Abstract

Since the present of Corona virus, all aspects of human live are changed. This also happened in education field. Because of this pandemic, students and teachers have to do online learning. Online learning by utilizing technology demands innovation and creativity in learning activities. One way that can be used to do the learning process online is using Google Classroom digital media. The aim of this study is to evaluate Students’ perceptions on the effectiveness of Google Classroom as a Digital tool in Teaching and Learning. The study was conducted through a descriptive qualitative with Survey Research Design to investigate the Students’ Perceptions. Data analysis was conducted using Descriptive Statistics. The results of the study indicated that Google Classroom is effective in improving Students access and attentiveness towards learning, knowledge and skills gained through Google Classroom. Make Students to be active learners, as a Digital Tool, it provides meaningful feedback to both Students and Teachers.

Abstract

This study deals with the types of politeness strategies on social media: Facebook posts and Twitter, according to Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. To answer questions in the research, the author took 30 Facebook posts and Twitter data according to Creswell's (2009) theory, namely by downloading posts from Facebook and Twitter randomly with the theme of Covid-19. Then the data was condensed, displayed and verified conclusion drawn. The results of this study found that there were 5 types of positive politeness strategies and 6 negative politeness strategies. The positive sub strategies are: making offer, showing a sense of optimism, involving the interlocutor and speaker in a certain activities , giving and asking for reasons, and expector demand reciprocity. while the negative politeness strategies include: indirect expression), using fences, stating FTA as a general social, stating clearly that the speaker has given goodness.

Abstract

This study was concerned with the types of transitivity system elements in CNN Online News. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative study were to discover: (1) the types of transitivity system, (2) the realization of transitivity system, and (3) the reasons for transitivity system realized in CNN Online News. The data of this study were clauses that consist of a transitivity system in 10 Covid-19 Online News taken from CNN Online News. The results of the study showed that: 1) CNN Online News realized all the types of process: Material, Mental, Relational, Behavioral, Verbal, and Existential process. The dominant process was Material Process. It was realized 214 (50,47%). CNN Online News realized participants: Actor, Goal, Sayer, Carrier, Attribute, Verbiage, Senser, Phenomenon, Target, Existing, Existence, Behaver, Token, Value, Receiver, Behavior, and Range. Actor and Goal were dominantly realized in the clauses of CNN Online News, there were 167 (26,38%) of Actor and 141 (22,27%) of Goal. The most dominant was Actor, and CNN Online News realized circumstances: Location, Cause, Manner, Accompaniment, Extent, Matter, Angle, and Role. It was realized 193 (60, 50%). The dominant was Location; 2) There were congruent realization and incongruent realization of transitivity system. The most dominant realization was congruent realization; 3) The reason why the types of transitivity system realized in CNN Online News is based on the context of the situation related to the field. Field stand for three entries, namely arena/social activity [+institutionalized/-institutionalized], participant’s characteristics [person/social] and semantic domain [+specialized/-specialized]. The most dominant was arena/social activity, especially [-institutionalized]. Keywords: Metafunction, Transitivity System, Online News, CNN

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the ways the modality was realized in teacher-to-teacher talk of forced online learning. The data of this study were sentences expressing modality uttered by teachers while they were talking about forced online learning. Participant observation technique was performed to collect the data. Based on the data analysis conducted it was found that modality was realized through modal operators (47%), modal adjuncts (27%), interpersonal metaphors (16%), and predicator constituents (10%). The use of modal operators which was mostly found in realizing the modality indicates that the teachers tend to talk and think about states of affairs that are not present in the current situation and may never occur in the natural world. Moreover, there are some combinations of the realizations realized, namely: modal adjuncts and interpersonal metaphors; modal operators and predicator constituents; modal operators and modal adjuncts; interpersonal metaphors and predicator constituents; modal operators and interpersonal metaphors; modal operators, modal adjuncts, and interpersonal metaphors; and modal operators, interpersonal metaphors, and predicator constituents. It shows that teachers use some ways to assert or deny and to prescribe or proscribe when they express their judgments on forced online learning especially in informal situations.

