Abstract

Digital marketing has become a new way to exchange things, starting from information to selling things. UniversitasNegeri Medan (UNIMED) as one of the educational university tries to engage to this digital world. Since the currentfacility of multimedia laboratorybased on Computer Assisted Language learning (CALL), the implementation of e-learning has been developed. Through English for Spesific Purposes (ESP), the students learn further on e-world. The aim of this research is to find out the students’ ability in writing an advertisement using social media.  This research used a development research approach (R & D) that adopts a model developed by Borg & Gall and the questionnares were analyzed by Linkert Scale formula. The research activities wasin the second semester consist of 30 english literature students carried out pre- and post-test, expert validation, and final product. The result shown: 1) social media like Instagram can be developed as the writing material; 2) students’ ability in writing using social media can be implemented in e-marketing to design an advertisement. Furthermore, it’s suggested to do more research on digital marketing to offer a wider opportunies to students in deciding the best job in the future.

Abstract

This study focused on indirect speech act used by the main characters in Toba Dream movie. The objectives of the study were to: (1) find out the types of indirect speech acts used in Toba Dream movie, and (2) describe how types of indirect speech acts used in Toba Dream movie. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were all utterances uttered by the main character in Toba Dream movie and collected by watching the movie.  The result of the study showed that there were four types of indirect speech acts found in Toba Dream movie, they were: representative, directive, commisive, expressive containing indirect speech acts in Toba dream Movie. Representative (25,71%) were realized by interrogative sentences and imperative sentences. Directive (21,43%) were realized by declarative sentences and interrogative sentences. Commisive (14,28%) were realized by declarative sentences. The main characters in Toba dream movie dominated the use of indirect speech act to express statement, command and warning. It showed that they could produce the language more politely and keep the hearer’s face while getting instruction or information indirectly.Keywords: indirect speech act, movie pragmatic, Toba Dream

Abstract

The study aims to investigate the adversities and challenges on students’ listening and speaking learning. Thirty college students were involved in this study by distributing a questionnaire consisting of ten questions relating to their adversity and challenges in listening and speaking learning. Findings from this study indicate that the students confront some adversities. Being afraid to make mistakes and lacking vocabulary when speaking and listening are the most suggested to be the adversities. Building self-confidence is the best strategy to develop listening and speaking skills.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to discover how the role-play technique is implemented in the teaching learning English at grade 11th of SMKN 6 Medan. The methodology of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher took one class in 11th grade for Marketing major. The researcher used observational tally sheet and video recording as the instruments for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Porter-Ladousse’ Role-Play Technique and Diane Freeman’ Review of Technique. The teacher implemented the role-play technique well; it can be seen from all stages procedure conducted by the teacher during teaching learning process. He did almost all stages that asked role-play technique by Porter Ladouse’s theory and teaching technique review by Diane Freeman’s theory. The researcher found that the teacher implemented to role-play technique by the proper technique following Porter Ladousse theory and Diane Freeman theory. Even though this time is currently a pandemic period and there are restrictions on face-to-face learning, the teacher can still apply role-playing techniques well, even though some things are lacking, such as follow-ups fill-in-the-blanks exercises and map drawing at grade XI of SMKN 6 Medan.Keywords: Role-Play, Teaching Technique, Review Technique

Abstract

This study focused on teacher act in classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model. The aims of this study are (a) to find out the types of act in classroom interaction that the teacher used based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model, (b) to describe how the types of acts are realized in classroom interaction that the teacher used based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model. This research used qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in two ways by observing, and recording. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard model. The results of this research were the following: (a) there were 16 types of acts in teacher utterances, namely:  Marker, Starter, Clue, Reply, Accept, Elicitation, Evaluate, Informative, Directive, React, Check, Conclusion, Comment, Cue, Bid, and Nomination. Meanwhile Prompt, Acknowledge, Metastatement, Loop, Silent stress, and Aside were not found during the teaching and learning process. (b) The realization of types of act Marker of act was realized by a closed class of item “Ok’’. Starter of act was realized by a command. Clue of act was realized by a statement. Reply act was realized by question. Accept of act was realized by a close of item “good’. Elicitation of act was realized by question. Evaluate of act was realized by statement and question tag. Informative of act was realized by a statement. Directive of act was realized by a command. React of act was realized by a non linguistic. Check of act was realized by statement. Conclusion of act was realized by a statement “so”. Comment of act was realized by a statement. Nomination of act was realized by a closed class consisting of the names of the pupil “please you”. Cue of act was realized by a close class of which “raise your hand”. Abstract

The aim of this study is to define the different types of grammatical cohesion and to look into the grammatical cohesiveness of students‟ recount text writings based on the use of grammatical cohesive devices. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method that only focuses on on describing data of grammatical cohesive devices that will be found in students‟ recount writings. The data sources are taken from 20 recount texts made by X IS students of SMA Gajah Mada. The data were analyzed used Mayring‟s theory which is consists of data categorization, abstraction, coding the text and result. In this research, the data collected through documentation and worksheet. The finding of this study showed that the grammatical cohesive devices found in the data except ellipsis. Furthermore, it can be concluded that all texts collected are cohesive enough because they all employ grammatical cohesion even though some of the cohesive ties are used incorrectly.Keywords: Cohesion, Recount Text, and Descriptive Qualitative

Abstract

This study deals with the types of politeness strategies on social media: Facebook posts and Twitter, according to Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. To answer questions in the research, the author took 30 Facebook posts and Twitter data according to Creswell's (2009) theory, namely by downloading posts from Facebook and Twitter randomly with the theme of Covid-19. Then the data was condensed, displayed and verified conclusion drawn. The results of this study found that there were 5 types of positive politeness strategies and 6 negative politeness strategies. The positive sub strategies are: making offer, showing a sense of optimism, involving the interlocutor and speaker in a certain activities , giving and asking for reasons, and expector demand reciprocity. while the negative politeness strategies include: indirect expression), using fences, stating FTA as a general social, stating clearly that the speaker has given goodness.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how teachers at SMP Negeri 37 Medan feel about using the E-learning platform by using Google Classroom Apps. The study was carried out with the use of descriptive qualitative analysis. It was conducted at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The information was acquired through a Google form questionnaire and interviews. According to the findings of the study, the first and second teachers believe that Google Classroom teachers cannot fully assist teachers in the teachinglearning process in the virtual classroom. Teachers favor on-line instruction. Teaching online with Google Classroom necessitates additional effort, such as internet access and time extensions. It is also believed that teachers have difficulty disciplining students during the teaching learning process. The findings of the study show that two teachers’ perceptions of teachers on the use E- learning platform by using Google Classroom Apps during the learning process in Covid 19 are positive, and that using Google Classroom has forced teachers to be more creative in their teaching learning process.Keywords: perception, teachers’ perception, e-learning, Google Classroom

Abstract

Sentence analysis in scientific articles is a literature study that can improve students' ability to think critically. Especially in articles that use English. Syntax analysis is the first step in reading writing before the reader can understand the meaning implied in an English sentence as a whole. This research is literature review research that aims to analyse sentence structure and determine the types of sentences, clauses, and phrases. By selecting the title of the article from the accredited journal Sinta, a search is carried out on each sentence and then classifying sentences and word combinations according to the character and type of sentences, clauses, and phrases.
