [g], prefix [um-] is pronounced as [uŋ-] sound. (4) if the initial phoneme is a palato alveolar affricate voiced consonant [j] prefix [um-] is spelt as [un-] sound but pronounced as [uj-] sound. (5) if the initial phoneme is a bilabial nasal voiced consonant [m] prefix [um-] does not change. (6) if the initial phoneme is an alveolar nasal voiced consonant [n], prefix [um-] is spelt and pronounced as [un-] sound. (7) if the initial phoneme is a bilabial plosive voiceless consonant [p], prefix [um-] is spelt as [um-] sound but pronounced as [up-] sound. (8) if the initial phoneme is an alveolar rolled voiced consonant [r], prefix [um-] is spelt and pronounced as [ur-] sound. (9) if the initial phoneme is an alveolar fricative voiceless consonant [s], prefix [um-] is spelt as [un-] sound but pronounced as [us-] sound. (10) if the initial phoneme is an alveolar plosive voiceless consonant [t], prefix [um-] is spelt as [un-] sound but pronounced as [ut-] sound.