Abstract

This study investigates Interpersonal Metaphor in R.S. Regin Silvest and Malini Ganapathy’s Anthology of Covid-19 Poems. The objectives of the study are (1) to analyze the kinds of interpersonal metaphor applied in R.S. Regin Silvest and Malini Ganapathy’s Anthology of Covid-19 Poems, (2) to describe how the interpersonal metaphor applied in R.S. Regin Silvest and Malini Ganapathy’s Anthology of Covid-19 Poems, (3) and to explain the reason for the realization of interpersonal metaphor in R.S. Regin Silvest and Malini Ganapathy’s Anthology of Covid-19 Poems. This study conducted qualitative research, and as the result of fifty poems there are thirty five Poems of Covid-19 that indicate as Interpersonal Metaphor. Result revealed that there were sixty-three Interpersonal metaphor found in this study namely, Interpersonal metaphor of Mood were thirty-seven and Interpersonal Metaphor of Modality were twenty-six, Interpersonal Metaphor of Mood applied in the Speech Function, namely, Question in Declarative Mood were 18 (49%),  Command in Declarative Mood were 13 (35%), Statement in Interrogative Mood were 5 (13%), Question in Imperative Mood 1 (3%), And Interpersonal Metaphor of Modality applied in kinds of modality namely, Modalization were 14 (54%) and Modulation were 12 (46%). From thirty five poems of Covid-19 which consist of Interpersonal Metaphor, there were four meanings and messages found, Expressing the fear of Covid-19 were 15 (43%), Expressing advice and lesson about Covid-19 11 were (31%), Delivering the spirit and positive energy during Covid-19 Pandemic were 5 were (14%) and Expressing hope for better days were 4 (12%).

Abstract

This study focused on the investigation of implementing Scientific Approach in teaching online reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan. The research problem was based on the implementation of Scientific Approach as one of teaching strategies in the application of curriculum 2013 in selected school. Scientific Approach consists of several stages which somehow were not applied optimally in teaching and learning activity. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected by observing and interviewing subjects of the study.The subjects were three teachers who used to teach reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan in grade eight in junior high school education level. The objectives of the research were to find out; 1) the implementation of scientific approach in online teaching reading, 2) how the strategies are realized to be implemented in online teaching reading, 3) the reason of the strategies of implementing scientific approach are realized in online teaching reading. Based on the analysis of the data. The findings of the research were: 1) teachers had applied the implementation even though it was not optimal, 2) the strategies used of the approach in order to encourage students during learning process, 3) teachers had reasons to implement scientific approach (observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating) as a teaching strategy. The result of the research would be a reference towards further study and help other teachers in applying teaching strategy of learning process

Abstract

This study deals with Karonese Language Shift of Young Generation. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: the reasons for Karonese shift into Indonesian language. The subjects were 20 young generations of Karonese, 10 young generations of intramarriage family and 10 young generations of intermarriage family. They were chosen from 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and mother and 10 young generations whose parents are Karonese father and Non Karonese mother. The ages range of the subjects were between 13-17 years old. The instruments used for this study were questionnaire and interview. The interview was used to obtain the reasons of language shift. The data were analyzed by Miles, Hubberman and Saldana’s data analysis. There are two reasons of Karonese young generations use Indonesian language, the first is status of Indonesian language, there are (20%) of young generations from intramarriage family answer this reason and the rest of (80%) use Indonesian language because of social success. There are (50 %) of Karonese young generations from intermarriage family use Indonesian language because of the status of the language. The rest (50%) of the young generations use Indonesian language because of social success.

Abstract

This study deals with Directive Illocutionary Act of male and female English Teacher in SMP Ad-Durrah Medan. The objectives of this study is to describe the realization of directive illocutionary act of male and female English teachers at SMP Ad-Durrah Medan. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting data are through applying observation by taking eight meetings for male and female English teachers to get realization of directive illocutionary act by male and female English. The results of this study found that realization of directive illocutionary act realized from the collaborative, competitive, conflictive , and convivial,  where one of the realization was showed that  the teacher makes a group discussion for doing the task and the teachers help the students by making a discussion for each student, making a collaboration for their task related to the content of their lesson and presenting the discussion in the class.

Abstract

Sentence is very meaningful collection of word, where the sentence can state an idea or idea in full. Sentence is a benchmark for child in their language skills. In writting it can be started with capital letter, and end with a full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark. There are several types of Indonesia sentence that will be disscusss namely declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, imperative sentence, and interjective sentences. A child is said to be receptIve based on several criteria and indicators. This research conducted in a qualitative research, the source of the data from trancribe utterances conversation from daily activity. Technique of the data collection is recoreing, transcribing the sentence, verifying and classifying. This study found that ten years old child were more dominant in interogative that is 26 data (34,6%) sentence and very minimal in declarative sentences that is 9 data (12,1%).

Abstract

Translation has always been the focus part of communication. A movie can convey information to the audience through pictures, dialogue and music. The picture is the visualization of the story on the screen, the dialogue is the conversation that occurs in the movie, and the music is the sound effect of the movie, which makes the story effective. The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing translation strategies in Java Heat subtitling. The research deisgn used in the research is qualitative. There were eight types of translation strategies based on Baker’s theory in Java Heat movie namely translation by paraphrase using a related word (23.32%), followed by translation by omission (19.69%), translation by illustration (16.06 %), translation by a more general word (13.95%), translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (13.95%), translation by cultural substitution (8.79%), translation by using a loan word (3.44%), and translation by a more neutral/less expressive word (0.76%)”.
